This Day in History: August 14 - Russian Alaska
This Day in History: Russians first settle Alaska [August 14]
This Year in History: 150th Anniversary of Russian sale of Alaska to America
Video Notes & Source Links:
Our This Day in History topic, for August 14th, was chosen to be Russian Alaska.
The founding of the first permanent settlement, in Russia's Alaskan territory, took place on August 14th, 1784 [in Three Saints Bay, Alaska].
The video can also be classified as a This Year in History segment, since the sale of the territory of Alaska, to the United States, took place on March 30th, 1867—making 2017, the 150th Anniversary.
There are more links than the minute-length justifies, as the segment was originally meant to be longer; however, I’m including my notes and what sources I had gathered, in case anyone is interested in reading about the topic.
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins in Alaska
(5 Mar 2018) Mushers and their dogs are hitting the snowy trail as Alaska's famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins following a rough year for organizers.
Musher Cody Strathe of Fairbanks and his 16-dog team were the first to take off on Sunday across frozen Willow Lake, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Anchorage.
Sixty-seven teams are signed up for the long-distance trek over mountain ranges, frozen rivers and other dangerous terrain. The winner is expected to reach the finish in the old Gold Rush town of Nome in about nine days.
The race is taking place after organizers spent much of the year dealing with multiple problems, including a champion's dog doping scandal, the loss of a major sponsor and escalating pressure from animal rights activists.

Alaska's famed Iditarod sled dog race to begin amid turmoil
(2 Mar 2018) The 46th running of Alaska's famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicks off Saturday amid the most turbulent year ever.
Among the problems: a doping scandal, the loss of a major sponsor and escalating pressure from animal rights activists after the deaths of five dogs last year, alone.
Organizers have since changed the rules for doping after its first positive test last year in the storied race's history.
Well, it's been one of our more challenging years, said Iditarod CEO Stan Hooley. We think we've figured out the best path forward in terms of changing a rule relative to our drug testing program that will make things much easier to manage going forward.
Participants and organizers believe it will be the only doping scandal to sully the race.
I'm one who believes we'll go another 43 years before the next doping scandal and this will be remembered as the year that the anomaly happened, said four-time Iditarod winner Jeff King.
The Iditarod's board disclosed in October that four dogs belonging to four-time winner Dallas Seavey tested positive for a banned substance.
The organization said it couldn't prove Seavey administered the drugs to his dogs and didn't punish him. But the rules on doping have now been changed to hold mushers liable for any positive drug test unless they can show something beyond their control happened.
Seavey has denied the allegations.
And the Iditarod has been clear that they have not charged him or accused him of violating any rules. They have not imposed any sanctions, said his attorney Clinton Campion.
Meanwhile, animal rights activists are putting pressure on race officials to end the event for good, claiming it amounts to animal cruelty.
Race officials dispute the contention and blame activists for using manipulative information to pressure corporate sponsors like Wells Fargo, a longtime backer, to sever ties to the Iditarod.
We really think that now is the time to put pressure on these companies and you know, educate people themselves about the cruelty that goes on behind the scenes at the Iditarod, said Tricia Lebkuecher of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Regardless, race officials are confident the event will go on for many years to come.
There's always going to be an Iditarod, Hooley said. I consider this more of a growing process than anything else.

Will Smith stuns shoppers as he dresses as a Boots sales assistant to promote son Jaden's water
Will Smith stuns shoppers as he dresses as a Boots sales assistant to promote son Jaden's water:
Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos:
Shoppers at Westfield London were lost for words when they saw Will Smith working in Boots. The Hollywood A-lister surprised Londoners when he got a job as a sales assistant in branch of the pharmacy chain on Sunday. Fans needn't worry though as Will was simply dabbling in a retail career temporarily to help promote his son Jaden's water company. Will originally turned up at the White City shopping centre dressed in his own clothes, before popping into the staff room to change into a Boots uniform, complete with a personalised name tag. He found a spot by the fridges as he urged customers to buy a bottle of Just Water along with their sandwiches. Several shoppers posed for a selfie with the actor on their social media, with one fan writing: Wow the legend @willsmith @westfieldlondon #asyoudo #happysunday #willsmith #justwater #justuk #hollywoodsuperstars #westfieldshopping #london. A Boots employee shared some photos on Twitter , writing: Working a Sunday has its perks. The big man Will Smith coming to Westfield today was amazing! His son Jaden , 20, launched eco-friendly Just Water in 2015, which features bottles made of 82 per cent renewable sources. After becoming a huge success in the United States, Just Water is now launching in the UK and has teamed up with a bottling partner in Ballymena, Northern Ireland to source the water. On Monday, Will shared a photo of himself in an iconic red phonebox on his Instagram page, writing: A few years ago My Son, Jaden started a company, setting out to make bottled water a little safer for our world. I'm proud to say, this week we’re expanding outside America with @JUSTUK! We're on shelves at @BootsUK + @WholeFoodsUK Right This Second!! Go get u a bottle and send me a pic! tag it #justuk. Speaking about his son's business, Will said: While Jaden was surfing as a young kid, some plastic water bottles floated by him and he soon realised that they were dirtying our oceans and killing the environment. He was immediately motivated to do something to save our planet; our future - and with that wish, Just Water was born. Just Water will be sold across the UK in Boots and Whole Foods as part of a new partnership. Jaden said in a statement: By partnering with a retailer like Boots, it’s exciting that so many people across the UK can feel like they are giving back to the environment by drinking JUST. Boots shares the same values as JUST through its social responsibility and dedication to sustainability and I’m excited to work with them for the UK launch. A Trip to Historic Fort Egbert
In 1899, lured by the Klondike Gold Rush, miners and settlers flocked to Alaska hoping to strike it rich. In response to reports of lawlessness, the U.S. Army decided to establish Ft. Egbert on the banks of the Yukon River a few miles from Canada. Now a historic site operated by the Bureau of Land Management and Eagle historical society, it's still a worthy destination today.

In a land far, far away, love flourishes in a kingdom quite unlike any other. In mushroom-shaped homes and old dormitories, a community of dwarfs—all less than 51 inches tall—can be found singing, dancing, and performing on a daily basis for visiting tourists.
In this episode of The VICE Guide to Travel, we send VICE magazine's creative director, Annette Lamothe-Ramos, to visit the controversial theme park, Kingdom of the Little People.

Changing the battery on a cheap pocket watch
Cheap Chinese pocket watches cost a few dollars on eBay or AliExpress. To replace the battery, use a nail file to pry the back off near the stem (winder). And a toothpick to pop out the battery. eBay is a good place to buy replacement batteries. I found a seller nearby offering fast shipment of a 10 pack of number 377A batteries for $1.99 including shipping.

In the far north-west of the American continent stretches a land some one and a half million square kilometres in size. Only six hundred thousand people inhabit this region where the frozen tundra, the coniferous forests and the mountains dominate a landscape which, in some places, has never been trodden by man.
The start of the melt announces the resurgence of life in Alaska. With the vegetation, food returns, and the largest of Alaska's land carnivores, the grizzly bear, awakes from its winter sleep. The grizzly bear belongs to the same species as the European bear, but its better diet enables it to grow much bigger. A Pyrenean bear weighs around 300 kilos and stands two metres tall, while on Kodiak island some bears can weigh almost 1,000 kilos and measure 3 metres. The grizzlies are solitary animals, and at the start of spring hunger makes them even more dangerous. In times of hunger the adult bears are capable of killing and eating young of their own species.
All of them are waiting for the salmon to arrive, their only hope in this cold, hostile land. Each year thousands of salmon return to the rivers where they were born, providing the local wildlife with the food they need to build up the reserves necessary to survive the long, harsh winter. They are manna from the sea, the reserves of protein and fat everyone is waiting for. The salmon, quite simply, are life.
The salmon have finally reached the land they originally came from, but their odyssey has just begun. Now, they have to face seagulls, eagles, otters, and above all the great predator of Alaska, the largest land carnivore in the world the grizzly bear.
The indefatigable salmon again set off on their journey home. But their bodies must undergo major transformations, sexual glands have been developed and prevent them from eating. They will have to conquer the rapids, leap up waterfalls and escape from their predators without eating a single thing.
at this time of summer, fishing has become almost a game, and they don't even eat the majority of those they catch. Along the riverbanks float hundreds of dying salmon, and the bodies of those who were unable to survive this demanding test.
The salmon also benefit from this natural selection. The fact this test is so demanding means only the fittest will make it to the end. Moreover, the number of salmon that come to these coasts every year is such that, if they all reached their final destination, the rivers would be saturated. The last to arrive destroy eggs previously laid by others, and prepare their own nests right there. The population needs to be controlled, and that is precisely the role the predators perform.
Finally, after many hardships, the salmon make it to their respective spawning grounds. After choosing a suitable place, the salmon prepare their nests.

B-25 Mitchell
The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American twin-engine, medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation (NAA).
The design was named in honor of Major General William Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. Used by many Allied air forces, the B-25 served in every theater of World War II and after the war ended many remained in service, operating across four decades. Produced in numerous variants, nearly 10,000 Mitchells rolled from NAA factories. These included a few limited models, such as the United States Marine Corps' PBJ-1 patrol bomber and the United States Army Air Forces' F-10 reconnaissance aircraft and AT-24 trainers.

'Boats' The Robert R. Johnson Story
Robert R. Johnson sailed on a square-rigged sailing ship as a 15-year-old. He craved the sea and adventure. He found both in a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. During that time, he served in three Antarctic expeditions: the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-41), Operation Highjump (1946-47) and Operation Windmill(1947-48). As of 2012, he is the only living person to have served in all three of those expeditions.
Mr. Johnson's service spanned the eras when Antarctic exploration transitioned from small private expeditions using wood-hulled ships to large, modern government
expeditions using military support.
