MOVED TO TEARS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM (LONELY PLANET BEST IN TRAVEL 2018) | Eileen Aldis
Antwerp, Belgium has been named one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for Best In Travel 2018. After visiting this historic Belgian city, Marc and I aren't surprised at all. When we decided to go there, we didn't know what to expect and were taken by surprise. We thought Antwerp had a lot to offer and wished we had more time there. The people were friendly, the buildings beautiful, and the food delicious. We started our day exploring at the oldest house in Antwerp -
now a protected monument - when we realized it was right around the corner from our Airbnb. It was built around 1480 and has survived six wars and more than five hundred years. Next we dipped into a vintage store called Riot because I have a weakness for thrift shopping and was on the hunt for a warm winter coat. After that we walked to Grote Markt (the main square) where you find the town hall and a statue of local hero, Brabo. The story goes that long ago there was a giant named Antigoon who stopped all boatmen on the Scheldt River to demand a toll. Anyone who resisted had their hand cut off and thrown in the river. A young man named Brabo killed Antigoon and cut off his hand and threw it in the river. This is how Antwerp got its name. In Dutch it's called Antwerpen from 'hand werpen' which means hand throw. We strolled along to Het Steen which is a castle and also the oldest building in Antwerp. It's located right on the Scheldt River and we found a plaque commemorating Canadian soldiers who had fought to protect Antwerp and its harbour during World War II. Standing there thinking about the connection between Canada and Belgium and all the lives lost I was really moved. Antwerp is well known for its diamond industry. It has a large diamond district (known as the Diamond Quarter) where most of the world's diamonds pass through annually: billions and billions of bling. We ended the day with - what else? - Belgian fries. NOT French fries. The local specialty is stoofvlees which is a beef stew on top of fries with mayonnaise. It was delicious and I intend to eat as many fries as possible in Belgium! Hope you enjoy this tour around Antwerp!

Evening walk over the Meir in Antwerp, Belgium 3D / 360
This video shows you an evening walk over the Meir in Antwerp, Belgium, recorded in 3D / 360 degrees. In this holiday season it's extra fun with all these decoration lights. This is the largest shopping street in Antwerp and you can find all kinds of different shops in this street. From jewelry, lingerie & clothing, you are able to find and buy almost everything in this street. Cycling is allowed here, but pedestrians are first here. The buildings were beautiful already, but sometimes even nicer in the twilight. Recorded this around 05:00 PM and see how busy it is in this street. Really the place to be if you like to shop. Enjoy your visit to Antwerp as much as I like to do!

Visit Antwerp - Amberes - Brabo fountain
In the middle of the 'Grote Markt' stands the Brabo fountain. The statue was made by sculptor Jef Lambeaux in 1887. According to a legend, a terrible giant, called Druoon Antigoon, lived on the banks of the river Scheldt in ancient times. Whenever sailors on the Scheldt river refused to pay toll to the giant, he punished them by cutting off their hand. A Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, managed to kill the giant. Brabo cut off the hand of the giant and threw the hand away in the river.
Hence, according to the legend, the name of the city : hand ( Engl.: hand) -werpen (Engl.: to throw). A nice legend, but untrue. Nevertheless, the 'hand' is the symbol of Antwerp. There are hands in the town flag. Also there are several sweets in the form of a hand (cookies, chocolates).

Grote Markt van Antwerp
Grote Markt originally was a forum or square just outside the medieval residential quarter. In 1220 Duke Henry I of Brabant (1165-1235) donated this community land to the city.
The name Merckt was used for the first time in 1310.
Around this time the first annual markets or foren van Brabant (Brabant fairs) were organised. Here English merchants would do business with Italians, Spaniards and merchants from the Northern German Hanseatic cities as well as from Southern Germany and Flemings of course. At the end of the fifteenth century Antwerp overtook Bruges as the most prominent city of the Low Countries. The centerpiece of the square is a large fountain, built in 1887 by the architect Jef Lambaux. It depicts the protagonist of Antwerp's most famous legend: the mythical hero Brabo.
According to the Legend, the giant Antigoon demanded a high toll for each ship that wanted to enter the city. If the ship's crew did not want to pay the toll, their hands were cut off. The hero Brabo fought the giant, cut its hand and head and threw the hand in the river.
The fountain's statue depicts Brabo throwing the giant's hand in the river Scheldt and symbolizes the free passage through the river. As such it is a political swipe at the Dutch, who long blocked (and still continue to hinder) free traffic on the Scheldt. The Grote Markt is probably best known for the beautiful houses of the Guilds which align the square. Those buildings are relatively new. The original houses were destroyed in the fire of 1576. They were rebuilt in Flemish Renaissance style, but were revamped again in the nineteenth century, resulting in the current lavishly decorated houses. Note the beautiful statues on top of the Guild buildings.
City Hall
But the most impressive building on the Grote Markt is undoubtedly the magnificent Stadhuis (City Hall), built in 1565 in Flemish Renaissance style. It is lavishly decorated with ornaments and boasts a sumptuous interior that was redecorated in the nineteenth century. As with every great Flemish city, Antwerp’s medieval heart is a classic Grote Markt (Market Sq). Here the triangular, pedestrianised space features the voluptuous, baroque Brabo Fountain depicting Antwerp’s giant-killing, hand-throwing legend. Flanked on two sides by very photogenic guildhalls, the square is dominated by an impressive Italo-Flemish Renaissance-style stadhuis, completed in 1565.
Take a seat in a cafe along the Grote Markt and enjoy a rich hot chocolate or a cool Belgian beer as you watch the comings and goings of Antwerp’s historical center. The city’s main square is surrounded by 16th-century architecture, with the impressive Brabo Fountain at its heart. Locals come to enjoy the many cafes, shops and restaurants that line the square.
The City Hall dominates the western side of the Grote Markt. It was built in 1565 and remains a fine example of Renaissance architecture, with elements of both Flemish and Italian style. Note the red brick arches of the ground floor, which were once filled with dozens of small shops. Above this, two rows of Ionic columns give the building a more Roman feel.
In the center of the square is the towering green statue of Brabo, Antwerp’s most famous mythical figure. It is said that Brabo slayed the giant who charged excessive tolls to those wanting to enter the city by water. The statue depicts him throwing the giant’s hand into the river Scheldte.
Surrounding the square are the attractive Guild Houses, which date back to the early 16th century. The original houses were destroyed by fire. The buildings you see today are the result of a 19th-century renovation, which explains the lavish decorations on the facades. Look for the golden statues on the roofs of several of the houses.
Stop for a tasting in a boutique chocolate shop or enjoy a lunch of mussels washed down with an artisan beer. As the sun goes down and the buildings are lit up, the square takes on a romantic feel, perfect for a stroll or an intimate meal.
Those visiting in December can browse for presents or souvenirs at the annual Christmas markets. Winter also sees the installation of an ice rink in the square. Rent a pair of skates and glide beneath the many shuttered windows of some of the town’s oldest buildings. The square is open all year. It’s within walking distance of many of Antwerp’s major attractions. There’s no fee to enter.

WILLOW CHANG DANCE IMPROVISATION: ANTWERP: Pt. 2 THE HAND
Today's dance in ANTWERP, Belgium..
Willow Chang- Improv Modern Dance
Video: Goce Dimevski
July 24th, 2016: Here's an dance improvisation performed on a hand sculpture, representing the legend of Antwerp's name, around 6:30 PM on a Sunday Summer afternoon, after visiting the Reuben's House Museum.
According to folklore, notably celebrated by a statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend about a giant called Antigoon who lived near the Scheldt river. He exacted a toll from passing boatmen, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river.[8] Eventually the giant was killed by a young hero named Silvius Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutch hand werpen, akin to Old English hand and wearpan (to throw), which has evolved to today's warp -(Wikipedia)
Continuing my dance in real places, i enjoy movement, off the cuff, and on the move.
this is what feels real to me, as a chance to return to the realm of the free spirit... we do what we do with no guarantee there's an audience/ simply because someone, or many, are there, is not reason to watch.
being somewhere, and being 'present', are not always the same. we have no idea what everyone's story is: are they tired, running late, meeting someone, uninterested, disturbed by dance?
perhaps the absence of a stage, lights or program makes some doubt it is a performance. is it performance? maybe some have never seen dance in an airport? or maybe some weren't aware it's dance?
there are so many possibilities.... if you can simply be, and do, without relying on the need of an audience. that could be regarded as some kind or transcendence. for some, they'd call it 'madness'. what is the difference? that's up to you.

Marco Z in Antwerpen
I was walking on the Meir past Saturday and after a while I noticed that all street artists were playing that same song of Marco Z, I'm A Bird.
I followed the arrows in front of them and came up at the local Free Record Shop where Marco Z himself !! joined the flashmob. In front of the store they were all jammin' together.
Was really cool. Now I have a signed copy of Marco Z's new album.
