Growing Legion Lake Fire Forces Evacuations in South Dakota
A growing wildfire prompted officials to order evacuations in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota Monday.
The so-called Legion Lake Fire had grown to roughly 4 square miles by Monday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of five homes in the park, the state Wildland Fire Division told the Associated Press. No buildings have burned and no injuries have been reported.
Officials say the blaze began around 7:30 a.m. near the U.S. Highway 16A and northbound S.D. Highway 87 intersection and may have been sparked by a power line that was knocked over by a falling tree, the Rapid City Journal reports.

Family Vacation - Custer, SD
We, the family, gathered our things together, loaded up the pop-up trailer and headed to South Dakota. After a day from hell where we had 2 flat tires, a dead battery, and engine issues we didn't think we could afford to continue. But my folks gave us some extra funds to continue and enjoy our vacation. Thanks to mom and dad; I hiked 3 trails, saw both Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments, and of course lots and lots of wild life.
We camped at the Legion Lake Campgrounds in Custer State Park - 8 miles from Mt Rushmore, 10 miles from Crazy Horse, 8 miles from Custer, and just a couple miles from the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road.
We were there just after the big Sturgis rally, where it rained almost non-stop. But the weather we had was beautiful and sunny. A number of bikers were still around and saw many on the road, even had a couple in our campground. Pick, who was just 2 sites up from us, was out of the Chicago area.
The trails we hiked were fun and the views you get from the hill tops were breathtaking. We hiked 3 nearby trails, and each of them made me want more. We got the surprise of a lifetime when we arrived at the Peter Norbeck Center to hike the Lover's Leap trail.
The best way to see the local wildlife is to ride the Wildlife Loop Road. but most people don't jump off the main road onto the small gravel roads. We drove many of these gravel roads and found overviews that you can't see from the main roads. And, when we came across a buffalo heard, prairie dog village, or deer we could really slow down, take our time, even get out of the car without thinking about blocking the road and pissing off other drivers.
This was a great trip and I can't wait to do it again.
