Lynette Wallworth & Tashka Yawanawa | The Art of Co Creation | SkollWF 2018
Lynette Wallworth & Tashka Yawanawa in conversation with Tabitha Jackson at The Art of Co-Creation: A Storytelling Model for Impact and Engagement
Tashka Yawanawá is chief of the Yawanawá people in Acre, Brazil. As chief, he leads 900 people stewarding 400,000 acres of Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The son of the former leader of the Yawanawá, Tashka grew up witnessing the virtual enslavement of his people by the rubber industry and experiencing the near annihilation of the tribe’s culture by missionaries. Since the 1980s, Tashka has actively fought for the rights of indigenous peoples. Realizing that he needed further education to improve the situation of the Yawanawá, he pursued higher education in the U.S. and abroad.
He was directly involved in the creation of the Indigenous Lawyers Association and co-founded the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Youth Alliance, through which he shares the experiences and knowledge of the Yawanawá with youth around the world, and works with projects that guarantee the preservation of different indigenous cultures.. In 2001, Tashka returned to Brazil, and chose to use the knowledge gained from his experiences abroad to help his people transform their future.
He became the youngest Chief in the history of the Yawanawá at age twenty-five. In a short amount of time, Tashka and Laura have managed to double the extent of Yawanawá territory, reinvigorate Yawanawá culture, and establish economically and socially empowering relationships with the outside world. Tashka and Laura have two daughters—Kenemani and Luna Rosa—and divide their time living and working in the Yawanawá community and Rio Branco, Brazil.

June 13, 2017 City Council Meeting
Niagara Falls City Council Meeting for June 13, 2017. View the meeting agenda:
Elisa Silva, “Territorial inequality and the urban Cassandras of our times
As slums emerged in the XX century due to rapid rural-urban migration, modern design discourse had developed an important chapter on multifamily housing that folded neatly into the shelter demands brought on by migration. Decades later, social housing continues to enjoy a prominent seat in design discourse and public policy despite the observable fact that self-built homes have been far more effective in housing important segments of the urban population in cities of the developing world, and have created a considerable proportion of the built environment. The stark territorial inequality this urban reality manifests seemingly remains outside the scope of social housing, and reveals a passive or even evasive response to this “urban Cassandra” of our time.
Inquiries into approaches to territorial inequality pursued by Enlace Arquitectura over the past 11 years include public space making, community engagement projects, public policy and research in urban and rural contexts. Please join this evolving conversation.
Elisa Silva is director and founder of Enlace Arquitectura established in Caracas Venezuela 2007. Projects focus on raising awareness of spatial inequality and the urban environment through public space, the integration of informal settlements and community engagement in rural landscapes. Public space interventions in informal settlements through participatory methodologies are also central to Enlace´s practice, and were recently featured in the XX Architecture and Urbanism Biennial in Valparaiso Chile 2017. Other awards include the XXII Ibero-American Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism for the Sabana Grande Pavement Project in Caracas Venezuela 2012; and the Walk 21 Award for Puerto Encantado Higuerote Venezuela 2015.
Elisa is co-author of Pro-Inclusion: Practical tools for the integral development of Latin American cities (CAF Latin American Development Bank, 2016) and CABA Cartography of the Caracas Barrios 1966-2014 (Fundación Espacio 2015). In 2017, she was awarded a Graham Foundation Grant for the publication Pure Space: Expanding the Public Sphere through Public Space Transformations in Latin American Informal Settlements, (Actar, 2019). In 2011, she received the Wheelwright Fellowship and the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome in 2005. She teaches at the Simon Bolívar University in Caracas Venezuela and is a consultant to UN Habitat and CAF. She grew up between St. Louis and Venezuela, and is a graduate of the GSD 2002.

Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency, Panel 2
Women in Design (WiD) and Latin GSD, in collaboration with the Department of Landscape Architecture, present “Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency.” This symposium will provide an opportunity to debate the current and future state of landscape architecture in Latin America.
Latin America is formed by a diverse set of territories, offering both challenges and opportunities to the landscape discipline. This symposium brings together professionals from several countries to discuss the complex social, political, and environmental realities engaged in their work. From the creation of ecological corridors in Bogota to urbanization in the Galapagos Islands, these designers interpret landscape through a range of lenses that include urbanism, architecture, ecology, and social engagement.
Speaking to the many interdisciplinary interests at the GSD, panelists will frame conversations around theory and practice, established firms and emerging voices, and the role of equity in design. What is the intersection of research and built work? How is the discipline taught and regulated? How does landscape translate to academia and public policy? By presenting the current state of landscape architecture in Latin America this symposium will provide a space for imagining its future possibilities.

2017 AM: Executive Session: Beyond the African Burial Ground:
Cont. Anthropological and trans-disciplinary innovations in theory, methods, and technologies
The New York African Burial Ground Project that studied an 18th century African cemetery in downtown Manhattan always recognized its positioning within complex currents of a critical social history of scholarship and anthropological practice. Established in 1992, the Project synthesized mutual values of memorialization and research in a program empowered by New York’s “descendant community” seeking to disable white supremacy in anthropological constructions of African American memory. The result was an unparalleled, ethnically integrated, interdisciplinary research team led by African Americans. Together, descendant communities and the Project team realized ancestral reclamation and reburial, erection of a US National Monument and a Visitor Center, which continue to tell the stories of “enslaved Africans” in New York.
This Session considers the ongoing theoretical, methodological, and interpretive implications of ethical public engagement in anthropology, first prominently represented by the Project. Publicly engaged research designs and language, including “descendant communities,” continue to resonate in American archaeology, and beyond. We discuss scholarship and continued engagement on the once unique question, “what are the African cultural origins of African Americans and why do they matter?” How are emerging technologies and methods employed to answer these questions? What processes are shared by archaeological projects in the African Diaspora and by anthropologists engaging descendant communities? How do publicly engaged and activist anthropologies articulate with contemporary social movements? What does the African Burial Ground have to do with it? Beyond a retrospective, we focus on processes and products reflecting the current moment in the politics of the past, and theoretical and methodological implications for the future of anthropology.

Dhanyakuriya Rajbari||Complete tour || Heritage Tour|| Short tour from Kolkata||Bengali Vlog ||
The place is called Dhanyakuria and the the castle styled building is the Gayen Garden House or Gayen Bagan Bari.
But the Gayen Garden House is not the only place of attraction in Dhanhyakuria, which is best described as a village of palaces.
Welcome to the non descript village of Dhanyakuria, located near Barasat in 24 Parganas (North), West Bengal. It is home to several palatial mansions belonging to landlords and merchants of yesteryear.
The palaces were built as outhouses in this village, so that the family members could spent time out of Kolkata, in utmost luxury.
The Gayen Garden House dates back little over a century and was constructed by Mahendranath Gayen and covered an area of 30 acres. The building has remarkable resembles with the Tagore Castle in Kolkata. Unlike the heavily encroached Tagore Castle the Gayen Garden House has maintained its true elegance and grace.
The road zig zag past the semi urban landscape and leads to the Gayen Bari (the house of the Gayens).
Built by Gopichand Gayne in the middle of the 19th century, it still serves as a residence of the Gaynes.
The light pink coloured two storied building is L shaped and has a series of ionic columns. A three storied domed pavilion stands at one corner. Known as the nazar minar (watch tower) it probably never served as a watch tower but was used for recreational spot.
The Gayens were in joint business with the Sahoos, Ballavs and the Mondals and they traded in jute, jaggery and many other commodities. Each of these built magnificent mansions in Dhanyakuria.
From the Gayen Bari, retrace your steps towards the main road, after a few steps take a left turn leading to the Sahoo Bari.
An amazing structure with Victorian windows and intricate stucco work, sadly during my visit it was under lock and key and we had no option but to admire its exterior only.
The road meanders to the Ballav Bari also known as Doll House (Putul Bari), the name originates from the statues placed above the pediment of the house.
Sadly a fresh coat of paints have ruined the grace and elegance of not only the statues but of the whole building.
A short walk past the Nazar Minar leads to the magnificent Ras Mancha of the Ballav’s. Shaped like a nava ratna temple, the ras mancha has five arched entrance on each of the four sides.
