South Mall (Allentown, PA) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the South Mall in Allentown, PA from October 23, 2018. This is a rather bland local mall that didn't have very much to offer besides a halfway decent antique store. It seems the management company is content to just let it languish in obscurity while tenants slowly trickle from this struggling mall.

Here is some brief information from Wikipedia:
The South Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the United States.
The mall is located on Lehigh Street, just south of Interstate 78 exit 57, near Allentown's southern border with Salisbury Township and Emmaus.
Originally the location of Hess's South, a satellite location of the Hess's downtown Allentown store, the center was expanded in 1975 into an enclosed shopping center although the anchor stores opened a year earlier. The mall underwent renovation in 1992. Its current anchor store is Stein Mart.
After the move of Gold's Gym up Lehigh Street from the mall, in August 2011 Ross Dress for Less signed a lease for 27,000 square feet of vacant space at that end. The store opened on October 6, 2012. In June 2014, PREIT sold the mall to Nicholas Park Mall LLC for $23.6 million. They had plans to renovate the mall, which never came to fruition.

Westgate Mall (Bethlehem, PA): Living on Borrowed Time - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Westgate Mall in Bethlehem, PA from October 23, 2018. This is a unique crossbreed between an enclosed strip center and a traditional mall. The center has seen far better days, and looks to be on the verge of being completely demalled, as it was just sold in October 2018 to New Jersey developer Onyx Equities LLC, who in their words said it looks forward to “implementing Onyx’s signature, value-add strategy”. Going from their portfolio of other properties, this seems to be a strategy of de-malling enclosed properties and turning them into either traditional strip centers or lifestyle centers.

Here is the beginning of a thorough article from the ever helpful Skycity2 blog. I implore you to visit the link at the end to continue reading this fine writeup with many fine pictures:
Westgate Mall is one of those malls easy to miss. From the outside it does not even look like a mall. From aerials, it is easy to mistake it for a large strip center. This probably explains why in the many discussions about dying malls that this one is overlooked. Originally opening in 1973, the mall exists as a forgotten yet surviving early shopping center in Bethlehem. Since eclipsed by larger malls, the mall has largely become a community mall serving an ever decreasing customer base.
Developed by Harold S. Campbell, Westgate Mall is a combined enclosed strip and enclosed mall meaning that few like it exist anywhere. The anchors to the original center included Hess's on the west end of the main mall, Newberry's on the east end and George's IGA Foodliner on the strip portion. The mall also contains an upper level portion of offices on the strip portion over the top of the current Rite-Aid. Another second level office portion was located next to Newberry's, but that portion is walled off and currently unused. In all, it was a strangely designed center.
An interesting note about the Hess's is that it is identical in design to a store built at South Mall closer to Allentown. However, the enclosure of the mall was not handled in a typical fashion. Since the mall included both a strip and enclosed portion, ultimately the strip portion was enclosed, too! However, unlike most efforts to enclose a strip, it simply became an enclosed hallway with the original tenants on one side and the parking lot on the other with glass windows separating it. Only a portion of the enclosed strip actually has tenants on both sides. In addition, Hess's anchored the mall in a strange fashion with the store staggered like a discount store with the store set back away from the front of the mall. While it still does have a mall entrance, it includes a tiring set of steps and an odd diagonal door to the right going directly outside. In addition, Bon-Ton today takes up space of an inline tenant on the opposite side of the single door.
Today Westgate Mall is significantly vacant. Most of the active tenants are located in the front of the mall with parking lot access while the back of the enclosed mall is mostly empty. Bon-Ton went out of business in August 2018, and is now vacant. The mall has also not had any renovation in at least 30 years making it one of the most vintage malls still in operation in the state, but that was supposed to change when it was announced in 2015 that the mall would receive a $5 million dollar overhaul. That turned out to be simply the addition of Sky Zone Trampoline Park and a removal of the old staircase in the main mall corridor. How the mall hangs on is anybody's guess considering that the vast majority of shoppers drive a little further up the road to go to Lehigh Valley Mall.

Whitehall Mall: Hallway Mini-Mall #3 - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of Whitehall Mall in Allentown, PA from December 27, 2018. This is a tiny mini-mall that is yet another step back in time. It used to be much bigger, but has been significantly de-malled, as the concourse used to extend all the way down the strip center portion to the Sears. Now, only a single wing is left serving the Gold's Gym (formerly the PLAZA theater) and Kohl's.
If you look closely during the outside portion, you can see a Woolworth's labelscar on the side of the building at the 3:55 mark.

Wikipedia has extremely limited information about this mall, but here is what we have:
The Whitehall Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in the United States.
The mall is located north of Allentown, on MacArthur Road at its intersection with Grape Street. It is located directly across Grape Street from the Lehigh Valley Mall. The Whitehall Mall was developed by Kravco and previously managed by Simon Property Group and jointly owned by Simon (38%), and PREIT (62%). Washington Prime Group and PREIT later jointly owned the mall, with PREIT selling its share on December 2, 2014.
When the Whitehall Mall opened in 1966, it was the first enclosed shopping center north of Philadelphia, and its popularity led to the rise of a sprawling retail district along MacArthur Road that continued to expand into the early 1990s. In 1998, the Whitehall Mall underwent extensive renovations.
The mall is anchored by Bed Bath & Beyond, buybuy BABY, Gold's Gym, Kohl's, Michaels, Raymour & Flanigan, and Sears, of which only Gold's Gym and Kohl's has interior access.

Clarion Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of Clarion Mall in Clarion, PA from August 3, 2019. This is a locally run hallway mall that has never seen a renovation. One of the anchors has been swapped out several times, today being an AMC theater. The second anchor, Kmart, left last year and sits empty today. The mall is very interesting architecturally with the pitched roofs, clerestory lights, dark orange brick floors, and abundance of wood grain and planters. It felt very nice walking around this mall.

With the lack of a Wiki page, here is an article from 2017 by the SkyCity2 blog (edited slightly for updated information):
Located just off of I-80, the mall holds its own as a simple T-shaped mall constructed in 1980 anchored today by JCPenney. The mall once featured a third anchor known as Dank's (Dank & Co.). Dank's closed with the whole Lewistown-based chain in 1995 and was replaced with Carmike Cinemas (including an expansion for the screens). In addition, the mall features a Peebles on the outlot. Peebles was originally a second location of the local Brody's department store, which itself closed in 1987.
The mall features a rather unique design element in that the mall corridor is designed with a sloped ceiling along the main corridor with skylights only on the east side. However, the court areas feature high window skylights in front of both JCPenney and the former Kmart. Planters are still found throughout the mall as well, but fountains were all completely shut off including one in front of JCPenney that was permanently covered. In all, the mall has an older design than the date of construction suggests, but Clarion itself is a borough with just over 5,000 residents in a county just under 40,000 residents suggesting that it may not be able to support a larger mall.
What sustains the mall is Clarion University of Pennsylvania, a Tier 2 state university that serves as a draw to an otherwise remote region. The student body itself brings in 5,000 residents each year who likely shop at the mall to avoid the much longer drive to Pittsburgh, Indiana (PA) or Youngstown (OH) to shop. The mall also appears to be locally owned and managed in lieu of many other malls in the region that are primarily owned by Zamias Realty. Nonetheless, it is a tiny mall featuring no more than about 200,000-250,000 square feet. Very few malls of this size remain operational today.
While the mall does have some vacancies, it cannot be considered a dead mall. Regardless, it is in an awkward position as Kmart and JCPenney both are risky anchors. However, quite a few options exist for anchors in the mall if either leave. The ideal scenario would be is if Kmart leaves, JCPenney relocates into the larger Kmart space and Peebles relocates into the former JCPenney space. Unfortunately, the greatest likelihood is if any anchors are lost, the mall will likely just be turned into a strip center connected to Peebles. Neither of these scenarios ever played out, Kmart left in 2018 and sits empty today. The mall today is sort of dying, although the locals may keep it alive indefinitely. Nonetheless, whatever happens to the mall, it was a very nice find to discover a tiny small-town mall still operating today. This is especially true in an era where malls large and small are being ripped up by an economic tornado strengthened by a jet stream fed by internet sales, anchor consolidation, a weak rural economy and massive store closures.
