In this video, I venture off to the five story pagoda in #Hangzhou that was built for the first of thirteen wives after she bore him a son. This temple was rebuilt in the 2000s which was years after the original was destroyed.

I can't believe what we found in Hangzhou China. This city is incredible. I had no idea about the West Lake, Lingyin Temple, & The Enduring Memory Of Hangzhou Production on the lake. We are so lucky we had friends who live here and who showed us around.
The Four Seasons West Lake is a dream. We loved every moment there. We felt welcomed and anticipated from the moment we arrived. The room and all the details the staff thought of to make our stay special were greatly appreciated and I can't wait for our next visit.

Black Girl in China | Vlog #7: Hangzhou | Lingyin Temple & Leifeng Pagoda
I took a trip to Hangzhou for Tomb-Sweeping Weekend. The highlights of my day were the Lingyin Temple and Leifeng Pagoda.
Lingyin Temple is a Buddhist temple where the temple's name is commonly literally translated as Temple of the Soul's Retreat. It is one of the largest and wealthiest Buddhist temples in China, and contains numerous pagodas and Buddhist grottoes. There were many pathways through hills of the temple, where hundreds of Buddhist statues were carved into the rock. My favorite had to be the big happy Buddha that was placed at the entrance of the cave. I also took a moment off camera to pray with my incense in hand for my family and loved ones. There was an aura to the temple that made me feel welcome and at peace.
We took the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and rode our bikes from the temple to Leifeng Pagoda, passing various ponds and lakes from the Xixi National Wetland Park. Finally, we climbed 300 plus stairs to get to the top of the Pagoda with West Lake and the sunset as its backdrop.

Hangzhou's Leifeng Pagoda (Hangzhou's West Lake)
Leifeng Pagoda / 雷峰塔 is a five stories tall tower with eight sides, located on Sunset Hill south of the West Lake in Hangzhou, China. Originally constructed in the year AD 975, it collapsed in 1924 but was rebuilt in 2002. Since then it has been a popular tourist attraction.
The original pagoda was built in 975 AD, during Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, at the order of King Qian Chu (born Qian Hongchu) of Wuyue. It was built to celebrate the birth of Qian Chu's son, born to Queen Yu. The Leifeng Pagoda was an octagonal, five-story structure built of brick and wood and with a base built out of bricks.
During the Ming dynasty, Japanese pirates attacked Hangzhou. Suspecting the pagoda contained weapons, they burned its wooden elements, leaving only the brick skeleton, as can be seen from Ming paintings of the West Lake.
Leifeng Pagoda was one of the ten sights of the West Lake because of the Legend of the White Snake.
Later, due to a superstition that the bricks from the tower could repel illness or prevent miscarriage, many people stole bricks from the tower to grind into powder. On the afternoon of September 25, 1924, the pagoda finally collapsed due to disrepair.
As for whether there was a mausoleum below, this was debated for years until finally radar was used to investigate. On March 11, 2001, the mausoleum was excavated and many artifacts were found, most notably a gold and silver coated hair of the Buddha.
In October 1999, the provincial and municipal governments decided to rebuild Leifeng Pagoda on top of the ruins of the old one. The new pagoda opened on 25 October 2002. It is composed of a 1400 tonne steel structure with 200 tonnes of copper parts. It contains four sightseeing elevators, and modern amenities such as air conditioners, televisions, and speakers. At the entrance of the pagoda, there are two autonomous escalators to carry visitors to the base of the pagoda.
The original base of the pagoda is kept in good condition as well as the artifacts discovered in an underground chamber.

This is my first day of real travel in China. I decided to go to Hangzhou because the taxi driver on my way to the train station said Hangzhou is a beautiful place. In Chinese there is a saying that compares Hangzhou and Suzhou to heaven (上有天堂, 下有蘇杭).
