Boating on the River Shannon - Carnadoe Lakes
If you go boating on the River Shannon you must visit the Carnadoe Lakes. The Carnadoe lakes are a tributary of the River Shannon and they're often an overlooked beauty spot. The old limestone Carnadoe Quay is matched only by the old Stone Bridge. This bridge has a reasonably low air draft but air draft gauges on either side of the bridge will help. Do stock up on milk and supplies before heading to Carnadoe because there are no shops here. This is a wonderland that remains as unspoiled as it ever did. There is so much more to show in the Carnadoe Lakes that it will probably be another video in the future. We didn't get to explore Kilglass mooring, the mountain river or indeed the Rockville Navigation. Oh, roll on the new boating season.

Ireland River Cruise • Cruise the River Shannon aboard Shannon Princess
Cruise the River Shannon & its Lakes aboard the 10 passenger Shannon Princess. When it comes to river cruises, Ireland remains one of the most fascinating undiscovered locations in the world. Offering a mixture of folklore, quaint customs, friendly locals and the sort of sprawling green landscapes which earn the island its nickname of ‘Emerald Country’, Ireland river cruises are sure to satisfy even the most demanding of river cruise enthusiasts!
Through our classic Shannon river cruises, Ireland’s very soul is placed within your reach. The 10 passenger Shannon Princess is a spacious powerful river cruise vessel specifically adapted for the Shannon River. She provides the classic Ireland river cruise throughout the season for our guests.
The River Shannon is perhaps the ultimate location to enjoy the best river cruises. Ireland’s rolling green fields, ancient Celtic monasteries and an abundance of wildlife are common place on the carefully chosen route. An Ireland river cruise will put you in touch with legends and fables as well as the warm and hospitable Irish people. Their extraordinary history has been varied and sometimes difficult but they somehow always find the time to chat and discuss the time of day.
Rolling green fields, lakes and rivers, ancient Celtic monasteries and an abundance of wildlife, such as rare white-tailed sea eagles. The legends and fables of Ireland are found everywhere and are well understood by the warm and hospitable Irish people. Their extraordinary history has been varied and sometimes difficult but they somehow always find the time to chat and pass the time of day. Our River Shannon cruise brings you in touch with the very soul of Ireland.
Shannon Princess is the largest hotel barge cruising the River Shannon. Her thoughtfully designed interior includes five twin/double bedded suites with Loughside views, a comfortable saloon, dining area and a fulllength upper sun deck with spa pool.
Her experienced Captain and crew go out of their way to ensure your every need is accommodated. Your Master Chef was trained at the renowned Ballmaloe School and distinguishes herself with the creation of some wonderful signature dishes.
If there is one commodity that Ireland is not short of, it is water. And if there is one characteristic that the Irish are famed for, it is the ability to provide a good time. The waterways are the traditional arteries of Ireland's culture and commerce, and there is certainly no better way of experiencing Ireland's friendly people and fascinating heritage than by drifting along some of the 240 miles of the River Shannon.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.
