STORYLINE:
School notebooks with a portrait of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin on the cover have been causing a controversy in Russia since they went on sale this week.
While human rights activists and historians have warned that the notebooks wrongly instil a positive image of Stalin in children's minds, eager customers have been snapping them up in Moscow bookstores.
One such customer argued on Wednesday that Stalin's wrongdoings shouldn't undermine his significance.
Many people died because of him, he said. He caused a lot of harm to our people, but this doesn't diminish his significance as a figure. One shouldn't forget in what condition he inherited the country and in what condition he left it.
In response to numerous pleas to take action, Russian Education Minister Andrei Fursenko said he disapproves of the notebooks - but has no legal way to stop their publication or sale.
The deputy commercial director of the Moscow House of Books said on Wednesday that reaching conclusions about Stalin's legacy is a personal matter.
We say that such a person existed, (we explain) what was going on during his reign in our country, what was bad and what was good, said Olga Utesheva, standing near a pile of the notebooks.
Providing an assessment is absolutely not our role, she added. It is probably a personal objective for each person.
