A huge People's Republic of Donetsk flag was sewn and raised over a building in Donetsk's Lenin Square on Sunday. Hundreds of supporters of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk took part, waving flags and holding balloons in the colours of the DPR. Prime Minister of DPR, Aleksandr Zakharchenko, attended the event.
The massive red, black and blue flag is 30 metres long and 25 metres wide. The black stripe allegedly represents the area's fertile land and rich coal reserve, while the blue stands for the spirit of the people and the waters of the Azov Sea, while the red represents the blood spilt for freedom of the people.
The DPR flag was approved by DPR authorities on June 21. On Saturday Zakharchenko announced the DPR may begin to issue passports over the next week, and is planning to adopt Moscow time.

Ukraine: Pro-Russia demo rocks Donetsk, as people rally for Gubarev
At least 1,500 pro-Russian demonstrators turned out in Lenin Square in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk Saturday afternoon to demand a referendum on the future of the region.
Protesters wielded signs denouncing governmental change in Kiev as a coup imposed by far-right forces. Protesters also warned NATO and the United States against intervention in Ukrainian affairs.
Hundreds also chanted for the freedom of Pavel Gubarev, the leader of the People's Militia of Donbass, arrested by the Ukrainian Secret Service (SBU) on March 6.

Ukraine: Kharkiv residents defend Lenin monument on Fatherland Day
Crowds of Kharkiv residents, members of the communist and socialist parties, as well as veterans of World War II and the Afghan wars came to secure the monument of Lenin on Liberty Square in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Sunday. They built a metal fence around the monument, which Maidan protesters reportedly planned to pull down on Sunday.
Many war veterans came to the square as February 23rd is the Defender of the Fatherland Day, celebrated in the former Soviet republic.
The Defender of the Fatherland Day marks the date of the first draft to the Soviet Red Army in 1918.

More than a thousand protesters gathered in Donetsk on Saturday and called on Russia to protect them from the Ukrainian military.
Denis Pushilin, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Donetsk People's Republic, addressed protesters in the city's Lenin Square.
He said they were extremely grateful to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his support despite facing pressure from the international community.
The balance of power in the Donetsk region has teetered wildly this week.
After Ukrainians elected Petro Poroshenko as the country's president, and Russia said it would respect the vote, hopes rose for a resolution to the conflict between the central government and the insurgents who want Donetsk to be part of Russia.
But a day later, the rebels launched an exceptionally bold assault, seizing Donetsk's airport.
Ukraine's military responded with previously unseen ferocity, launching airstrikes and sending in paratroopers to retake the airport.

Commander of Vostok battalion near Donetsk says his troops are protecting Ukraine by fighting govern
A commander of the pro-Russian Vostok battalion near the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk claimed his troops were protecting Ukraine by fighting the government forces.
Referring to the latest fighting around the city and near Donetsk airport, the commander - who goes by his nom de guerre, Scorpion - said the Ukrainian army had no resources left to fight with.
According to the commander, pro-Russian rebels were trying to push the Ukrainian army away from the Donetsk region so they could no longer attack civilians.
The Ukrainian army is worn out. There is no one to fight. There are no weapons, Scorpion said. I think that among people who fought against us there are both enemies, but also soldiers I don't consider my foes.
Pro-Russian rebels were firing towards Ukrainian positions near Donetsk on Wednesday.
Several 82-millimetre mortars were directed towards the Ukrainian army in response to earlier Ukrainian fire, one of the pro-Russian mortar crew said.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, but the statement was ambiguous and there was no immediate indication that the fighting would stop.
The brief statement on Wednesday said mutual understanding was reached regarding the steps that will contribute to the establishment of peace, but gave no details.

Groups of pro-Russian activists and supporters of Ukrainian unity voiced their disagreement with each other during simultaneous rallies in central Donetsk's Lenin Square on Thursday, as firecrackers and smoke bombs were thrown between the two sides of about 1,000 people each. Several people were detained.
Pro-Russian supporters held Russian flags and chanted Russia!, while supporters of Ukraine's unity waved Ukrainian flags and chanted Glory to Ukraine!, and Glory to heroes. Police in riot gear kept the two groups separated.

Opinion divided in Ukraine's city of Donetsk about whether to follow Crimea's example
Two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Crimea into the Russian fold in Moscow, opinion remained divided in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk about whether they should be next.
Some Ukrainians are worried that Crimea could set a precedent for pro-Russian groups to play out a similar scenario in Ukraine's east, and Donestk is chief amongst the likely candidates should such a schism occur.
The pro-European Ukrainian Zayarniy family were active participants in the fight against fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych's regime that took place on Kiev's Independence Square.
The family are now anxious about Russian influence in the region, and what it could mean for their future.
Artyom, 27, a lawyer, said he felt like a minority everywhere he went.
I have fallen out with people from my circles, as we don't share the same opinions, he said, with clear bruising on his face and a bandage on his head.
He said he was caught in the middle of last Thursday's unrest, where pro-Russia demonstrators clashed with supporters of the new Kiev government and was attacked by armed men.
Lenin's square, the symbol of Russia's influence in the city of Donetsk, was the battleground for last week's protests.
Flowers have been laid at the scene where a pro-Ukrainian demonstrator was killed.
Although only a small crowd of pro-Russian demonstrators gather daily in Lenin's square, thousands took to the streets when Crimeans voted on Sunday.
Many, like the Larionov family, feel nostalgic for the Soviet Union.
I was born in the Soviet Union, and since it fell apart, I still have a feeling that some sort of organ is missing. It feels like living in a half-way place, always missing something, so I want, as a minimum, the Donetsk region to re-join the Russian Federation, Artyom Larionov said.
Meanwhile his wife, Yuliya said people were 'genuinely happy' when Russian troops entered Crimea.
The 29-year-old psychologist said that Russia, Ukraine and Belarus were all one nation, and shouldn't have borders.

Several dozen captured Kiev soldiers were paraded through the streets of Donetsk, Sunday, in a direct reference to a Moscow procession of Nazi prisoners of war in July 1944.
The paraded soldiers, captured in the course of Kiev’s offensive on the Donbass region, were taken to the central Lenin Square. Trucks could be seen cleaning the streets after the soldiers were marched away.
The procession was an echo of Russia’s WWII parade of Nazi POWs, where street cleaners also trailed the prisoners, symbolically cleansing Moscow of Nazi fascism. Several participants in the march could also be seen holding rifles from WWII, drawing further parallels.
Many pieces of captured or destroyed government military hardware were also laid out in Lenin Square, a dig at Kiev’s Independence Day celebrations.
Earlier Sunday hundreds of marching troops and military hardware paraded the streets leading to Maidan Square in Kiev in celebration of the 23rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. This was the first military parade since the previous president, Viktor Yanukovych, abolished the practice in 2009.
