Commander of Vostok battalion near Donetsk says his troops are protecting Ukraine by fighting govern

A commander of the pro-Russian Vostok battalion near the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk claimed his troops were protecting Ukraine by fighting the government forces.
Referring to the latest fighting around the city and near Donetsk airport, the commander - who goes by his nom de guerre, Scorpion - said the Ukrainian army had no resources left to fight with.
According to the commander, pro-Russian rebels were trying to push the Ukrainian army away from the Donetsk region so they could no longer attack civilians.
The Ukrainian army is worn out. There is no one to fight. There are no weapons, Scorpion said. I think that among people who fought against us there are both enemies, but also soldiers I don't consider my foes.
Pro-Russian rebels were firing towards Ukrainian positions near Donetsk on Wednesday.
Several 82-millimetre mortars were directed towards the Ukrainian army in response to earlier Ukrainian fire, one of the pro-Russian mortar crew said.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, but the statement was ambiguous and there was no immediate indication that the fighting would stop.
The brief statement on Wednesday said mutual understanding was reached regarding the steps that will contribute to the establishment of peace, but gave no details.

Pro-federalisation self defence units continue to hold the city council building in Slavyansk, Monday, despite an ultimatum issued by Kiev demanding activists lay down their arms and leave occupied buildings. The local units are on high alert following the threats from Kiev's authorities, defending activists who have vowed not to leave the buildings they currently hold, including the local police headquarters.

DONETSK PROTESTERS URGE PROTECTION FOR CHILDREN - 1 June - Hundreds of people have held a rally in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk, calling for the protection of children from the Ukrainian army.
Protesters gathered in the city's Lenin Square on Sunday to mark the international day for protection of children.
Holding placards reading Save the children of Donbas, No the Ukrainian army, the demonstrators demanded the Kiev government stop its military operation in eastern and southern regions of the country.
Organizers said the rally is against fascism and the killing of our children. They also accused Kiev authorities of ordering their forces to target civilians for the sake of pressuring the self-defense forces in the eastern regions to give up fighting.
Sunday's protest came a day after thousands of pro-Russia protesters gathered in Donetsk, asking Moscow to protect them from the Ukraine military.
The military operation in southeastern Ukraine was ordered by Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov in mid-April in a bid to root out pro-Moscow protests there.
According to unofficial reports, some 200 people, mostly women and children, from the city of Slavyansk in Donetsk region took refuge in Crimea on Friday, May 30.
On May 12, Donetsk and Lugansk declared independence following local referendums in which the regions' residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Kiev.
The referendums followed a similar vote in Crimea in March that led to the reunification of the peninsula with the Russian Federation. Nearly 97 percent of participants in Crimea's referendum voted for rejoining Russia.

In Donetsk itself, 2,000 people gathered in the city's central Lenin Square on Saturday, waving Russian flags and chanting Russia! Russia! in support of the self-proclaimed republic, which has sought help from Moscow. I have no other objective but to make Donbass a part of Russia, said Alexander Boroday, the self-styled prime minister of the republic, referring to a wider eastern Ukrainian region containing heavy industry, coal mining and steel works.
Further away from the city center, rebels built up two new barricades overnight: by the sprawling residence of multi-billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, the country's richest man, and by the headquarters of the heavily armed, pro-Russian Battalion Vostok militia.
At a cemetery in the adjacent town of Makeevka, 10 rebels fired into the air to honor their comrade, Vasily Burov, 46, killed on Thursday in a firefight with the Ukrainian army.

Ukraine: Activists try to interrupt Communist Party march

Ukrainian police have detained four activists of the Coalition of the Orange Revolution on May Day in Kiev, Ukraine. Activists attempted to damage banners wielded by Communist Party supporters, who were marching towards Independence Square. Police led the activists away, some were being carried by force, and were then placed in police vans.

According to the police, the leader of the Coalition of the Orange Revolution, Sergey Melnichenko, is among the detainees.

Thousands turned up for the Ukrainian Communist Party march, which wove through the streets of Kiev. The march concluded with a rally in Kiev's Independence Square, which was awash with red from thousands of Communist Party flags. Demonstrators on International Workers' Day wore communist inspired clothing and brought out their memorabilia from various communist countries.

The self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) removed the barricades that were erected around the Donetsk administration building, Friday.

The Vostok Battalion, one of the most capable and professional units serving the DPR, said that it was forced into the decision because the barricades allowed localised criminal activity. The building had become a refuge for looters who also robbed civilians in the guise of DPR supporters.

Sergei, a local resident said, however, that the state is getting ready of the garbage that is not necessary and that the new state should be in order.

Views from the eastern pro-Russian city of Donetsk and the western pro-European city of Lviv on the

When seen from above there is no doubt the city of Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine is a mining city.
Its roots are in the industry, so much so that the city of about a million people is build around a mine.
The people here know what is happening in Kiev, the capital city that can seem so far away.
They've seen pictures of anti-government protesters shot dead in Kiev's streets, and the TV reports on the mansions of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, the onetime thug and pro-Russian politician who grew up in this far-eastern city.
They watched from afar this week as protesters, most from Western Ukraine, helped form the country's new interim government.
And for many they don't like it at all.
On the fringe of this sentiment are the radical left-wing Ukrainians, who gather in the city's central square daily to make speeches and some say to protect the Lenin statue - which stands in the middle of the square - from fascists.
One of them is Andrey Balashov Makeevka, a local business owner.
He said this week that because Ukraine is already separated, the only thing left to do is to to accept that the country cannot be united any more.
In the west, the city of Lviv has emerged as a centre for Ukrainian artists and writers, a huge draw for European tourists and a city desperate for closer ties to the West.
To the fiercest pessimists, as well as to extremists on both sides, the two cities are already in different nations.
In fact, on Lviv's streets, pro-EU flags now fly and anti-Yanukovych graffiti and signs can be found.
One popular sign referring to Yanukovych reads,The bastard sold your country.
One Lviv resident expressed his hope Ukraine can eventually be part of the European Union.
We hope to join Europe and have a visa-free regime, I hope we will begin to live better, he said.
Oleg Khandogyi also pointed out the underlying differences between Ukrainians living in the East and in the West part of the country.
They (Ukrainians living in the East) have been brainwashed, they only see work. They live in their mines and see nothing more, that is why it is difficult to find common ground with them. The Western part is more open, it is more European, it is more intelligent and Ukrainian-oriented.
On the outskirts of Donetsk this hard scrabble life Khandogyi refers to in derisive terms is apparent.
Large heaps of mine waste, called terra cones, dwarf the houses of the workers who live nearby.
On the street outside the mine is a well preserved communist-era monument.
Yurii, who lives in Donetsk, and didn't give his last name, commented on the recent changes in the country.
Politicians failed to make agreements and turned people against each other. Now we face the situation where people from the Western part of Ukraine are angry with the people from the Eastern part of Ukraine and vice versa. I don't know what will come next, but I don't want to have a war, he said.
Only a handful of regional leaders will talk about the recent situation in Ukraine.
Among them is Alexander Kravtsov, a top city official and member of Yanukovych's political party.
He said he thinks most people in the region still believe in a united Ukraine, but warned that the number who identify themselves with Russia will grow significantly if they feel threatened.
If we continue to see violence and illegal actions from our TV screens, then naturally, being a Russian speaking region, a Russian-oriented region, the number of supporters (of Russia) will significantly grow, said Kravtsov.
Back in Lviv, among the cobblestone streets and medieval Catholic churches, local resident Natalia Mytsko feels strongly about her country not being led by Russia anymore.
