RUSSIA: MOSCOW: BRITAIN HONOURS SOVIET MARSHAL FOR WWII HEROISM
English/Nat
Britain has posthumously conferred one of its highest honours, a knighthood, on a former Soviet Marshal who won a crucial victory against Nazi Germany in World War 2.
Britain's Defence Secretary George Robertson conferred the honour to Ivan Konev's widow at a ceremony in Moscow on Tuesday.
Konev was the commander at the Battle of Kursk in 1943 where 100-thousand German soldiers were killed.
Konev, who died in 1973, had been unable to receive the award because of the Cold War.
The British embassy in Moscow played host to a ceremony that was a reminder of relations past and a spur to relations future between Russian and Britain.
It was the posthumous awarding of the Knight Commander of the Order of Bath to Marshal Igor Konev - a Russian commander during World War II.
Although Konev died in 1973 his widow, Antonina and daughter Natalia received the medal in his honour, watched by the present-day head of the military, General Igor Sergeyev.
Only two other Soviet commanders, Marshals Zhukov and Rokossovsky have received similar awards.
Konev was awarded his medal in 1945 but in the immediate aftermath of war, it proved impossible to present it to him in person.
So the British government decided that in the centennial year of his birth it would be fitting to mark the anniversary by presenting the K-C-B to his widow.
Defence Minister George Robertson, said the ceremony was a significant occasion for both countries.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
British-Russian relations, I think, especially with this ceremony have been relaunched with a new vigour, a new determination, and great sincerity and General Sergeyev have struck up an accord between us which I think will be as strong as any be it Prime Minister Blair and President Yeltsin.
SUPER CAPTION:George Robertson, British Defence Minister
The ceremony brought Roberston's visit to Moscow to a close.
Earlier in the day the two countries signed a joint military accord, enabling closer ties between the two naval fleets.

Chernobyl - Inside The Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant
This is a quick 8 minutes inside the Chernobyl Power plant (officially, the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant). Reactor 3 and 4 shared the same building, and this shows you inside the reactor. This new wall holds back nuclear radiation and holds up the current Safe Confinement building. Also showing the monument honoring the first victim and the first hero of the accident.
The nuclear power plant consisted of four RBMK-1000 reactors, each capable of producing 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electric power (3,200 MW of thermal power), and the four together produced about 10% of Ukraine's electricity at the time of the disaster. Construction of the plant and the nearby city of Pripyat to house workers and their families began in 1970, with reactor No. 1 commissioned in 1977. It was the third Soviet RBMK nuclear power plant, after the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant and the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, and the first plant on Ukrainian soil.
The completion of the first reactor in 1977 was followed by reactor No. 2 in 1978, No. 3 in 1981, and No. 4 in 1983. Two more blocks, numbered five and six, of more or less the same reactor design, were planned at a site roughly a kilometre from the contiguous buildings of the four older blocks. Reactor No. 5 was around 70% complete at the time of block 4's explosion and was scheduled to come online approximately six months later, on November 7, 1986. In the aftermath of the disaster, the construction on No. 5 and No. 6 were suspended, and eventually cancelled in April 1989, just days before the third anniversary of the 1986 explosion. Six other reactors were planned on the other side of the river. All 12 reactors would be planned to be running in 2010.
Reactors No. 3 and 4 were second generation units, whereas No. 1 and 2 were first-generation units, like those in operation at the Kursk power plant. Second-generation RBMK designs were fitted with a more secure containment structure visible in photos of the facility.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: DEFENDER DAY CELEBRATIONS
Natural Sound
Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall on Wednesday as part of the celebrations to mark the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland.
Born in the early days of the Soviet era, the ceremony commemorates the contributions of the Army and the Navy to that political climate.
The ceremonies have survived the political changes in Russia and are marked every year on February the 23rd.
Wednesday's honorary ceremony was also attended by members of the Russian government and the Federal Assembly (parliament), top military commanders, and veterans of the Armed Forces.
This year celebrations come at a time when the Russian armed forces are engaged in fighting with separatist rebels in Chechnya.
Tens of thousands of people have lost their lives since the beginning of hostilities in August last year; including 1500 Russian soldiers according to official figures.

Hazing Russian soldiers - Fowm Moscow to Murmansk
In Russia, the duty of service still exists and the hazing of newcomers is a national drama that claims many victims every year. In Murmansk, Jelle Brandt Corstius visits the Soldiers Mothers Committee where concerned mothers are trying to save their sons. Jelle drinks with war veterans to the fallen comrades, and speaks to a mother whose son committed suicide after cruel hazing practices during his service.
Original title: Soldiers as sacrificial offering
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. [Tajikistan] Victory Monument + IS Tank | Памятник Победы | 승전기념비 + 스탈린 탱크 @ Dushanbe | 두샨베
The IS Tank was a series of heavy tanks developed as a successor to the KV-series by the Soviet Union during World War II. The heavy tank was designed with thick armor to counter German 88 mm guns and carried a main gun capable of defeating Tiger and Panther tanks. It was mainly a breakthrough tank, firing a heavy high-explosive shell that was useful against entrenchments and bunkers. The IS-2 went into service in April 1944 and was used as a spearhead by the Red Army in the final stage of the Battle of Berlin. The IS acronym is the anglicized initialism of Joseph Stalin (Ио́сиф Ста́лин, Iosif Stalin).

Red Orchestra 2 is a hardcore, realistic WW2 shooter that emphasizes careful strategy and squad tactics. It has features such as a suppression mechanic and realistic gunplay. One of my favorite games.
RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR WHITE ARMY vs. RED ARMY 1919 ANTON DENIKIN 48784
This Soviet propaganda film recounts the crucial events of 1919 with the White Army battling the Red Army for control of Russia.
Narrator: In the summer of 1919, the Soviet Republic was threatened by a new military power. General Denikin formed an army of 200,000 people out of officers, Cossacks, and groups of local nationalists in the south. In July 1919, in Tsaritsyn, general Denikin issued a directive ordering the forces to take over Moscow. (01.00) An offensive was launched. In October 1919, Denikin occupied Oryol, his troops were threatening Moscow. That was one of the most critical moments of the Socialist Revolution according to Lenin’s opinion. (01.46) ‘There should be no indifferent people among us! Everyone should fight Denikin!’, the Pravda newspaper appealed. Forces of the Red Army of peasants and workers left from Moscow to fight the white guards. (02.27) Denikin’s army was stopped near Oryol, parts of the Red Army launched a counter attack. The Whites left Oryol on October 20. Soon, Voronezh and Kursk were liberated from the Denikin’s army. (03.16) In December 1919, the Red Army was succeeding in battles in Ukraine and entered Kiev. In January 1920, the Donets basin was taken over. Rostov, the center of the counterrevolutionary movement, was occupied. The White army of Denikin was defeated.
Anton Ivanovich Denikin (16 December 1872 – 8 August 1947) was a Lieutenant General in the Imperial Russian Army (1916) and afterwards a leading general of the White movement in the Russian Civil War.
This film recounts how Denikin led one final assault of the southern White forces in their final push to capture Moscow in the summer of 1919. For a time, it appeared that the White Army would succeed in its drive, but Denikin's army would be decisively defeated at Orel in October 1919, some 400 km south of Moscow. The White forces in southern Russia would be in constant retreat thereafter, eventually reaching the Crimea in March 1920.
During the Russian Civil War, an estimated 100,000 Jews perished in pogroms perpetrated by the forces of the Ukrainian People's Republic of Symon Petlyura and also at the hands of Denikin's Whites and other anti-Soviet armies.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: BELIEVERS FLOCK TO WITNESS A WEEPING ICON
Russian/Nat
Orthodox believers are flocking to a Moscow church to witness what many say is a minor miracle - a weeping icon of Russia's murdered Tsar Nicholas the Second.
Archpriest Vasily Golovanov of the Ascension Church in the Russian capital claims the icon oozes a steady flow of myrrh practically every day.
Golovanov says this evidence of a miracle is enough to qualify the murdered Russian Tsar for canonisation.
This is the Ascension Church in the Russian capital, Moscow.
It is here that Orthodox believers have been flocking to witness a weeping icon of Russia's murdered Tsar Nicholas the Second.
Many believe it is a minor miracle.
Archpriest Vasily Golovanov claims the icon oozes a steady flow of myrrh almost every day.
The myrrh, an oily amber-coloured substance, is said to have a subtle smell which is more noticeable on days when services are held for the murdered royal family.
One parishioner is convinced it is a miracle.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
One of the miraculous events you can see here in this church is a miraculous evaporating fog which appears on the glass. The icon makes miracles.
SUPER CAPTION: Parishioner
The Russian Orthodox Church stipulates proof of a miracle as one of its conditions for sainthood.
So far, the icon has received no official recognition from the Russian Orthodox Church and its leader, Patriarch Alexi the Second.
But Alexi is believed to have given his blessing for the icon to be displayed in this Moscow church.
The priest says an elderly parishioner took the icon of Tsar Nicholas to the church on November 7 last year - the anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
The icon came to us during a service on the evening of the 7th. They brought it to the church. It smelt very strongly. It really is a miraculous phenomenon. It's inexplicable by physical laws.
SUPER CAPTION: Archpriest Vasily Golovanov
Since then, hundreds of witnesses are said to have witnessed the flowing myrrh.
Golovanov says this evidence of a miracle should be enough to qualify the murdered Russian royal family for canonisation.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It's an encouraging signal. Russia must be reborn around the Orthodox Church and the Tsar.
SUPER CAPTION: Archpriest Vasily Golovanov
Nicholas the Second and the Russian royal family were gunned down in a cellar in the town Yekaterinburg in July 1918.
Their bones were finally buried in a ceremony in St Petersburg last summer.
