The Great Elephant
This incredible piece of engineering and art is situated in Nantes, France. Do you remember the Giant Spider build by the same two engineers/artists?
The Elephant is 12 metres high, 8 metres wide and 21 metres long; 48.4 tons of steel and wood (tulip. 450 horsepower motor. Spped 1 - 3 kmph. 60 cylinders (44 hydraulic, 6 pneumatic and 10 gas)
Located in the Warehouses of the shipyards that closed in 1987, Les Machines de L'ile is part of the Ile de nantes urban renewal project.
Together with many other mechanical giant insects and many other touristic interests including watching the workers build for their next projects. You will see the Great Elephant in action, the Machine Gallery, Marine World Carousel, Workshop, Cafe, restaurant and gift shop.

Situé dans les entrepôts des chantiers navals qui a fermé en 1987, Les Machines de l'Ile fait partie du projet de rénovation urbaine d'île de Nantes.
Ainsi que de nombreux autres insectes géants mécaniques et de nombreux autres intérêts touristiques dont je regarde les ouvriers construisent pour leurs prochains projets. Vous verrez le grand Eléphant en action, la Galerie de Machine, Carrousel de World Marine, atelier, Cafe, restaurant et boutique de cadeaux.
La Galerie des Machines de Nantes
Les anciens chantiers maritimes de Nantes ont été convertis en galerie des machines. De gigantesques automates inspirés du génie créatif du Nantais Jules Verne. Voici le compte-rendu de deux visites faites en septembre 2015.

Nantes, Les Machines de l’île - France 4K Travel Channel
Les Machines de l'île in Nantes developed into a tourist draw. Based on ideas of Jules Verne, a son of this city and of Leonardo da Vinci, François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice founded the project on the former shipyards of Nantes. The ideas were put into practice by the Performance group La Machine, an association of artists, engineers and craftsmen.
The biggest project up to now is the big elephant (Le Grand Éléphant). It is 12 meters high and was built out of 48,4 metric tons of steel and wood. Shortly before our arrival, the team had just completed an artificial dragon for China.
Le Carrousel des Mondes Marins, the giant carrousel of the sea world is equipped with mythical, mechanical figures from the imaginary world of Jules Verne.
In an exhibition hall more you find more objects, which you can try out.

Les Machines de l’île in Nantes haben sich zum Touristenmagnet entwickelt. Basierend auf Ideen von Jules Verne, einem Sohn dieser Stadt und von Leonardo da Vinci gründeten François Delarozière und Pierre Orefice das Projekt auf einem Gelände des Hafens von Nantes. Umgesetzt werden die Ideen von der Perfomance-Gruppe „La Machine“, einem Zusammenschluss von Künstlern, Ingenieuren und Handwerkern.
Das bisher größte Projekt ist der grosse Elephant (Le Grand Éléphant). Er ist 12 Meter hoch und besteht aus 48,4 Tonnen Stahl und Holz. Kurz vor unserer Ankunft wurde gerade ein künstlicher Drachen für China fertiggestellt.
Das Karussell der Meereswelten (Le Carrousel des Mondes Marins), das größere von zwei Karussells ist mit mythischen, mechanischen Figuren aus der imaginären Welt von Jules Verne bestückt.
In einer Ausstellungshalle können weitere Objekte besichtigt und natürlich auch ausprobiert werden.

Located on the banks of the Loire river, across from the Musée Jules Verne, the Carrousel des Mondes Marins seems to have been born in the belly of Île de Nantes, the city’s most maritime spot.
It is an incredible mechanical aquarium that the visitors discover at their own pace.

Die französische Stadt Nantes befindet sich ganz nah an der Atlantikküste und war früher vor allem für seine Schiffswerften bekannt. Weil aber keine Schiffe mehr in der Stadt gebaut werden, haben die Maschinenbauer vor rund zehn Jahren angefangen, an anderen Dingen herumzutüfteln. Mittlerweile ist eine richtige Insel aus beweglichen Maschinen entstanden.

C’est un bestiaire de machines vivantes et monumentales qui s’échappe aujourd’hui des Nefs des anciens chantiers navals de Nantes. Ce lieu surprenant est issu de l’imaginaire de Pierre Orefice et François Delarozière qui y a installé son atelier avec la Compagnie La Machine.Départ pour un voyage étonnant à bord du Grand éléphant de 12 mètres de haut !
Cette architecture en mouvement, équivalant à une maison de quatre étages, accueille cinquante passagers pour sillonner les abords des Nefs et bénéficier d’une vue imprenable sur le site des anciens chantiers navals.

Les Machines de L'ile ( Nantes - France ) is a must. 8€ each to ride on the grand elephant. Capacity is 50 passengers and this is a huge object. Rides last about 30 mins. Located in the former shipyards of Nantes. Go to the tourist office for directions. Tram will take you within a 5 minute walk from the attraction. Tram stop is Chantiers Navals.
These ride-able machines with in Les Machines de L'ile ( Nantes - France ) are very cool - you can take a look at their workshop, as long as you don't take pictures of the project in progress.
Les Machines de L'ile ( Nantes - France ) is a perfect family outing with kids young & not so young, journey into fantasy.
