900 Square Feet (84 Square Meters) a House Has 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms in Laguna Beach, California
“You’ve got to get the details spot-on in a small home,” says interior designer Clark Collins. In his case “small” means 900 square feet in a charming cottage in Laguna Beach, California. The dwellings in the area were built in the early to mid-1900s and were used on the weekends by families from Los Angeles and Pasadena.
“My goal for the exterior was to keep it simple and quaint,” Collins says. He added details like plant pot shelves, latticework and a Dutch door.
When Collins lifted up the wall-to-wall carpeting, he was delighted to find the original oak floors. The wood windows and mantel are also original to the cottage. He set out to replace missing original features by combing favorite antiques sources; the fireplace screen (from Santa Barbara Forge & Iron), for example, was a lucky find. It has “1946” stenciled on it — the year the cottage was built.
The city of Laguna Beach has identified homes and other structures with potential historic significance, but the register includes only structures built before 1942, so Collins’ house was slightly too young to be a candidate. However, he was able to research it himself to restore its original charm. His experience and advice regarding Laguna Beach can certainly help guide you no matter where you live.
The home’s original pine paneling had been covered with drywall, but Collins wanted to bring the look back. He took out the plasterboard and added vertical pine paneling. In his research he found that a 2- by 4-inch detail where the walls meet the tongue and groove ceiling was common back in the ’40s, so he added that as well.
The charming built-in curio cabinet is also original to the house. Collins added lighting from the era all over the home, including the fireplace sconces, which he had rewired and refurbished.
“Years ago I owned a lighting company; It’s become a real hobby and passion to find period light fixtures for each of my projects,” he says. He recommends combing local antiques stores, eBay and Etsy for period lighting. If you don’t want to go through the searching and refurbishing process, he recommends shopping at companies that make reproductions, like Rejuvenation.
All of the art and furniture pieces are from his personal collection. The seascape painting over the fireplace, “Windy Day at Laguna,” is by Dedrick Stuber, who arrived in California in the 1920s and painted many seascapes and landscapes there.
Collins made a nautical stair railing from an old wooden oar he found in his garage. The seascape above the oar is a modern piece by Geoff Krueger, an artist who hails from Orange County, California.
With a small kitchen, functionality is key. “Nothing is fussy,” Collins says. He chose soapstone, because it was appropriate to the home’s era and incredibly practical. “I was able to have a drainboard carved into the stone, which is both practical and a nice design detail,” he says. “I also felt the color contrast of the dark stone prevents your eye from getting bored.” At the same time, he kept the eye from getting overwhelmed; the cabinets are a simple Shaker style.
Collins added coastal details here and there without going overboard. For example, the refrigerator handles are solid-brass deck cleats from a nautical antiques store, and he hung two seaweed prints on the wall.
To fit seating into the tight space, he added a breakfast nook. The wraparound bench eliminated the need for chairs and added lots of much-needed storage space.
A refurbished 1911 Brascolite antique kitchen light fixture illuminates the nook. The plein air oil painting is by local artist Robin Hall.
One of the spot-on details Collins mentioned is this sweet built-in cabinet in the downstairs bedroom. “The cabinet provides storage and a place to display beach finds and good books — both essential for a weekend beach retreat,” he says.

The caned bed adds some British colonial style, as do the linens, by John Robshaw and Peter Dunham. A dhurrie rug grounds the room with soothing texture and is durable enough to stand up to the beach.
Collins’ passion for restoring Laguna Beach cottages continues; he completed another renovation after this one was done and is currently working on another.

Terraforming Arcadia: An Archaeological Perspective on French Wetland Agriculture in Nova Scotia
From the 1630s until their deportation in the 1750s, the French inhabitants of colonial Nova Scotia (the Acadians) created a subsistence economy rooted in the dyking and draining of tidal marshes. They knew a good thing when they saw it. While their cousins in the Saint Lawrence Valley struggled to feed livestock through the punishing Canadian winters and wrested pasturelands from region's formidable forests, the French inhabitants of the Bay of Fundy and its estuaries presided over 75,000 acres of lush tidal marshes. These environments produced virtually limitless fodder in the form of salt‐tolerant grasses and yielded remarkably fertile arable land when dammed and drained. Much of it is still farmed today. The historiography of French colonial wetland agriculture is interesting, partly because remnant dyke walls and enclosed fields are seen as monuments to French colonial culture. Their commemoration as a cultural achievement has become something of a trope to nationalist writers and the heritage apparatus, and academic research has also taken an avid interest. Historians and historical geographers have contributed to a better understanding of dyking technology, it origins, and the manner in which it was transferred from Europe to North America. The outputs of this agricultural system are also now reasonably well understood, although more work remains to be done here. Archaeology has been all but absent from the conversation. In this paper, I will demonstrate how an empirically grounded and theoretically informed archaeology contributes to a better understanding of French wetland agriculture. A material cultural approach is already significantly expanding the evidence base by excavating and analyzing dykeland infrastructure such as wooden sluices. Married to remote sensing and dendrochronology, it is allowing us to date the developmental sequences by which kin‐based labour successively enclosed thousands of acres of wetlands, while insights from Anthropology and ethnohistory provide new perspectives (and raise some new questions) about the meaning of wetland agriculture in the context of an Indigenous landscape.

SUMMARY
=======
New Urbanism is an urban design movement which promotes environmentally friendly habits by creating walkable neighborhoods containing a wide range of housing and job types. It arose in the United States in the early 1980s, and has gradually influenced many aspects of real estate development, urban planning, and municipal land-use strategies.
New Urbanism is strongly influenced by urban design practices that were prominent until the rise of the automobile prior to World War II; it encompasses ten basic principles such as traditional neighborhood design (TND) and transit-oriented development (TOD). These ideas can all be circled back to two concepts: building a sense of community and the development of ecological practices.
The organizing body for New Urbanism is the Congress for the New Urbanism, founded in 1993. Its foundational text is the Charter of the New Urbanism, which begins:
We advocate the restructuring of public policy and development practices to support the following principles: neighborhoods should be diverse in use and population; communities should be designed for the pedestrian and transit as well as the car; cities and towns should be shaped by physically defined and universally accessible public spaces and community institutions; urban places should be framed by architecture and landscape design that celebrate local history, climate, ecology, and building practice.
New Urbanists support: regional planning for open space; context-appropriate architecture and planning; adequate provision of infrastructure such as sporting facilities, libraries and community centres; and the balanced development of jobs and housing. They believe their strategies can reduce traffic congestion by encouraging the population to ride bikes, walk, or take the train. They also hope that this set up will increase the supply of affordable housing and rein in suburban sprawl. The Charter of the New Urbanism also covers issues such as historic preservation, safe streets, green building, and the re-development of brownfield land. The ten Principles of Intelligent Urbanism also phrase guidelines for new urbanist approaches.
Architecturally, new urbanist developments are often accompanied by New Classical, postmodern, or vernacular styles, although that is not always the case.

SUMMARY
=======
New France (French: Nouvelle-France) was the area colonized by France in North America during a period beginning with the exploration of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and ending with the cession of New France to Great Britain and Spain in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris (1763).
At its peak in 1712 (before the Treaty of Utrecht), the territory of New France, also sometimes known as the French North American Empire or Royal New France, consisted of five colonies, each with its own administration: Canada, the most developed colony and divided into the districts Québec, Trois-Rivières and Montréal (before 1717, extending south through the Illinois Country); Hudson's Bay; Acadie, in the northeast; Plaisance, on the island of Newfoundland, and Louisiane. (after 1717, extending north through the Illinois Country); Thus, it extended from Newfoundland to the Canadian prairies and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, including all the Great Lakes of North America.
In the sixteenth century, the lands were used primarily to draw from the wealth of natural resources such as furs through trade with the various indigenous peoples. In the seventeenth century, successful settlements began in Acadia, and in Quebec by the efforts of Champlain. By 1765, the population of the new Province of Quebec reached approximately 70,000 settlers.The 1713 Treaty of Utrecht resulted in France relinquishing its claims to mainland Acadia, the Hudson Bay and Newfoundland to England. France established the colony of Île Royale, now called Cape Breton Island, where they built the Fortress of Louisbourg.Acadia had a difficult history, with the British causing the Great Upheaval with the forced expulsion of the Acadians in the period from 1755 to 1764. This has been remembered on July 28 each year since 2003. Their descendants are dispersed in the Maritime Provinces of Canada, and in Maine and Louisiana in the United States, with small populations in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia and the Magdalen Islands. Some also went to France.
In 1763, France had ceded the rest of New France, except the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, to Great Britain and Spain at the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War (known as the French and Indian War in North America and especially the United States). Britain received Canada, Acadia, and the parts of French Louisiana which lay east of the Mississippi River – except for the Île d'Orléans, which was granted to Spain, along with the territory to the west – the larger portion of Louisiana.
In 1800, Spain returned its portion of Louisiana to France under the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso. However, French leader Napoleon Bonaparte in turn sold it to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, permanently ending French colonial efforts on the North American mainland.
New France eventually became absorbed within the United States and Canada, with the only vestige remaining under French rule being the tiny islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. In the United States, the legacy of New France includes numerous placenames as well as small pockets of French-speaking communities. In Canada, institutional bilingualism and strong Francophone identities are arguably the most enduring legacy of New France.
