Tea and Ancient Village Adventure in Jiaguan, Qionglai, Sichuan!
Outside of Chengdu and up in the mountains near Qionglai is the tea trade corridor of Sichuan that's got a history of over 2,000 years. A co-worker and I were invited to take part in a tea festival and tour of the area - free of charge!
While I can't give you a whole history of tea or really answer the question What is Chinese tea like?, this video can at least give you a little look at the spirit of tea and the feeling that surrounds the cultivation of tea throughout China!

wonderful world - Great Buddha Temple - China’s largest of this variety
Originally dating to 1098 (Western Xia dynasty), this behemoth of a temple contains an astonishing 35m-long sleeping Buddha – China’s largest of this variety – surrounded by mouldering clay arhats (Buddhists who have achieved enlightenment) and Qing-dynasty murals. Until the 1960s, small children would clamber into the huge Buddha and play around inside his tummy.

Chinese Natural Beauty: Jiuzhaigou Part 2 (CC)

TOURISTS.
(Closed Captioned)
The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!

Flaming Mountains, Turpan, China 71E3E84B 3073 4411 98CC AECFCC782D6B
The Flaming Mountains are hot. In the summer, the ground surface temperature can reach 80 degrees Celsius or 175 degrees Farhenheit. In the summer, the waves of desert heat and mirages dance on the red ridge that is furrowed by parallel gullies. So it does look like a wall of flames especially in the afternoons in a red sky.
There is a Flaming Mountain museum with a big thermometer, and a lot of Chinese tour groups go there. There are camel rides and kids excited about the Journey to the West and the characters like the Monkey King.

Garlic Pork (& Science City!?) // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 38
I’m exploring Chengdu’s Science City and eating suan ni bai rou aka Sichuan garlic pork slices. Suanni Bai Rou is pork leg simmered for hours and then carefully sliced and covered in chili oil and fresh garlic. It’s made from the same cut that ham is traditionally made from, so it’s pretty much un-smoked ham. The sauce’s flavors - spicy chili oil, soy sauce, and raw garlic - make it a somewhat unusual Sichuan dish, as it doesn’t contain any numbing peppercorn. Each slice of pork should have a nice hunk of lean meat, a layer of fat, and a small layer of skin. The combination of these layers makes the meat more flavourful, more tender, and adds variety in the texture. I also ordered a plate of tudou si, or potato shreds. This dish can be found in most Sichuan restaurants. It's simply small shreds of potato fried up in a wok for a bit with oil, and a splash of vinegar. the potato is less cooked than most western potato dishes, so there's a bit of crunch and a bit of raw taste. It was the perfect accompaniment to the pork.
Along with this meal, I visit Science City - an area south of Chengdu that’s being developed as an Eco-friendly commercial, retail, residential, and lifestyle hub. It’s being built around Xinglong Lake, a 3 square kilometer man-made lake that has been stocked with wildlife and surrounded with greenery. It really is a beautiful lake, and it can be seen from almost anywhere in Science City. It's also been setup to help cool down the surrounding buildings, filter the water, and prevent flooding. Science City is attracting many businesses. They're offering incentives for technological and science oriented businesses and facilities. Nokia has moved their global research and development there. You'll also find institutes dedicated to rail transport, aero and space engineering, dark matter research, renewable energy, laser research, and more. Science City is a perfect mix of technology and nature.
To visit it, take Metro Line 1 to the 2nd last stop: Xinglong Lake - Xīnglóng hú - 兴隆湖
Yes, the next stop is called Science City (Kēxué chéng - 科学城 ) - you can also get off there - but the majority of businesses and the large lake promenade is closer to the Xinglong Lake stop.
The lake has a path that goes completely around it. I think it's about 8 km around.

2018 China: Pingyao Shuanglin Temple
Located in the Qiaotou Village about six kilometers (four miles) to Pingyao Ancient City, the Shuanglin Temple is reputed to be the 'ancient painted sculptures museum'. It houses more than 2,000 colorful sculptures reflecting the exquisite skills of the artisans of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1997, it was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO as an important cultural site of Ping Yao City in 1997.
Originally, Shuanglin Temple was called the Zhongdu Temple but it was renamed Shuanglin during the Song Dynasty (960-1127). In Chinese, Shuang means two or double, and Lin, forest. The temple got its name from a Buddhist story. According to the Buddhist sutra, Sakyamuni who was the founder of Buddhism, entered nirvana under two trees; Hence, its name Shuanglin.
Reconstructed in 571, the Shuanglin Temple has a history of about 1,400 years. It consists of ten large and small halls, and the sutra chanting hall and the monks' rooms. The ten halls include the Heavenly Kings' Hall, the Arhats' Hall, the Mahavira Hall (Da Xiong Bao Dian), and the One-Thousand Buddha Hall, the Sakyamuni Hall, the Bodhisattva Hall, the Ti-tsang Bodhisattva Hall, the Guan Yu's Hall and two other halls. Guan Yu was a famous general of Shu during the Period of Three Kingdoms. Later, he would be worshipped as a god.

The Leprosy Project - Sichuan, China
For more than 40 years in China, people with leprosy were segregated into specific Leprosy Rehabilitation Villages. In Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Southern Sichuan, with a population of 4 million, there are nineteen such villages. . Each year, there are still about 120 new leprosy cases in Liangshan, and early detection remains a problem. For the past 20 years, effective multi-drug therapy for new cases of leprosy has been provided free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) through the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), but the long-term rehabilitation of sufferers, often with gross disabilities, has been largely neglected.
The Leprosy Project (the Project) began in 1996 when members of Rotary Clubs in Hong Kong began giving financial support to a church affiliated programme that worked with leprosy sufferers in Liangshan where the predominant population are members of the Yi Minority Culture. In 2003, the Rotary Club of Hong Kong South expanded its involvement by funding and providing medical and rehabilitation services to two villages. The Project has since grown and now serves and manages nine villages and 1,400 villagers, of which 350 are people affected by leprosy (PAL). Throughout we have worked with other NGOs in China such as Handa, a principal leprosy rehabilitation organisation based in Guangzhou.
The Project has twelve full-time staff in Xichang and an annual budget of RMB 2.5 million. Donations have been received in the past from the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation, and various organisations and foundations, such as St. Stephen's Chapel in Stanley, HSBC Trustees Limited, many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians in Hong Kong and globally.
The current phase of the project which started in April 2011 and runs to March 2014 is again expanding the scope of the project to include maintenance of the disabled in a mountainous setting with as much self care as possible. The programme will also include training in sustainable community development with agricultural assistance and micro finance loans. The aim is to make the villages as medically and economically self sufficient as possible.
The CDC in Liangshan has requested that the programme expand its services to ten more villages, which will be considered if funding can be secured.
All expenditures are monitored by the Hong Kong office to ensure 100% accountability for the funds raised and to oversee that milestones are achieved. The CEO works closely with the project teams, consultants and directors to keep the Project on track. The directors, as well as key donors, also make regular visits.
