Dr. Newman is a surgical oncologist, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Breast Care Center for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Newman holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard University, and she also obtained her undergraduate education at Harvard University with a major in chemistry. She attended medical school and completed her general surgery residency training at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. Dr. Newman was recruited to remain at Downstate following completion of her postgraduate training, and served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery with this program for several years. She completed her fellowship in surgical oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is board-certified in General Surgery and holds an American Board of Surgery Added Qualifications Certificate in Surgical Critical Care. Prior to assuming her current position at the University of Michigan, Dr. Newman served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas with a full-time commitment to research and clinical practice in the Surgical Breast Section, and was Associate Director for the Walt Breast Center at Wayne State University for two years.
Dr. Newman's primary research has focused on ethnicity-related variation in breast cancer risk and outcome, the evaluation and management of high-risk patients (including ductal lavage); broadened applications for induction chemotherapy, and special surgical techniques such as the skin-sparing mastectomy and lymphatic mapping/sentinel lymph node biopsy. Her basic science research has involved investigations of p27 and Her2/neu in breast cancer. Her extensive research related to disparities in breast cancer risk and outcome has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals and was recently featured on CNN's documentary Black in America 2. She maintains a very active community service record, and currently serves as Chief National Medical Advisor for the Sisters Network, Inc., a national African American breast cancer survivors support organization.
Dr. Newman holds leadership positions in the most prominent of oncologic academic and advocacy organizations: For the Society of Surgical Oncology she serves on the Executive Council and chairs the Disparities Committee; for the American Society of Clinical Oncology she co-chairs the Disparities Advisory Board and is the immediate past-cahir for the Health Services Committee; for the American Cancer Society she serves on the National Assembly, the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Division and is a member of its national committees on Incidence and Mortality as well as Breast Cancer. Dr. Newman also serves on the Executive Council for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and she chairs its Special Populations Committee. Dr. Newman serves as Editor of the Disparities Section for the prestigious journal Cancer, and she is Associate Editor for the Breast Section of Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Official journal of the Society of Surgical Oncology. She also serves on the Editorial Boards for numerous other leading academic journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology; CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians; and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.
Suzanne Lacy: We Are Here
Los Angeles-based artist Suzanne Lacy is internationally renowned as a pioneer in the field of socially engaged and public art. Her work incorporates the visions and voices of scores of people, in a practice that recognizes the essential collaborations involved in creativity. Her installations, videos, and performances have dealt with issues of sexual violence, rural and urban poverty, incarceration, gender identity, labor, and aging. Working collaboratively within traditions of fine art performance and community organizing, Lacy has realized large-scale projects in London, Brooklyn, Medellin, Los Angeles, Quito, Northwest England, Madrid, and, most recently, along the Irish border exploring local reactions to Brexit. She has exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum, the New Museum, and MoMA PS1 in New York, the Bilbao Museum in Spain, and most recently at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in a two-museum career retrospective.

Saya Woolfalk: World Builder
According to The Huffington Post, Saya Woolfalk “doesn’t create artworks, she creates worlds.” A New York-based artist who uses science fiction and fantasy to re-imagine societies and manufacture immersive, multimedia environments, Woolfalk’s work is highly narrative in nature. Daughter of a Japanese mother and an African American father, Woolfalk explores themes of ambiguity, difference, and cooperation. Her work is highly collaborative, and her captivating installations include projects with dancers, animators, filmmakers, and musicians. With the multiyear projects No Place, The Empathics, and ChimaTEK, Woolfalk has created the world of the Empathics, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic makeup and fuse with plants. Woolfalk has exhibited broadly in the world’s top contemporary art centers including PS1 MoMA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Studio Museum, Harlem, to name a few.

Michael Joseloff is an award-winning television producer and author of the book “Chasing Heisenberg.” In this interview Joseloff discusses the life and career of German physicist Werner Heisenberg and the German atomic bomb program during World War II. He provides an overview of the discovery of nuclear fission and impact in the United States and Germany. Joseloff describes the Alsos Mission, the Manhattan Project’s counterintelligence operation to determine how far along the German atomic bomb project was, and the people involved including Samuel Goudsmit and Boris Pash.
