Why Cybersecurity at UMBC?
Dr. Terry Thompson, of the UMBC Cybersecurity Graduate Program faculty, will present on the political, economic, military, and foreign policy dimensions of China's cyber strategy and operations.
We will explore:

* Why is there so much focus on offensive cyber operations?
* What is the Chinese view of the U.S. response (or lack of responses) to their cyber attacks on U.S. government and industry?
* Given the large amount of U.S. debt held by China, what is the rationale for cyber attacks that can damage the U.S. economy?
* Who is behind the strategy and operational planning and execution of China's cyber attacks on the U.S.?
* This webinar is a preview of Dr. Thompson's Spring 2016 course CYBR 691 Special Topics in Cybersecurity: Chinese Cyber Power: Perspectives and Implications.

Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price • FULL DOCUMENTARY FILM • BRAVE NEW FILMS
The film exposes Wal-Mart's unscrupulous business practices through interviews with former employees, small business owners, and footage of Walmart executives. SUBSCRIBE: BRAVE NEW FILMS BOXED SET:
(2:22) - How Walmart Destroys Communities - Whether it's a family rum hardware store or a small eye glass store, when Walmart opens in small towns like Middlefield, Ohio long established, independently run stores are hurt. The Hunter family open H&H Hardware in 1962. When a new Walmart was build in town, they were driven out of business.
(15:20) - How Walmart Profits from Poverty (And Sticks Taxpayers With The Bill) - Walmart stores are frequently short staffed, not because they can't find workers but because they want to save on their labor experiences. This comes from the top, the corporate doesn't budget enough money for payroll. Because Walmart doesn't pay fair wages, their employers need to go on public assistance programs.
(25:13) How Walmart Rolls Back Worker's Rights - Walmart is one of the most anti-unoin companies in America. Store managers keep an eye on employees they suspect are either sympathetic to unions or are active union organizers.
(33:56) - Walmart Cheats Workers - It is estimated that they cheated workers out of $150 million dollars. Walmart would teach managers how to digitally change people's time cards as not to pay overtime and reduce store experiences.
(44:35) -Subsidies - The subsidies Walmart gets from city governments takes funding away from public schools. When Walmart opened stored in Denver, they got $1.7 million in city subsidies, if the money had gone to the Denver Public Schools system, they wouldn't had have to shut down three schools. Subsidies also give Walmart an unfair business advantage over small, locally owned stores that offer better pay and benefits for their workers.
(54:46) - Environmental Ruin -In Belmont, North Carolina, a Catawba Riverkeeper noticed that runoff from herbicides and pesticides was flowing into the river and polluting the town's drinking water. It was only after the local news aired a report on the water contamination that a local manager moved those toxic substance to a better storage site. The company's main offices were unresponsive.
(1:00:10) - Imports From China - In China, factory workers can live in dorms owned by Walmart - workers pay rent and utilities. If they move out of the dorms, to live in a place not connected to Walmart, they still have to pay rent for the dorms. Workers work in factories with poor ventilation. They are told to lie to inspectors about how many days they work: six, when they really work seven days a week. All of this to make less than $3 a day.
(1:12:33) - Greed - Lee Scott, the CEO of Walmart made $27,207,799 in 2005 when, the average Walmart hourly sales employee made $13,861 annually. The family who owns Walmart, the Waltons, is one of America's wealthiest family, yet they barely give anything to charity. They are worth $102 billion.
(1:16:10) - No Security - Kidnappings, robberies, and car jackings...80% of crime that occurs at Walmarts in California takes place in the stores' parking lot, yet most of the stores' security officers are posted within the store. As early as 1994, Walmart knew that it had issues with its' parking lot security, but they hid these internal reports. They also knew that adding roving patrols in parking lots greatly reduce crime
(1:25:06) - Taking Control - Walmart is a powerful corporation! However, we can beat them. Two communities, one in Arizona and another in Southern California did just that! They stopped a Walmart from coming into their communities.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the leading industries in the People's Republic of China, covering synthetic chemicals and drugs, prepared Chinese medicines, medical devices, apparatus and instruments, hygiene materials, packing materials, and pharmaceutical machinery.
China accounts for 20% of the world's population but only 1.5% of the global drug market. China's changing health-care environment is designed to extend basic health insurance to a larger portion of the population and give individuals greater access to products and services. Following the period of change, the pharmaceutical industry is expected to continue its expansion.China, as of 2007, has around 3,000 to 6,000 domestic pharmaceutical manufacturers and around 14,000 domestic pharmaceutical distributors. The most often-cited adverse factors in the marketplace include a lack of protection of intellectual property rights, a lack of visibility for drug approval procedures, a lack of effective governmental oversight, poor corporate support for drug research, and differences in the treatment in China that are accorded to local and foreign firms. Nevertheless, China is reportedly expected to become the third-largest pharmaceuticals market in the world by 2021.Research and development are increasing, with Shanghai becoming one of the most important global drug research centers. Most notably, Novartis is expected to establish a large Research and development base in Shanghai that will be a pillar of its drug development.China's thousands of domestic companies account for 70% of the market, the top 10 companies about 20%, according to Business China. In contrast, the top 10 companies in most developed countries control about half the market. Since June 30, 2004, the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has been closing down manufacturers that do not meet the new GMP standards. Foreign players account for 10% to 20% of overall sales, depending on the types of medicines and ventures included in the count. However, sales at the top-tier Chinese companies are growing faster than at Western ones.
Guangzhou Public Security's Unwarranted Arrests

Guangzhou public security arrests people without any reason On November 4, three people in plainclothes, who claimed
they were with the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau,
forcibly entered into Falun Gong practitioner
Chen Ruichang's home around 12:00 midnight.
They conducted a search raid and took Chen Ruichang away.
These plainclothes police left no reason for the arrest
and only told Chen's family to await further news.
Chen Ruichang's wife, Liangzi Hui, said she was very worried
about her husband who had been suddenly taken away.
She hopes the U.S. government and the society as a whole
pays attention to the personal safety of Falun Gong practitioners and helps rescue her husband.
Liang Zihui, a Falun Gong practitioner in Guangzhou:
My name is Liang Zihui, my husband is Chen Ruichang.
He turned out to be the deputy director of the editing
department at Guangdong TV.
In the winter of 1998, Chen Ruichang found that after
practicing Falun Dafa, his wife got rid of the medicine
that she had relied on for many years, and the intensified
family relationship become harmonious.
To this end, he started to understand Falun Gong.
In the spring of 1999, Chen Ruichang decided to walk
into the ranks of Falun Gong practitioners, and to learn how to be a good person.
However, such a quiet day did not last long.
A few months later, the CCP started the illegal and brutal
repression of Falun Gong practitioners.
Liang Zihui: He had a very simple idea,
he thought the CCP should be fair.
Therefore, he decided to go to Beijing to tell the truth
to the CCP Central Committee with his opinion about how good Falun Gong is.
That was his purpose.
He also wrote a detailed letter to the State Bureau
for Letters and Visits in Beijing. But he was later caught.
Just like Chen Ruichang, many Falun Gong practitioners
from around the world went to Beijing to petition.
According to the Beijing public security, as of April 2001,
there were a total of 830,000 Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing based on the registration record.
A greater number of Falun Gong practitioners were caught
without any registration record, as they did not report their names.
Liang Zihui: My husband was sent to a brainwashing class
three times.
After the second time, he was sent to a Labor Camp
for one year as brainwashing class did not change his beliefs.
He was sent to the provincial brainwashing class the third time.
Several people came to his office attempting to force him
to change belief and sign several related documents.
He refused to do so and was later abducted.
Because he refused to change his belief, Chen Ruichang
was arrested several times.
On November 4, three plainclothes persons who claimed
they belonged to the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau,
forcibly entered into Chen Ruichang's home and took
him away around 12:00 at night.
According to Chen Ruichang's son, the plainclothes policemen
said they had been tracking Chen Ruichang for very long time.
Liang Zihui: They mentioned that they belong to Guangzhou
Municipal Public Security Bureau. They had two documents.
One was a search warrant, the other was an arrest warrant.
Both of the documents were signed by the Guangzhou
Municipal Public Security Bureau.
They searched the house and took many Dafa books
and related material. They arrested my husband.
My son asked them who they are, but they did not leave
their names and documents.
They just mentioned they would notify us
when the time came.
Both Liang Zihui and her husband are Falun Gong
practitioners.
She was arrested four times for practicing Falun Gong.
She was sentenced and sent to the labor camp illegally.
Her arrival to the US was bittersweet, as she was very worried
about Chen Ruichang and their son who was at home alone.
Liang said there are a lot of mysterious deaths of Falun Gong
practitioners after they were arrested in China.
Since the exposure of Sujiatun Thrombosis Hospital
in Shenyang, who participated in the living harvest of Falun Gong practitioners' organs,
the U.S. State Department Report on Human Rights this May
clearly mentioned for the first time the living organ harvest of Falun Gong practitioners carried out by the CCP.
On September 12, the U.S. Congress held
an Organ Harvest hearing for the first time.
Dana Rohrabacher, senior member of House Committee
of Foreign Affairs and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations,
presided over the hearing and said living organ harvesting
is an act of the devil and
to steal the organs of those imprisoned people who have
different beliefs or political opinions is a serious crime against humanity.
We must make the greatest efforts to bring everyone
involved in this evil to justice, he said.

There’s an App For That: The Role of Data Transparency in the War on Pollution
Over the past two decades, rapid economic growth powered by cheap, conventional energy had fueled an incredible increase in Chinese living standards lifting millions out of poverty. Yet today, China is grappling with a new challenge: the environmental costs of that growth, most commonly experienced through dangerously high levels of air pollution that are shortening lives throughout the country.
Chinese environmentalist Ma Jun is helping to change that. After convincing the Chinese government to encourage the release of real-time pollution data from industrial facilities, Jun and his nonprofit Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs created a smart phone app that allows the public to see, and report, where the worst polluters are located. This approach to pollution abatement, built on transparency, focuses on putting information out in the open in an organized and easily-accessible way, allowing citizens to call for change. Many in China credit the effort for helping to usher in recent signs of progress, and other countries are looking to the work as a model.
EPIC hosted Ma Jun for a talk on the role of transparency, citizen engagement, and the future of environmental regulation.

Επιπλέον η ομάδα Long Yun Kung Fu, πραγματοποίησε επίδειξη Tai Chi.

SUMMARY
=======
Jardine Matheson & Co., later Jardine Matheson & Co. Ltd., forerunner of today's Jardine Matheson Holdings, was a Far Eastern trading company founded in 1832 by Scotsmen William Jardine and James Matheson as senior partners. Trafficking opium, while trading cotton, tea, silk and a variety of other goods, from its early beginnings in Canton (modern day Guangzhou), in 1844 the firm established its head office in the new British colony of Hong Kong then proceeded to expand all along the China Coast.
By the end of the nineteenth century, Jardine, Matheson & Co. had become the largest of the foreign trading companies in the Far East and had expanded its activities into sectors including shipping, cotton mills and railway construction.
Further growth occurred in the early decades of the twentieth century with new cold storage, packing and brewing businesses while the firm also became the largest cotton spinner in Shanghai.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949, doing business in the country became increasingly problematic. As a result, foreign businesses gradually withdrew from the mainland with Jardines leaving in 1954 to reconsolidate its business in Hong Kong. The firm would not return to mainland China until 1979, following the reform and opening up of the country.

SUMMARY
=======
The 2008 Chinese milk scandal was a widespread food safety incident in China. The scandal involved milk and infant formula along with other food materials and components being adulterated with melamine. Of an estimated 300,000 victims in China, six babies died from kidney stones and other kidney damage and an estimated 54,000 babies were hospitalized. The chemical gives the appearance of higher protein content when added to milk, leading to protein deficiency in the formula. In a separate incident four years prior, watered-down milk had resulted in 12 infant deaths from malnutrition. The scandal broke on 16 July 2008, after sixteen babies in Gansu Province were diagnosed with kidney stones. The babies were fed infant formula produced by Shijiazhuang-based Sanlu Group. After the initial focus on Sanlu—market leader in the budget segment—government inspections revealed the problem existed to a lesser degree in products from 21 other companies, including an Arla Foods-Mengniu joint venture company known as Arla Mengniu, Yili, and Yashili. The issue raised concerns about food safety and political corruption in China, and damaged the reputation of China's food exports. At least 11 countries stopped all imports of Chinese dairy products. A number of criminal prosecutions were conducted by the Chinese government. Two people were executed, one given a suspended death penalty, three people receiving life imprisonment, two receiving 15-year jail terms, and seven local government officials, as well as the Director of the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), were fired or forced to resign. The World Health Organization referred to the incident as one of the largest food safety events it has had to deal with in recent years, and that the crisis of confidence among Chinese consumers would be hard to overcome. A spokesman said the scale of the problem proved it was clearly not an isolated accident, [but] a large-scale intentional activity to deceive consumers for simple, basic, short-term profits. In late October 2008, similar adulteration with melamine was discovered in eggs and possibly other food. The source was traced to melamine being added to animal feed, despite a ban imposed in June 2007 following the scandal over pet food ingredients ex ...
