Leura Cascades | Blue Mountains
We decided to do another day trip to the Blue Mountains and check out Leura Cascades. It was an amazing walk which didn't take to long either. There was plenty of lookout platforms and things to see! You can also decide to go down to the bottom of the waterfall which is a bit harder and takes about an hour return but it was definitely worth it :)

AUSTRALIA - A stroll around Leura, Blue Mountains NSW
Leura is a suburb in the City of Blue Mountains area that is located 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the series of small towns stretched along the Main Western railway line and Great Western Highway that bisects the Blue Mountains National Park. Leura is situated adjacent to Katoomba, the largest centre in the upper mountains, and the two towns merge along Leura's western edge.
The original inhabitants of the area were the Dharug people. Archaeological evidence at Lyrebird Dell in South Leura suggests that Aboriginal occupation of the region may date back more than 12,000 years.
The first Europeans to enter the area, in 1813, was the expedition of Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth. They were followed by the expedition of George Evans in November 1813 and the road-building party of William Cox in the following year.
When the western railway line was constructed across the Blue Mountains in 1867–68, a gatehouse (No 9) was erected where the line crossed the Western Road near the present Sorensen Bridge. The gatekeepers were the first permanent European residents of the area, Another early presence occurred following the discovery of coal in the Jamison Valley below the present Leura golf course in the early 1880s, which led to the establishment of a colliery.
It is a gorgeous little town filled with lovely places to eat and a wonderful place for a weekend getaway!

The picnic areas at Leura Cascades are not only great spots for a family picnic, but give easy access to the nearby bushwalks. As the site of the original Katoomba Baths there is considerable historic interest as well.
An unmarked track at the back of the upper picnic area leads past McKay's Lookout and up to the former Leura Falls Kiosk, now the Solitary Restaurant. From here there are access tracks to the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, Federal Pass, the Amphitheatre and a return track to the Leura Cascades.

This track is important for those walking down from Leura railway station to the Leura Cascades. I walked the other way, and then only as far as Malvern Road, before returning via the Prince Henry Cliff Walk.
If you are planning a day at Leura Cascades, this walk gives you a loop walk without forcing you onto the dangerous part of Cliff Drive (Blue Mountains Drive) where there is no proper track.

Amazing town of Leura in Australia
Leura's elevation of 985 metres (3,232 ft) AHD leads to occasional snowfall in winter and a climate that reflects all four seasons distinctly.
The village centre lies on Leura Mall which is divided at this point by a wide grassy median strip planted with flowering cherry trees. The historic streetscape has been largely preserved, although there was local concern regarding the development of a shopping complex on the site of a former distribution warehouse. Redesigned to better suit the Leura Mall ambience after consultations with the wider community, the new shopping complex is now complete, hosting a Woolworths supermarket and liquor store. The historic post office building is now home to a news agency. The Alexandra Hotel, not far from the railway station, offers panoramic views from its back veranda. There are a substantial number of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops along Leura Mall, among the boutiques, gift and antique shops.
Leura is home to many formal, English-style, cool-climate gardens, which provide elegant walks and the opportunity to visit when open to the public in early October each year.
In 2016, Leura was named in the list of top 50 most irresistible, exotic, historic and postcard-worthy small towns in Australia.

Leura Cascades, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia
Featuring expansive vistas of the Jamison Valley, cascading waterfalls, cliff escarpments and rainforest, the Leura Cascades is one of the most popular and picturesque short walks of the Blue Mountains. A great walk on a hot day as the majority of the walk is under shade.
WHERE: Leura Cascades is located in the Blue Mountains National Park. There are several entry points from which to access the falls. The easiest is from the Leura Cascades Picnic Area.
LENGTH: The whole length of the loop walk is 4.5 kilometres long (roughly 3 hours), however, most people walk to the falls and back - a much shorter (roughly half an hour) walk.
CATEGORY: This is an easy walk (always harder on the way back, which involves walking uphill). Suitable for children. Not suitable for disabled as it has many stairs.
COST: It's free to do this walk and to park in the small carpark at the Leura Cascades Picnic Area (off Cliff Drive).

Lake Burragorang is an Australian man-made water supply dammed reservoir.
Lake Burragorang is impounded by Warragamba Dam and is located in the lower Blue Mountains of New South Wales, within the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Site. The 2,031-gigalitre (4.47×1011 imp gal; 5.37×1011 US gal) reservoir collects water from the converged flows of the Coxs, Kowmung, Nattai, Wingecarribee, Wollondilly, and Warragamba rivers and their associated tributaries. The reservoir is the major water storage for greater metropolitan Sydney, and its dam wall is located approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) southwest of the Sydney central business district. More info:
