Leura Mall, Leura Blue Mountains Australia
Leura Mall Shopping Street in Leura Blue Mountains NSW Australia in January 2019
Amazing town of Leura in Australia
Leura's elevation of 985 metres (3,232 ft) AHD leads to occasional snowfall in winter and a climate that reflects all four seasons distinctly.
The village centre lies on Leura Mall which is divided at this point by a wide grassy median strip planted with flowering cherry trees. The historic streetscape has been largely preserved, although there was local concern regarding the development of a shopping complex on the site of a former distribution warehouse. Redesigned to better suit the Leura Mall ambience after consultations with the wider community, the new shopping complex is now complete, hosting a Woolworths supermarket and liquor store. The historic post office building is now home to a news agency. The Alexandra Hotel, not far from the railway station, offers panoramic views from its back veranda. There are a substantial number of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops along Leura Mall, among the boutiques, gift and antique shops.
Leura is home to many formal, English-style, cool-climate gardens, which provide elegant walks and the opportunity to visit when open to the public in early October each year.
In 2016, Leura was named in the list of top 50 most irresistible, exotic, historic and postcard-worthy small towns in Australia.

AUSTRALIA - A stroll around Leura, Blue Mountains NSW
Leura is a suburb in the City of Blue Mountains area that is located 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the series of small towns stretched along the Main Western railway line and Great Western Highway that bisects the Blue Mountains National Park. Leura is situated adjacent to Katoomba, the largest centre in the upper mountains, and the two towns merge along Leura's western edge.
The original inhabitants of the area were the Dharug people. Archaeological evidence at Lyrebird Dell in South Leura suggests that Aboriginal occupation of the region may date back more than 12,000 years.
The first Europeans to enter the area, in 1813, was the expedition of Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth. They were followed by the expedition of George Evans in November 1813 and the road-building party of William Cox in the following year.
When the western railway line was constructed across the Blue Mountains in 1867–68, a gatehouse (No 9) was erected where the line crossed the Western Road near the present Sorensen Bridge. The gatekeepers were the first permanent European residents of the area, Another early presence occurred following the discovery of coal in the Jamison Valley below the present Leura golf course in the early 1880s, which led to the establishment of a colliery.
It is a gorgeous little town filled with lovely places to eat and a wonderful place for a weekend getaway!

Trains in the Snow at Leura & Katoomba
Decent snowfall came to the Upper Blue Mountains (along with much of the eastern half of NSW and into the southern reaches of Queensland) on the 16th - 17th of July 2015. Train services continued over the Mountains throughout the snowfall, albeit with extensive delays at times, until planned trackwork for the weekend of the 18th - 19th was thrown into disarray by ongoing road closures meaning that the buses that were to replace trains west of Springwood were unable to run beyond Katoomba, forcing a return to limited train services on Saturday and close to normal services on Sunday.
The scenes in this video are:
00:00 - The 19.18 Central to Mount Victoria service, worked by V24, stops at Leura shortly before the snowfall began.
01:59 - G514, BRM002, S317 and 44206 follow closely behind with a completely empty 1845 container to Kelso just as the first wet flakes begin to fall. S317 is carrying its new livery inspired by that of Australian National CLPs.
03:47 - 10 minutes later, CM3302, G513, G511 and BRM001 pass through with CA01 to Clarence Colliery, wet snow falling thicker now.
05:19 - Now at Katoomba, the snow is dry and settling as the 20.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V10, makes its stop.
07:04 - 8123 and 8106 roll by with train number 1821.
08:19 - The last Up interurban for the day, the 21.34 Lithgow to Central service, is about 20 minutes late and the two centre carriages of V21 are locked off due to windows having been kicked out.
10:13 - On Friday morning, the 08.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V19, is about 20 minutes late arriving into Katoomba, where it would sit for some time before continuing. The light shower now would be the last snow to fall.
10:59 - V24 departs Katoomba with what is probably the 09.25 Lithgow to Central service running a bit over 40 minutes late.
11:31 - The 11.25 Lithgow to Central service, worked by V19, and the 10.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V48, are only a few minutes late as the sun comes out and the melt begins.
