Walking Madeira - Caldeirão Verde levada walk
This is without no doubt one of the most beautiful levadas on Madeira Island. It is located in the Laurissilva forest (World Heritage by UNESCO since 1999) and its main characteristics are certainly the predominant emerald-green colours forest. The fantastic views of S. Jorge and the large presence of water in almost all the journey. After going through five small tunnels of natural basaltic rock we can delight in the waterfall of Caldeirão Verde, a beautiful waterfall with crystal clear water, a truly breathtaking landscape.

Madeira Levada do Caldeirão Verde 13 Km. Back & Forth walked
Levada do Caldeirão Verde: Lush vegetation, abundant water, natural tunnels and fantastic views are some of the attractions of this sought after levada.
The Levada round trip from Queimadas to the green cauldron Caldeirão Verde starts near Santana at about 900 m altitude. It is one of the most spectacular (and most popular) levada walks.
Along this levada, the water created imposing gorges and a jungle-like vegetation. The tour is described as demanding in many tour guides: This is a bit exaggerated and refers at most to the length of the tour and the steep slopes in some places, but which are secured by wire. The tour starts at the idyllic picnic parking lot and leads through an almost mystical coniferous forest with oversized hydrangeas. Laurel trees, tree heaths and small flower carpet on the damp walls and along the tiny streams characterize the picture.
The high humidity makes moss grow everywhere and different mushrooms stick their heads out of the soft ground. You will also discover ferns and old trees with lichen. There are views of Santana and Pico Ruivo. You reach a tunnel (about 50 meters), which is to be crossed (torch and rain protection necessary, since it is stockfinster and from the walls drips). The goal is the kettle with high walls, covered with ferns, from which a waterfall of 100 m height falls into the depth and forms at the foot a small lake. The water is mostly refreshing cool and a long bathing stay rather unlikely.
The landscape is however so enchanting, and invites you to stay longer. Even if it goes the same way, the landscape now appears in a different light and offers new photographs from the new perspective.
Walking time back and forth approx. 4.5 hrs.

Charming trail (moderate level ,13 km) in the vicinity of the small town of Santana
In Madeira, the levadas originated out of the necessity of bringing large amounts of water from the west and northwest of the island to the drier southeast, which is more conducive to habitation and agriculture, such as sugar cane production. They were used in the past also by women to wash clothes in areas where running water to homes was not available. The idea of this style of water channel was brought to Portugal by the Moors during the time of al-Andalus. Similar examples can still be found in Iberia, such as some Acequias in Spain.
In the sixteenth century the Portuguese started building levadas to carry water to the agricultural regions. The most recent were made in the 1940s. Madeira is very mountainous, and building the levadas was often difficult. Many are cut into the sides of mountains, and it was also necessary to dig 25 kilometres (16 mi) of tunnels.
