LEVEN CANYON SUNRISE | VLOG 005
The lads and I decided to spend our weekend off camping and relaxing at the Leven Canyon which is out the back of Ulverstone. We spent the afternoon around the bonfire until we noticed some incredible colour in the sky and sprinted up the hill to the lookout to shoot sunset. The following morning we woke up to the freezing winds that were blowing from Black Bluff which was covered in snow and went up to the lookout again to shoot sunrise. We were treated with an incredible pink colour throughout the sky.

Leven Canyon
This is a little vlog I made. My family and I went out to Leven Canyon in Ulverston, Tasmania, to get a breather from everything. I had so much fun! I recommend going if you love bushwalking and the views are amazing.
Sorry if the audio is a bit choppy at times, this was recorded on my phone so there was not much I could do.

LEVEN CANYON (Must see in Nietta, Tasmania)
Leven Canyon is a tourist destination on the River Leven. It is located 52.4 kilometres from Devonport in Tasmania. The river runs through 300-metre limestone cliffs carved through the Loongana Range, down to the Bass Strait. Well worth a visit. Facilities reasonably basic, but you come for the view. The walk is easy and can be managed by small children. Check out as we explore this magical area in Nietta.

Leven Canyon Lookout - Part 2 (Cruickshanks Lookout)
Cruickshanks Lookout Track - It’s rare in the world to find a powerful place like Leven Canyon that’s so easy to access. Enjoy the excitement of the canyon, only 45 minutes away from tranquil beaches and coastal parklands. The reserve, almost 2,500 ha, is a refuge for Tasmanian plants, animals and birds. Experience them on a range of fascinating walks, most of them easy. Relax in bushland surrounds while having a picnic or barbecue. There’s much to explore, so allow at least two hours on-site.
PART 2 (Cruickshanks Lookout)
Enjoy breathtaking Canyon views from the lookout, 275m above the Leven River. Dominant plants nearby are the ‘tough characters’ of the eucalypt family – Smithton peppermints, which grow on less fertile soils. On the ground are small trigger plants and greenhood and other orchids, in season.

West Ulverstone
A little place I visited not long ago.
Herb's Story
HERB, RESIDENT: WEST ULVERSTONE, TASMANIA
Herb is not sure how he ended up living in West Ulverstone on Tasmania’s scenic north coast but he is happy to have his feet under the table after a colourful life. He lives in a former Housing Tasmania property which Housing Choices Tasmania took management of in 2013. Herb signed on as an Housing Choices Tasmania tenant in early 2014.
Herb grew up on the family dairy farm in Gippsland, and after a stint in the army, he worked for 20 years as an underground miner in Tasmania, which he loved for the mateship. He also grew to love the Tasmanian wilderness when he took a job clearing the track at Cradle Mountain. ”I love the mountains and the wilderness just fascinates me.”
A father of four, Herb stays in touch with his adult children that all live interstate. “When my son got cancer and then I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer, I sort of changed my whole view of everything. I keep pretty much to myself and it’s nice and quiet here.”
As part of Herb’s new lease agreement, Housing Choices Tasmania has upgraded the older timber home with carpets for the first time and has fixed the leaks and drafts. “It’s a hell of a lot warmer now in here and it’s just more cosy”, he said.
A secure weatherproof, home has enabled Herb to pursue his love of landscape painting, working from memory in the comfort of his living room. He was a proud finalist in Tasmania’s 2015 Muralfest mural competition, which attracts artists from interstate and overseas.
Herb maintains a vegetable garden, keeps chooks and visits the local neighbourhood centre for its monthly meetings. He is exploring the idea of teaching young unemployed people to paint. “I’m more aware of other people’s troubles now. You might think that you’ve got problems but there’s a lot of other people worse off.”
