Marine Ranger Mahathi Bwana
Third in our #10moran series is Mahathi Bwana.
A few years ago, fisherman Mahathi traded in his net for a clip-board and snorkel mask. He’s now a marine ranger, working to promote sustainable fishing methods and marine conservation in his community of Pate Island. Thanks to Mahathi and his fellow rangers, Pate Marine Community Conservancy is leading the way for locally led marine conservation.
At the end of 2017, Pate become one of the first community conservancies to establish Locally Managed Marine Areas - protected sites aimed at securing fish breeding grounds for more sustainable fisheries. Mahathi and his team also work to raise awareness about the consequences of illegal mangrove logging and turtle poaching.

Watu hulisha ngombe kwa community conservancy?
Omar Godana - Chairman Nasuulu Community Conservancy
Poaching
Over 70% of Kenya's wildlife is found outside national parks, and it will only thrive – and survive – if local communities become more involved in conservation and benefit from the presence of wild animals. Experience over the past decade suggests that community conservancies represent one of the most effective ways of conserving wildlife outside protected areas.
NRT has established a simple, cost-effective system to monitor changes in the abundance of wildlife within the conservancies. The Conservancy Management Monitoring System (CoMMS) is based on measuring the relative abundance of species within the conservancies, gauged not by their absolute numbers but on sightings by rangers. Approximately 200 rangers are now gathering data about wildlife on a daily basis over an area of 900,000 hectares. The focus has been on seven species which are a priority for conservation: elephant, eland, giraffe, oryx, lion, wild dog and Grevy's zebra.
In this photofilm NRT ecologist Juliet King provides an insight into some of the key findings of this ranger-based monitoring system. You can also listen to two podcasts which focus on specific aspects of wildlife management. In the first of these, Juliet describes a project to restore the population of hirola, the world's most endangered antelope, in Ishaqbini Conservancy. In the second, she talks about the relationship between pastoralist communities and lions, a species in decline in northern Kenya.

Livestock
Most pastoralists in northern Kenya live many miles – and many days' walk – from the nearest markets. This means they tend to be at the mercy of traders who offer meagre prices. However, an innovative programme launched in 2008 by NRT, Ol Pejata Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is now providing pastoralists from community conservancies with better-than-market prices for their cattle. At the same time, the programme is encouraging community conservancies to improve their wildlife management.
The Linking Livestock to Wildlife Conservation Programme has established a set of criteria for judging conservancies. Those that perform best – in terms of conserving wildlife, good governance and improved security – have the opportunity to sell cattle direct to NRT. NRT then pays pastoralists to trek the cattle to Lewa, for a period of quarantine, after which they are fattened up at Ol Pejeta.
By 2014, the programme had purchased over 7000 cattle from 11 conservancies. The conservancies benefit from 2.5% purchase levy, paid by the sellers, and 5% sales levy paid by NRT. As NRT Community Development Officer Gabriel Nyausi explains in this photofilm, these funds are supporting development project in the conservancies and helping to pay for their management. Little wonder, then, that the programme has proved highly popular with pastoralists.

CAMEL HERDERS IN TROUBLE AS KWS VOWS TO FLASH THEM OUT FROM KORA NATIONAL PARK
The Kenya wildlife service (KWS) has vowed to flash out all camel herders who have invaded Kora and Meru National parks with hundreds of camels.
Kora National Park has for years remained the hideout of camel herders once they face resistance from Kitui, or even sometimes when they commit crime along the border between Kitui and Tana River counties.
Speaking on an Interview at Kora Nationa Park, the Chief warden in Charge of Meru and Kora National parks Bakari Chongwa warned farmers who are grazing their livestock inside the game park and nearby game reserves that they would stand to lose when a planned operation to flash out them kicks off.
Mr. Chongwa said that currently Kora National Park is facing enormous challenges from the camel herders who have made the national park insecure, owing to the fact that it was in the park that George Adamson who had started a Lion conservancy was killed by armed bandits.
The warden urged all farmers from either Kitui or Tana River counties to take off their animals from the park the soonest possible or else they would only have themselves to blame.
