Lewis Spring Falls
The 4th tallest waterfall in SNP at 81 feet, encased by pure wilderness. Lewis Spring is not only the principal source of water for the Big Meadows development, but it's also the source of Hawksbill Creek (which forms Lewis Spring Falls), that eventually flows through the town of Luray, Virginia before joining the Shenandoah River.
Not one of the most photogenic waterfalls at Shenandoah, you either love or hate photographing it. I've had my share of hating it through the years. Been there several times and have never really been pleased with my end results. But I decided to give it another try after some decent rainfall totals. I don't really care for shooting waterfalls when there is no greenery, but one has to take the high water opportunities when they come along.
The one downside to this waterfall is that you have to view it from an observation point that swings out to the left of it. Problem is that you can't view the entire length of the falls from here. So one Saturday morning in November 2009, I decided to bushwhack to the bottom of it. It's an awesome wilderness waterfall if you view it from the bottom up. But I seriously doubt if that will ever happen again in my lifetime - sometimes my levels of enthusiasm override my better judgement!

Dark Hollow Falls (Upper)
Dark Hollow Falls, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. The stream that runs parallel with the hiking trail is Hogcamp Branch, which drains Big Meadows Swamp and becomes the principal tributary of Rose River.
There's a fantastic view of the falls from the bottom. The water drops 70 feet, in a series of cascades, over the crumbling greenstone of an ancient lava flow. Thomas Jefferson once stood here and admired the falls. Jefferson spent a great deal of time exploring these mountains, and studying their plants and animals. He was so fond of the Blue Ridge that at Monticello he put the outbuildings below ground, so as not to interfere with his view of the mountains.
The last segment in this clip was taken from the head of the falls at the top, with a slight pan downwards.

Dark Hollow Falls on Skyline Drive, Virginia
One of quite a few videos that I took of the Dark Hollow Falls that are located .8 miles off of the main stretch of Skyline Drive. It was a bit of a hike to get to it, but I think it was worth it.

Jumping Waterfalls – Shenandoah National Park
Drove out to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to camp, hike, take photos, and jump into waterfalls. With just 36 hours in the park, we saw 6 bears and 4 waterfalls – a recipe for wilderness success.

Skyland black bear
Longer video of the black bear we saw May 31, 2010. He/she was calmly foraging in the woods about 100 feet from a road leading to some lodge rooms at Skyland in Shenandoah National Park, and was unperturbed by the dozen or so onlookers and their cameras and their cars.
Corbin Cabin in Shenandoah National Park
This is an old log cabin I found off a trail in Shenandoah National Park. The Corbin Cabin is a log structure built by George T. Corbin in 1909 in the Nicholson Hollow area of what is now Shenandoah National Park. Corbin was forced to vacate the land on which the cabin sits in 1938, when the land was added to Shenandoah National Park. The cabin is unique in that it is one of a small number of buildings located in Nicholson Hollow spared during the creation of the park, and still remains standing despite recent forest fires. This is a link on the area and the trail and there are a few ways to get where I was -
Please note that this cabin can only be used by reservation only. See this website for details -
