Tough Rides: China, Episode 5: Mount Everest and Lhasa
MojoTravels is proud to present: Tough Rides. Subscribe:
In 2010, when Canadian brothers Colin Pyle and Ryan Pyle set out from Shanghai on a motorcycle journey that had never previously been attempted, they thought they had some idea of what lay ahead of them. It was a misconception that became evident by the end of Day 1. But, despite the many challenges they faced, 65 days and 12,000 miles later they'd succeeded in circumnavigating China.
In this fifth episode from Ryan Pyle Productions, a local Zhongba motorcycle repairman comes to the Pyle brother's rescue, managing to get the BMW bike clutch back in working order. But further disaster strikes when Colin's bike blows a tyre. The journey is now in real jeopardy, with both bikes off the road and no clutch parts available in all of China.

The Norbulingka palace (Lhasa - Tibet - China)
(EN) Norbulingka (Tibetan: ནོར་བུ་གླིང་ཀ་; Wylie: Nor-bu-gling-ka; simplified Chinese: 罗布林卡; traditional Chinese: 羅布林卡) (literally: The Jewelled Park) is a palace and surrounding park in Lhasa, Tibet, built from 1755. It served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas from the 1780s up until the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in 1959. Part of the Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace, Norbulingka is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001. It was built by the 7th Dalai Lama and served both as administrative centre and religious centre. It is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture.
Norbulingka Palace is situated in the west side of Lhasa, a short distance to the southwest of Potala Palace. Norbulingka covers an area of around 36 hectares (89 acres) and considered to be the largest man made garden in Tibet.
Norbulingka park is considered the premier park of all such horticultural parks in similar ethnic settings in Tibet. During the summer and autumn months, the parks in Tibet, including the Norbulinga, become hubs of entertainment with dancing, singing, music and festivities. The park is where the annual Sho Dun or 'Yoghurt Festival' is held.
The Norbulingka palace has been mostly identified with the 13th and the 14th Dalai Lamas who commissioned most of the structures seen here now. During the invasion of Tibet in 1950, a number of buildings were damaged, but were rebuilt beginning in 2003, when the Chinese government initiated renovation works here to restore some of the damaged structures, and also the greenery, the flower gardens and the lakes (wikipedia).

Lhasa, Tibet China
Lhasa is the of Tibet China and the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau, after Xining. At an altitude of 3,490 meters (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. It contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Jokhang, Potala and Norbulingka palaces.
The Barkhor is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. The Barkor is a popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang. The Tromzikhang market is busy in Barkhor, and the area is a major tourist attraction.
The Jokhang Temple is located on Barkhor Square in Lhasa. For most Tibetans it is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. It is in some regards pan-sectarian, but is presently controlled by the Gelug school. The temple's architectural style is a mixture of Indian vihara design, Chinese Tang Dynasty design, and Nepalese design.
The Potala Palace was named after Mount Potala, the abode of Chenresig or Avalokitesvara. The Potala Palace was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama self-exile in 1959. The first palace was built in 637 by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo, as a present for his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty. The construction of the modern Potala Palace in 1645 after one of his spiritual advisers, Konchog Chophel (d. 1646), pointed out that the site was ideal as a seat of government, situated as it is between Drepung and Sera monasteries and the old city of Lhasa. Today, the Potala Palace is a museum.
Norbulingka is a palace and surrounding park in Lhasa, Tibet, built from 1755 by the 7th Dalai Lama and it is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. It served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas from the 1780s up until the 14th Dalai Lama's self-exile in 1959. Part of the Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace, Norbulingka is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001.

My name is Park Choong-ho. On the 14th (March), I had lunch with other Korean tourists at a Korean restaurant, and on our way back to the hotel at around 3-4 p.m., we saw many people crowded in front of the hotel. I didn't know what was going on, but we saw people throwing rocks at cars and bicycles that were passing on the streets. It was very scary, so we went into the hotel quickly. At the hotel, people were watching outside with doors locked. All stores were closed down, and the Tibetans kept throwing rocks at cars and shouting.

STORYLINE
AP Television obtained amateur video from a Korean tourist in Lhasa, who was filming events in the Tibetan capital on Friday 14 March, when protests against Chinese rule turned violent, sparking a brutal crackdown by Beijing.
The tourist, Park Choong-ho, said he shot the video of rioters on the street from his hotel on Beijing East Road (Beijing Dong Lu), which is within walking distance of Barkhor, the Tibetan quarter.
AP Television cannot independently verify this information.
Park told AP Television he saw people throwing rocks at cars and bicycles that were passing on the streets.
All stores were closed down, and the Tibetans kept throwing rocks at cars and shouting, he added.
Park filmed protesters throwing rocks at closed storefronts, and tearing down a Chinese flag hanging outside a closed shop.
He observed the protesters with other tourists standing alongside him.
The protests in Lhasa have been the biggest challenge in almost two decades to Chinese rule in Tibet, a Himalayan region that the People's Liberation Army occupied in 1950 after several decades of effective independence.
The violence in Lhasa sparked sympathy demonstrations in neighbouring provinces in China, prompting Beijing to blanket a huge area with troops and warn tourists and foreign journalists to stay away.
China's leadership, has blamed the unrest on Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and his supporters and vigorously defended its reputation as a suitable host for the Beijing Olympics.
