Sure Welders Turn out as Sure Nuclear Power Plant in east China
When it comes to nuclear power plant, everything has to be 100-percent sure: including pipeline welders who have to have sure eyes, sure hands, sure minds and sure guts to take up the responsibility.
Wei Xiaopeng, like his predecessors and his peers, is one such sure pipeline welder who cannot stop while most others are observing the National Day holidays of China.
Pipelines to a nuclear power plant is like cardio-arteries to a human being. During their lifespan of 40 years, these pipelines have to pump in and out of the nuclear reactor materials of high radiation, high temperature, in high pressure and in high velocity. So sure welders with sure everything have to do the job for sure results.
Once it leaks, this plant becomes a crap and the whole area will be negatively impacted environmentally and ecologically, Wei's sureness comes from his understanding about the whole thing.
To guarantee safety, the reactor pipelines measure 70 millimeters in their wall thickness. This is the thickest pipeline now in China. Due to the complex composition of the materials used in making the pipelines, welders have to do their job only manually.
Wei Xiaopeng was with his tutors Peng Cunli and Yao Jun when the initial phase of construction started at the Tianwan Bay Nuclear Power Plant, doing manual welding all along. Now by the start of the second-phase construction, Peng and Yao are already past their prime years as sure welders.
I've passed on my skills, my techniques and my experiences to the younger welders who in turn pass them on to the upcoming generation of welders, says Peng Cunli.
Though welding masters like Peng and Yao cannot do the welding by themselves now, their skills and spirits are still with their proteges who are welding the second-phase pipelines with similar if not surer hands.
I've once told myself I'd do just as well, no, I'd do even better, says Wei Xiaopeng.
As welding enters its conclusion phase, monsoon rains have arrived to add difficulty to the already difficult and exacting task of sure welding.
Continuous rains have increased the humidity in where we work significantly, up to a level which perilously affects our welding. This is because the burning of welding rods would generate pores in fusion welding. These pores are just like phantoms, explains Wei.
But phantoms do wreak havoc with human beings from time to time when least expected.
The more there are such pores, the easier it is for stress to concentrate in the welded part. This concentration of stress will result in cracks which may break in the end, says Wei.
The tried and true way to prevent pores from generating is to pre-heat the welding environment to 200 degrees Celsius. This means Wei and his peers have to work in not only dripping humidity but also steaming temperature, all for the sake of precise and perfect welding.
The inside of a pipeline is 90 centimeters across, some 20 centimeters wider than Wei's shoulder. It cannot be comfortable for Wei to tuck himself into such an environment to burn the welding rod to make it even more unpleasant.
If you cannot align a good angle of sight, you cannot guarantee quality welding. So I sometimes have to endure with the burning of molten metal which falls onto my face. It really hurts, a lot, admits Wei Xiaopeng.
Welding rods burn normally only if you keep your hands steady. Only then the quality of welding will be guaranteed. When it comes to responsibility, someone has to come out and shoulder it, Wei quickly adds.
Now among the most senior welders, Wei Xiaopeng has sacrificed his seven-day National Day holidays and worked along supervising the welding at the nuclear power plant in the coastal city of Lianyungang of east China's Jiangsu Province.
To Wei and his peers working under conditions like this, it is sure both a matter of honor as well as a matter of responsibility, to themselves and to their country.

Green algae covers beaches in Qingdao, China - no comment
Chinese tourists at the east coast resort of Qingdao were forced to share their beach with a carpet of bright green algae. The phenomenon, known as an algal bloom, occurs when the temperature of the sea, off eastern China's Shandong province, rises to between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.
