Sarlat la Canéda and the Dordogne Region of France
Sarlat la Caneda is located in the Dordogne region of France. It is less visited than more popular regions like Provence or Burgundy.
When dreaming of France, I imagine myself sitting in Luxembourg Gardens, strolling along the River Seine, through the narrow streets of the Latin Quarter, drinking strong coffee in the afternoon. No agenda, just walking, looking, tasting, smelling, enjoying. Of course, there is more to France than Paris. The honey colored buildings in the medieval town of Sarlat, create a warm welcoming feeling. The Dordogne region is know for it's gourmet specialties and the Sarlat Saturday Market is the place to find them. I spent the morning strolling from vendor to vendor, putting together the pieces...some creamy goat cheese, ripe red tomatoes, fresh tarragon, cod from the fishmonger...for that evening's feast. The surrounding country side is scenic and peaceful. The river side town of Vitrac has several canoe rental companies. It is an easy float down the Dordogne River, drifting by villages and ending in tiny Beynac. The village is built into the hillside and topped by 12th century gray stoned chateau. The hike up is steep but well worth it for the wide open view of the river valley. France has an abundance of bike trails. We rented from Bike Bus in Castelnaud. The owner, Joel, gave us some great local advice and a map. The ride to Daglan, through woods and fields, was easy and almost car free. Bring a sandwich, maybe some wine (actually definitely some wine) and stop for a picnic lunch along the river bank. What is it about travel that makes the ordinary...a taste of cheese, the ringing of a church bell, the smell of a fire burning in a chimney...seem extraordinary? I don't know but I will keep trying to find out.

Voie Verte - Cycling the Greenway from Sarlat to Cazoules
One of the most exciting things we have found since exploring Spain and France on our e-bikes is the greenways. In Spain they’re called the Vias Verdes, in France they’re called the Véloroutes Voies Vertes, and they are the same concept: a series of disused railway lines that have been recovered and reconditioned to form pathways that take you through some of the most stunning and hidden parts of the country. They’re perfect for cyclists and walkers alike. The best part is that because their foundation is a railway line, they are pretty much flat the entire way, leaving you plenty of energy to enjoy your surroundings.
