360-Degree : Liberty Monument
Situated in the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus - commissioned by Makarios III in 1957, and ironically, erected a few days before the invasion of 1974; the Liberty Monument was never given an official unveiling.
The Liberty Monument
The Monument of Liberty was erected in honor of the organization EOKA that existed in the 60s - 70s of the last century under the command of the legendary Cypriot, former colonel of the Greek army, Grivas Digenis, who first fought for the liberation of Cyprus from the British colonialists, and then for the overthrow of the first President of the Republic of Cyprus Makarios III. The organization has provoked the invasion of the Turkish army on the island which resulted in the formation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The monument includes 14 statues of prisoners who were released from prison. The monument was built in 1973 (one year before the Turkish invasion of the island) after the EOKA fighters, who fought for the liberation of Cyprus from British colonization, were released from prison in 1959. The sculptor made 14 statues portraying two armed men raising the bars to release the men, women, children, Orthodox priests from prison as a tomb. On the white marble podium, as it flying above the basement, is a Greek goddess.
