Showcase: 'Libreria Acqua Alta'
Opening a bookshop in a city where the roads are made of water sounds like a crazy idea. But there’s one man who’s able to make it work. Miranda Atty went to Venice to visit Luigi Frizzo, who has a rather special way of keeping his books dry.

Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice Italy || A Floating Bookshop
The Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice, Italy is one of the most beautiful and interesting bookshops in the world, designed to literally float during the times the city of Venice floods. Books are stacked in gondolas, bathtubs, and sinks to keep them safe from water damage.
And that's not all! Water damaged books from days of yore are used to build stairs, walls, and other creations. You can climb these books, using them as lookout posts! This is the craziest bookshop but so fun! Join Marti and her friends as they explore Libreria Acqua Alta and share it with you.

Venezia, allagata storica libreria Acqua alta.
. .di Valentina Ruggiu
How this Venice bookshop protects its books from flooding
Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop in Venice stacks his books in boats to protect them from getting ruined during high tide.
Books are piled on boats, bathtubs, and whatever can float. There is a giant gondola welcoming visitors at the entrance of the shop, and also a staircase made of old books opening onto a small canal.
Acqua Alta is also used to describe Venice’s frequent flooding, and that is where the name of the shop comes from. Its owner, Luigi Frizzo, opened it in 2004 after travelling the world. It took him two years to collect most of the books displayed, which is why he is so keen to keep them protected.
High waters once caused €200,000 worth of damage to books. The bookshop stays open during high tide but sometimes it still has problems with flooding.
This is especially because of the weather service, Mr Frizzo told Business Insider. Sometimes they forecast 1.10m of water, but eventually water is 1.50m or 1.60m high. So you get ready for 1.10m, but it’s not enough. Especially if it comes early in the morning or at night.
There are over 100,000 books in the shop coming from all over the world. Most of them are secondhand and some are worth hundreds of euros, like the books about Venice which cost over €500.

Venice, Libreria Acqua Alta - Italy 4K Travel Channel
The Libreria Acqua Alta, which means high water bookshop, is in the center of Venice, in Calle Longa S. Maria Formosa 5176/b.
We enter the bookshop and stand amidst a myriad of books in shelves that reach to the ceiling. In the middle of the room is a Venetian gondola, which is also full of books. In an adjoining room, we see books stacked in bathtubs and another boat.
In front of an open gate, leading out onto a canal stands a bench. It serves as a reading corner. The gate is only secured with a crossbeam.
Lino gives us the permission to film. He is very nice and friendly and tells us more about the bookshop, while he also serves other customers. His father Frizzo Luigi own this and two other bookstores.
We ask Lino how the bookshop got its name and why the books are stored in boats and bathtubs. Name-giving was the high water of February 2008. At that time the water in the bookshop was knee-deep and the facilities partly covered with ice and snow.
It destroyed innumerable books. Lino showed us some photos of this incident. Thus many books are stored in boats and bathtubs today and thus better protected.
We visit another part in the back area. A terrace is bordered and protected by a high wall. Over stacks of books damaged by the high water, you can climb on the top of the wall and take a look inside the canal. Now it is also clear why a gate of the shop leads to the canal. It is the emergency exit. A lifeboat is tied in front.
In another side room, we see innumerable books damaged by the high water.
In the Libreria Acqua Alta, one sells used and new books in different languages. We would have liked to buy a book about Marco Polo, but unfortunately, the German edition was out of print.
Across the alley, in Calle Longa S. Maria Formosa 5181, you can stay in the Bed and Breakfast of Luigi Frizzo, the owner. The phone number can be found on our blog.

Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Libreria Acqua Alta
Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Libreria Acqua Alta
Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop is a mix between a flea market and a serious library. It’s a definite must for book lovers (without dust allergies I might add). It’s spread out through various rambling rooms; one room with a gondola stacked with books, other rooms are packed with rowing boats & bath tubs full of old second hand atlases, dictionaries, art books, biographies and history books. There’s something for every one, you just have to look long enough. In the back room you can look out to one of the channels, which makes this place even more special.
The bookshop is called Libreria Acqua Alta, which literally means “library of high water” … And if you know Venice, you also know that Acqua Alta happens every year and if this is the case, the bookshop is completely flooded. But, all books are safe because the gondola simply floats.
A visit to this bookshop when in Venice is almost compulsory, because it’s clearly one of the most interesting ones you’ll ever come across. The owner also has some cats that frequently roam through the books and love to be patted.
( Venice - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Venice . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Venice - Italy
