Why London taxi is black? (History of Black Cab)
History of London Cab - from Hackney carriages in 1600s to electric taxis of 2018.
Did you know that taxi drivers in London have to pass a test, which includes memorising 25 000 streets and 20 000 landmarks, and takes up to 4 years to prepare to?
Today we’ll talk about one of the most recognised symbols of London - the famous Black cab.
Even if you’ve never been to London, you definitely have seen one; London cab can be seen in thousands of movies and millions of news reports and photographs. Officially known as Hackney carriages, cabs for hire started being used on the streets of London in 1600s. According to the most common version, they got their name from the French word hacquenée, which stood for a small horse for hire.
Hackneys were compact one-horse carriages on two wheels, small and mobile enough to navigate through busy narrow streets. By mid-1700s there were over a thousand licensed taxis coursing across the town, and Londoners called them hackney hell-carts for their misbehaved drivers and often bad quality of the carriages themselves.
In the early 1900s the first motorised taxis were introduced, but the classic model line of London cabs started from Austin FX3. It had the characteristic silhouette and the orange roof sign. This model is the reason why today’s trademark color of a classic London taxi is black. The manufacturer of this model was producing it in black by default, and buyers had to pay extra for special colors. Since the car was being purchased by fleet owners in batches, nobody wanted to invest extra into something unessential like color, so the majority of FX3s were standard factory black. These days London cabs can come in any sorts of colors and liveries, but they are still referred to as black cabs.
Several models were introduced during the last decades, including the experimental Metrocab, that can still be seen around London, but didn’t prove to be as popular and enduring as the FX3 and FX4 models.
The current incarnation of the Hackney Carriage is Austin TX4; it’s a 4-door saloon car produced in Coventry, and although the majority of them go straight to London, some are being used in other big cities of the UK or are being shipped abroad. That’s right - although nearly everyone knows this car as London cab, TX4s are being used as taxis in several other big cities around the world, including Cairo, Riyadh, Las Vegas and others. On rare occasions they are being used as private cars, for example, the actor and comedian Stephen Fry owns a TX4 and uses it as his personal car.
Design is not the only quality London taxis are unique with; becoming a cabbie is highly difficult, and in order to acquire a taxi license the driver needs to pass The Knowledge; it’s a special test that requires memorising over 25 000 streets and 20 000 landmarks. And not just the names and locations; the examiner can name you random A and B points in London, and the applicant has to say what is the most optimal way of getting from A to B, by memory, without even seeing the map.
Preparing to this test takes 2-4 years, and the majority still fail. Those who pass it, get to call themselves butterboys. And they usually never use GPS navigators or a map while driving. By the way, if you are lucky enough to be the first ever passenger of a freshly-licensed butterboy, you’ll get a free ride, that’s the tradition.
But back to the iconic design of the cab; starting from 2017 TX4 is no longer being produced, and the look of the car that’s been around since early 90-s, is going to be changed very soon with the new model - TX5.
Which model do you prefer personally? Do you think TX5 is a worthy update to the legendary look of the London taxi?
Tenth of London black taxis electrified
(31 Jul 2019) LEAD IN:
A tenth of London's famous black taxis are now electrified, following the launch of a new battery-powered taxicab by Geely-owned LEVC last year.
But drivers claim there's still a lack of infrastructure to support the new vehicles, particularly charging points across the capital.
STORY-LINE:
Peter Powell has driven black taxis on London's streets for over 23 years.
He's now one of over 2,000 London taxi drivers to have switched their traditional diesel cab for a more environmentally friendly alternative.
The TX taxi by London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), a brand owned by China-based Geely, which also owns Volvo Cars, was launched in January last year.
Its battery-powered engine can run for to up to 80 miles/129 kilometres in full-electric mode.
It's also fitted with a small, petrol range extender that allows it to go up to 370 miles/595 kilometres.
The old diesel cabs, they served the trade quite well, but very antiquated, unreliable, uncomfortable, extremely expensive to run. So hot inside, it's unbelievable, says Powell.
You can actually near enough taste the fumes some days. This is the complete opposite.
But Powell says he often struggles to find a free charging point across the capital. He usually charges his vehicle at home and uses its petrol range extender if needs be.
When you don't find a charger, you can't get on them. There's taxis waiting, there's other normal vehicles waiting, says Powell.
LEVC announced Wednesday (31 July) it had produced its 2,500th TX taxicab at its plant in Coventry.
According to Transport for London (TFL) data, there were around 21,000 black taxi cabs on the British capital's streets last year.
That means the TX makes up around ten percent of that. Not all 2,500 TX taxis are being driven in London. It's operating in over 20 cities across the UK.
What we see at the moment, we see an increased momentum and we believe sales will speed up quite significantly, very soon even, says Joerg Hoffman, the CEO of LEVC.
LEVC claims the 2,500 new taxis have prevented about 6,800 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
They've also reduced NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions, a major contributor to poor air quality, by 99.5 percent in comparison to the previous diesel taxi.
Taxi emissions contribute about 30 percent of NOx pollution in London, says Shirley Rodrigues, deputy London mayor for Environment and Energy.
So, very significant. And that's because we've been increasingly cleaning up London's bus fleet and cleaning up London's vehicle fleets of vans, coaches, lorries and so on. So, we have to tackle taxis as well as everything else.
According to estimates by the Mayor of London's office, the number of electric vehicles on the city's streets could grow from around 20,000 currently to over 330,000 by 2025.
That would require around 50,000 charge points.
The mayor's office says London currently hosts 2,400 public chargers across the capital, 25 percent of all the UK's electric vehicle charge points.
So, we created the biggest network, bigger than New York and Paris, of rapid charges, standard charges and residential charges, says Rodrigues.
So, we have over 185 charges, rapids, on the street now. Half of those, roughly half, are about dedicated to taxis alone as well as lamp posts charges, over a thousand, two thousand if you count the private sector ones as well. So, there's a very big network, lots of capacity.

The press and media tends to attract criticism for their coverage of the taxi, minicab/private hire and chauffeur industry because of misleading information, specifically the confusions between taxis and private hire.
However, this episode of Fake Britain has to be commended for being informative about the dangers of using unlicensed private hire/minicab services.

Traditional London taxis are turning heads in the western city of Pune.
They're the latest marketing tool by a real estate agents which is promising customers the ultimate in luxury and style.
STORYLINE:
No, this isn't Piccadilly Circus. It isn't even London. This is Pune, in western India.
It's no wonder this traditional London cab is turning heads.
But the London taxi isn't lost, it's one of ten imported by an estate agent to offer its clients the taste of western luxury.
And on Pune's chaotic streets the London cab has already become something of a local celebrity.
Wherever it parks the taxi is surrounded by curious onlookers and motorcyclists, some beeping their horns as they ride past.
The taxi belongs to Panchshil Realty, a leading local estate agent and construction company.
These robust hand-built vehicles are designed to be driven for hundreds of thousands of miles and should be able to withstand the challenges posed by Indian roads.
And the company's first customers are similarly impressed.

Calling All Cars: A Child Shall Lead Them / Weather Clear Track Fast / Day Stakeout
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California.
The LAPD has been copiously fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racial animosity, police brutality and police corruption.
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
