LICHTENSTEIN CASTLE | GERMANY
At this moment the surrounding hills and valleys, all filled with trees, turns a beautiful orange and yellow as the leaves begin to change.
Lichtenstein Castle (Schloss Lichtenstein) is not famous outside of Germany. But in Baden-Württemberg, it’s known as the fairytale castle. It is located at the edge of the Swabian Alps, 817 metres above sea level.
This castle is the smallest castle I’ve been to in Germany. It’s even smaller than King Ludwig’s Linderhof Castle.
The name Lichtenstein is German for light coloured stone on which the castle is built on. This beautiful castle built in the 19th century and was inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s novel “Lichtenstein” Count Wilhelm of Württemberg had it built in 1840-42. The site around the neo-Gothic castle is composed of other buildings from the 19th century, a chapel, an ample garden and the romantic courtyard.
The origins of Schloss Lichtenstein date back to 1100 when the castle belonged to the lords of Liechtenstein. The original castle was destroyed twice between then and around 1400, where it was rebuilt on a site nearby the current location. The castle belonged to the Lichtenstein family until 1687 when the last member of the line died. In 1802, King Frederick I came into possession of the then out of commission castle and rebuilt it into a hunting lodge.
The current castle that exists today was built by King Frederick’s cousin, Wilhelm von Urach. Like many wealthy folks of the time, Wilhelm purchased the property from the king in 1837 to restore to its medieval glory. The castle was finished in 1842 and even the king attended the ceremony. Lichtenstein Castle was damaged in WWII, but reconstruction began immediately after the war. The castle is still owned by the dukes of Urach.

German Castles: Lichtenstein and Hohenzollern Castle
I tried to get into Lichtenstein Castle, I failed. So, I went to Hohenzollern Castle and missed the light.
It was one of those days that everything just did not go as planned. But, any day in travel photography is a good day.
I left my apartment in Freiburg at 3 in the morning with the intention to do go Lichenstein Castle to photograph the beautiful spot in Germany for sunrise. Unfortunately, when I got to the castle I realized that you actually can't photograph the castle from outside the walls. So, my morning was kind of ruined. I actually did wander around looking to see if there was a way for me to sneak into Lichenstein Castle and get that classic image, but I couldn't.
So, realizing that it wasn't going to happen, but not wanting my morning to be a complete bust, I decided to push on to Burg Hohenzollern Castle. I had seen pictures of this castle on social media, but really had no idea where it was or where the images were taken from. Eventually, I found a post saying that the Hohenzollern Castle viewpoint was called Zellerhorn. So, I headed that way. On my walk out to the view point, I ran into a couple photographers who were leaving. They said the light popped off and it was incredible. Heartbreaking.
But, regardless, the view of Hohenzollern Castle was incredible, even if the best light of the day was gone. And, even though the light wasn't perfect, I think I got some nice pictures of the castle.
Obviously, I would have loved to do my photography of Hohenzollern Castle about an hour earlier, but it was still nice to see the castle and take in the views.
After my morning search for castles, I headed back to Freiburg to enjoy a last day in what has become my favourite city in Germany. Unfortunately, it rained all day. Still, I am loving this part of Germany, and already looking forward to coming back some day soon.
