Pontypridd is both a community and the county town of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, and is situated 12 miles north of the Welsh capital city of Cardiff. Pontypridd is often abbreviated to Ponty by local residents.
Pontypridd comprises the electoral wards of Cilfynydd, Glyncoch, Graig, Hawthorn, Pontypridd Town, 'Rhondda', Rhydyfelin Central/Ilan (Rhydfelen), Trallwng (Trallwn) and Treforest (Trefforest), and falls within the Welsh Assembly and UK parliamentary constituency by the same name.
Pontypridd lies alongside the dual carriageway north-south A470, between Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfil. The A4054, running north and south of the town, was the former main road, and, like the A470, follows the Taff Valley. South of the town of Pontypridd is the A473, for Llantrisant and Pencoed. To the west is the A4058, which follows the River Rhondda to Porth and the Rhondda Valley beyond.
Pontypridd is noted for its Old Bridge, a stone construction across the River Taff built in 1756 by William Edwards. The history of Pontypridd is closely tied to the coal and iron industries; prior to the developments of these, Pontypridd was largely a rural backwater comprising a few farmsteads, with Treforest initially becoming the main urban settlement in the area.
Pontypridd community comprises the town centre itself, as well as the following key villages/settlements:
Cilfynydd
Coedpenmaen (Coed-Pen-Maen)
Glyntaff (Glyn-Taff)
Glyncoch
Graig
Graigwen & Pantygraigwen
Hawthorn (Y Ddraenen-Wen)
Hopkinstown (Trehopcyn)
Maesycoed (Maes-y-Coed)
Pontsionnorton (Pont Sion Norton)
Pwllgwaun
Rhydyfelin (Rhydfelen)
Trallwn (Trallwng)
Treforest (Trefforest)
Upper Boat (Glan-Bad)
Pontypridd also serves as the postal town for the community of Llantwit Fardre under the CF38 postcode district, although this area is not considered part of Pontypridd.
Pontypridd came into being because of transport, as it was on the drovers' route from the south Wales coast and the Bristol Channel, to Merthyr, and onwards into the hills of Brecon. Although initial expansion in the valleys occurred at Treforest due to the slower speed of the River Taff at that point, the establishment of better bridge building meant a natural flow of power to Pontypridd.

Tour of Pontypridd circa 1990
Video filmed in and around Pontypridd in about 1990 before the relief road was constructed. Includes how the Broadway once was. Also includes overlooking the town from the common and also overlooking Hawthorn, Rhydyfelin and Treforest.
I've removed the audio owing to it was just roadnoise (from driving in the car) and me and my dad's commentary of things - which doesn't make for brilliant listening!

My name is Frederick Hall Thomas, or better known as Freddie Welsh. I was born here in Pontypridd and decided to emigrate to North America with my friends when we were teenagers.
I was nineteen, wondering around and looking for work on the railroad, but there was no money in it. It was cold and snowy, and I walked all day and couldn't get a job or a meal. So one night I was standing at the lunch counter when my friends came in. Billy Elmer said I'll give you 5$ if you fight tonight! I was too hungry to stand it any longer.
Five dollars meant a thick steak and some browned potatoes and a piece of pie anda a cup of real coffee. I stood there and thought with my mouth watering. If my mother had known what I was thinking of doing, she wouldn't have approved. My parents didn't send me to a boarding school to become a fighter. But I still went upstairs and won my fight.
So I began boxing professionally, started training again and kept winning. In 1907 though, my mother was ill, so I went back home. I didn't stop boxing, however. But I wasn't known here, in Britain and had to prove myself once again. I fought 3 matches in one night and won them all. I was dedicated to win. When the time came to leave for America again, I was moved when the people cheered and sang to me Farewell, my true love at the station.
I lived in gyms and trained hard. I looked after my body, read Ibsen and ate my vegetables to keep my mind strong. I spent my time in the nature and jogged on the Porthcawl beach.
My hard work finally paid off in 1909 when I earned the British Lightweight title after beating Johnny Summers at the National Sporting Club in Covent Garden.
Then in 1910 I beat Jim Driscoll, the best featherweight boxer in Wales. I kept him going till the 10th round and wore him out. He then headbutted me and got disqualified, resulting in me winning the match.
In 1914 I fought against Willie Ritchie, the World Lightweight Champion. He couldn't knock me out either and thus I took home his title.
I died in 1927 in New York City with an official record of over 160 fights, of which I had only lost 5, earning me the nickname of the Welsh Wizard.
