Places to see in ( Trier - Germany ) Liebfrauenkirche
The Liebfrauenkirche (German for Church of Our Lady) in Trier, is, along with the Cathedral of Magdeburg (reportedly begun in 1209, but finished after the Liebfrauenkirche) the earliest Gothic church in Germany and falls into the architectural tradition of the French Gothic cathedrals. It is located next to the Trier Dom. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Roman double church originally stood here. The southern portion was torn down around 1200 and completely replaced by the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauen). The exact date of the start of construction can no longer be determined, however a painted inscription inside on a column in the church reads: The construction of this church was started in 1227 and ended in 1243 (German: Der bau dieser Kirche ward angefangen im Jahr 1227 und geendigt im Jahr 1243) however, it is currently thought construction began in 1230 by Archbishop of Trier Theodoric II (also called Dietrich von Wied or Theoderich von Wied).
Around 1260, the building was probably finished. In 1492, a high peak was placed on the central tower, which was named because of its high technology and degree of craftsmanship perfection. The high peak can be seen on the city dating, but was destroyed in a storm on Heimsuchungstag (July 2) in 1631. Subsequently a hipped roof emplaced, which was destroyed in the Second World War. It was first replaced in 1945 by a roof and then by a steeper one in 2003. On July 13, 1951, the Pope designated the church a Minor Basilica, and in 1986 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A special feature of the basilica is its atypical cruciform floor plan as a round church, whose cross-shaped vaulting with four corresponding portals in rounded niches is completed by eight rounded altar niches so that the floor plan resembles a twelve-petaled rose, a symbol of the Virgin Mary, the rosa mystica, and reminiscent of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles. The apostles as well as the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed are painted on the twelve supporting columns, completely visible only from one spot marked by a black stone.

Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Trier, Germany
This building is notable because it was completed before 1300. For a building so old, it is in remarkable shape. Many people consider it far more beautiful than the Romanesque Cathedral next door even though it is a minor basilica in the Roman Catholic hierachy. The date of this video is 7/27/19 and we are in a Viking Cruises tour group. Such a situation is not unusual in Europe. In Barcelona, Spain, the Gaudi designed Sagrada Familia basilica is way, way larger and more impressive than the Cathedral of Barcelona where the Archbishop sits, which is a lovely structure but just not nearly as impressive as La Sagrada.
Germany: The City of Trier
Trier is a city in Germany on the banks of the river Moselle. It is the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BC.
Trier is well known for its well preserved Roman and medieval buildings.
This video shows:
- The Porta Nigra, the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps;
For details see my video: The porta Nigra in Trier
- The huge Constantine Basilica, a basilica in the original Roman sense, was the 67 m (219.82 ft) long. Throne hall of Roman Emperor Constantine; it is today used as a Protestant church.
- The Trier Cathedral (German: Trierer Dom or Dom St. Peter), a Roman Catholic church which dates back to Roman times and is home to the Holy Tunic, a garment with a recorded history back to the 12th century, in Catholic tradition said to be the robe Jesus was wearing when he died. It is only exhibited every few decades, at irregular intervals. This year 2012 you can see it.
- The Liebfrauenkirche (German for Church of Our Lady), which is one of the most important early Gothic cathedrals in Germany and falls into the architectural tradition of the French Gothic cathedrals;
- The 2nd century AD Roman bridge (Römerbrücke) across the Moselle, the oldest bridge north of the Alps still crossed by traffic;
- St. Gangolf Church was the city's market church that rivalled the Archbishop's Trier Cathedral.
- Two old treadwheel cranes, one being the Gothic Old Crane (Alte Krahnen) or Trier Moselle Crane (Trierer Moselkrahn) from 1413, and the other the 1774 Baroque crane called the (Old) Customs Crane ((Alter) Zollkran) or Younger Moselle Crane (Jüngerer Moselkran) (see List of historical harbour cranes)

The Lemonicks in Trier - Germany 4K Travel Channel
It was a great pleasure for us to spend some time with the Lemonicks in Trier. The Lemonicks, these are Nisha and Vasu, a charming couple from Mumbai, India. Just like us, they love to travel, to collect many beautiful memories. Nisha is a famous Indian travel blogger. In the meantime, Vasu, an avid photographer, has ended its corporate career and joined her. We met them the first time in Bangkok. When we heard that they will be in Europe the next months, we invited them to visit Ursula's hometown, Trier. We were very pleased that they found the time during their stay in Frankfurt.
Trier is the oldest town in Germany and looks back at a more than 2000-year story. The Romans have left remarkable traces in this town, especially after Constantine the Great moved his seat of government there.
We begin our tour on the Petrisberg, from where you have a wonderful panorama view of the city.
Particularly the Cathedral of Trier and Constantine Basilica, Constantine's former throne room, stand out. One also sees the Porta Nigra, the former city gate, the Trier Imperial Baths as well as the Roman amphitheater. All these buildings are on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.
In southern direction is the Abby St. Matthias. It is said to be the burial place of the apostle Matthias.
After the first look, we go to the center of the city, but at the Main Market, it starts to rain. So we decide to make a tour of the churches of Trier.
We start in the Cathedral of Trier, which houses the Seamless Robe of Jesus and continue to the Church of Our Lady. As it is still raining, we got to the Constantine Basilica. The impressive interior is 27.2 m wide, 33 m high and 67 m long, with the entrance hall even 75. It is the largest still existing single room of the ancient world. Today, the Constantine Basilica serves as an evangelical church. In 2014, one provided the church with a new organ with 82 registers, over 6,000 pipes.

Trier (German pronunciation: [ˈtʀiːɐ̯] ( listen); French: Trèves, IPA: [tʁɛv]; Luxembourgish: Tréier; Italian: Treviri; Latin: Augusta Treverorum; the Latin adjective associated with the city is Treverensis), historically called Treves in English, is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle. It may be the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BC (contested with Worms and Cologne).[2]
Trier lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of ruddy sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Mosel wine region.
The city is the oldest seat of a Christian bishop north of the Alps. In the Middle Ages, the Archbishop of Trier was an important prince of the church, as the Archbishopric of Trier controlled land from the French border to the Rhine. The Archbishop also had great significance as one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire.
With an approximate population of 105,000 Trier is ranked fourth among the state's largest cities; after Mainz, Ludwigshafen, and Koblenz.[3] The nearest large cities in Germany are Saarbrücken, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast, and Koblenz, about 100 km (62 mi) northeast. The closest city to Trier is the capital of Luxembourg, some 50 km (31 mi) to the southwest.
Trier is home to the University of Trier, the administration of the Trier-Saarburg district and the seat of the ADD (Aufsichts- und Dienstleistungsdirektion), which until 1999 was the borough authority of Trier, and the Academy of European Law (ERA). It is one of the five central places of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Along with Luxembourg, Metz and Saarbrücken, fellow constituent members of the QuattroPole union of cities, it also forms a central place of the greater region encompassing Saar-Lor-Lux (Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg), Rhineland-Palatinate, and Wallonia.

Trier: St Peter Cathedral and Liebfrauekirche
Two of the most magnificent pieces of architecture were undoubtedly the Trier Dom (St Peter Cathedral) and Liebfrauenkirche. The first, sections of which are dated to 300AD is oldest, whilst the latter is the first Gothic church constructed in Germany, and one of the many sites within Trier designated UNESCO World heritage.

City Skyliner in Trier - Germany 4K Travel Channel
From 30 August to 27 October 2019, the City Skyliner was an attraction in Trier. It is currently the highest mobile observation tower in the world. The City Skyliner is a gyro tower with a cabin rotating up and down around a supporting mast. It can transport up to 60 passengers per trip to a height of 72 m.
From the above, you have a unique panoramic view of the city. Furthermore, the visitor is informed acoustically about the sights of the city during the journey.
The access is barrier-free, and the cabin fully air-conditioned with comfortable seating. Although the City Skyliner weighs 270 tons and is a heavyweight, it takes up very little space so that it could be placed directly next to the Basilica of Constantine.
Thus, we have a unique view across the former throne room of the Roman Emperor.
The Trier Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) were visible. The Porta Nigra appeared between the towers. In the south, we recognized the Palace Garden and the Trier Imperial Baths.
At the foot of the Skyliner lie the city center, the Basilica of Constantine, the Electoral Palace, and the Rheinische Landesmuseum.
Behind the cash desk, you could buy drinks at the Skyliner Bar.
The trip lasted 7 minutes and cost € 7.00 (children up to 10 years € 4.00).
