Despite the name, Frankfurt Hahn Airport (Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn) is situated approximately 120 km (75 mi) from the city in Lautzenhausen (Rhineland-Palatinate). Hahn Airport is a major base for low-cost carrier Ryanair. Frankfurt is a traffic hub for the German motorway (Autobahn) system. The Frankfurter Kreuz is an Autobahn interchange close to the airport, where the Bundesautobahn 3 (A3), Cologne to Würzburg, and the Bundesautobahn 5 (A5), Basel to Hannover, meet. Frankfurt Central Station (Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, often abbreviated as Frankfurt (Main) Hbf or F-Hbf) is the largest railway station in Germany by railway traffic.

Glinting with glass, steel and concrete skyscrapers, Frankfurt-on-the-Main (pronounced ‘mine’) is unlike any other German city. The focal point of a conurbation of 5.5 million inhabitants, ‘Mainhattan’ is a high-powered finance and business hub, home to one of the world’s largest stock exchanges and the gleaming headquarters of the European Central Bank, and famously hosts some of the world's most important trade fairs, attracting thousands of business travellers.
Yet at its heart, Frankfurt is an unexpectedly traditional and charming city, with half-timbered buildings huddled in its quaint medieval Altstadt (old town), cosy apple-wine taverns serving hearty regional food, village-like neighbourhoods filled with outdoor cafes, boutiques and street art, and beautiful parks, gardens and riverside paths. The city's cache of museums is second in Germany only to Berlin’s, and its nightlife and entertainment scenes are bolstered by a spirited student population.

Goethe House
Was the family residence of the Goethe family, most notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, until 1795. Was destroyed during the Allied bombing of Frankfurt on May 22, 1944, but was restored after the war between 1947 and 1951, as closely as possible to its original condition.
Römer
A medieval building in the Altstadt. One of the city's most important landmarks. Is located opposite the Old St. Nicholas church and has been the city hall (Rathaus) of Frankfurt for over 600 years.
Frankfurt Zoological Garden
The second oldest Zoo in Germany. Was founded in 1858 by citizens of Frankfurt. Features over 4,500 animals of more than 450 species on more than 13 hectares. Lies in the eastern part of the Innenstadt (inner city).
Frankfurt Cathedral
A Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of the city. Dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. From 1356 onwards, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were elected in this collegiate church as kings in Germany, and from 1562 to 1792, emperors-elect were crowned here.
Palmengarten
One of two botanical gardens in Frankfurt am Main. The largest garden of its kind in Germany. Located in the Westend-Süd district. The exhibits are organized according to origin in free-air or climatized greenhouses. Contain numerous tropical and subtropical plants.
Liebieghaus
A late 19th-century villa. Contains a sculpture museum. Was built in 1896, in a palatial, Historicist style, as a retirement home for the Bohemian textile manufacturer Baron Heinrich von Liebieg. The museum includes ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian sculpture.
Grüneburgpark
A park in the Westend district. The name derives from the Green castle, which stood on the site in the 14th century. A popular place for recreation among the Frankfurters, especially in the summer months.
Europaturm
A 337.5 metre (1,107.3 ft) high telecommunications tower. The top of the tower can turn and provides a panoramic view of the Rhine Main area. The upper part of the structure housed a restaurant and discothèque, but since 1999, the Europaturm has been closed to the public.
Hessenpark
An open air museum in Neu-Anspach. Was founded in 1974 by the Hesse State Government. Showcases half-timbered buildings from the land of Hesse. As of 2006, there were almost 100 houses on display. A popular family destination.
Naturmuseum Senckenberg
The second largest museum of natural history in Germany. Boasts the largest exhibition of large dinosaurs in Europe. One particular treasure is a dinosaur fossil with unique, preserved scaled skin. Contains the world's largest and most diverse collection of stuffed birds.

Almost one in three of the people living in Frankfurt do not hold a German passport. No matter where visitors come from, they will always meet people in Frankfurt who speak their language and a restaurant that serves their favourite food. The open and hospitable atmosphere in Frankfurt stems from its centuries-old role as a trading centre. This liberal and democratic tradition of the city may be one reason for the fact that people from very diverse cultures have lived here in peace with one another for a long time. They have all contributed to making this city shine slightly differently from every angle, like a jewel shines slightly differently when you look at it from different sides.
This starts with the city’s architecture. The view of Frankfurt’s bold high-rise architecture is just as attractive and yet very different. Glinting with glass, steel and concrete skyscrapers, Frankfurt-on-the-Main (pronounced ‘mine’) is unlike any other German city. The focal point of a conurbation of 5.5 million inhabitants, ‘Mainhattan’ is a high-powered finance and business hub, home to one of the world’s largest stock exchanges and the gleaming headquarters of the European Central Bank, and famously hosts some of the world's most important trade fairs, attracting thousands of business travellers.
Yet at its heart, Frankfurt is an unexpectedly traditional and charming city, with half-timbered buildings huddled in its quaint medieval Altstadt (old town), cosy apple-wine taverns serving hearty regional food, village-like neighbourhoods filled with outdoor cafes, boutiques and street art, and beautiful parks, gardens and riverside paths. The city's cache of museums is second in Germany only to Berlin’s, and its nightlife and entertainment scenes are bolstered by a spirited student population.
Frankfurt has long been a key stopping point for river, rail, and road traffic from Switzerland and southern Germany northward along the Rhine River to the Ruhr region and across the Main River to north-central Germany. It is still the chief traffic hub for western Germany and has also been an important inland shipping port since the canalization of the Main in the 1880s. Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany and one of the busiest in Europe.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt (1914) is among the largest institutions of higher education in Germany. The Frankfurt am Main City Zoological Garden is one of the country’s finest zoos. Among the city’s other attractions are the Städel Art Institute and Municipal Gallery, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, and the Liebieghaus Museum of Sculpture. The birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was burned to the ground in World War II but was later restored. Adjoining it is the Goethe Museum and Library.
International trade fairs have been held in Frankfurt since 1240, and the city is now a leading commercial, financial, and high-technology centre. There is an important stock exchange (first established in 1585). The Rothschild family started building its international banking empire in Frankfurt. The city also is the home of the European Union’s central bank. Annual book, automobile, and computer fairs are popular events, and there are many other fairs held throughout the year. Manufactures include automobiles, machinery, chemical and pharmaceutical products, printing materials, and foodstuffs. The city is traditionally known for its production of high-quality sausages (frankfurters).
