BEAUTIFUL SCENES AS MARGARET KENYATTA & BOTSWANA FIRST LADY VISIT NAZARETH HOSPITAL IN KIAMBU!
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta today took her visiting Botswana counterpart Mrs Neo Jane Masisi on a tour of Nazereth Mission Hospital in Kiambu County during which they visited the facility's youth and adolescent unit commonly known as the Holy Family Centre.
The Holy Family Centre takes care of the youth and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS and is considered one of the best care centres in the country.
Speaking after an extensive tour of the facility led by the hospital administrator Sister Francisca Alphonse, First Lady Neo Masisi said she was impressed by the quality and range of services offered at the facility, and encouraged the beneficiaries to remain focused on achieving their life goals.
The Botswana First Lady said millions of youth in Africa face similar challenges adding that her home country is similarly challenged by a growing population of young people and adolescents affected by the HIV/AIDS scourge.
Botswana has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in Africa estimated at over 24 percent among people aged between 15 and 49 years. Kenya's HIV/AIDS prevalence is estimated at 4.8 percent.
Among the unique services offered at the facility for those infected by the virus is a youth peer counseling and support program which offer psychosocial support.
Other services offered at the facility include clinical testing for the HIV virus, antiretroviral drugs therapy and nutritional support.
The centre, which was established in 2011, also offer income generating activities and run a comprehensive children and youth recreation program.
“I find it fascinating that what is happening in Kenya is happening in Botswana. I am impressed that the youth are getting fully involved,” said First Lady Neo Masisi.
The Botswana First Lady said she will initiate a similar program in her home country adding that in her new role as a UNAIDS special ambassador, she will advocate for similar interventions across Africa.
It is one thing for someone to ask for something but another to demonstrate. One thing I am going to advocate is this kind of youth programme to be replicated in my country,” Mrs Masisi said.
The Botswana First Lady is accompanying her spouse President Mokgweetsi Masisi who is on a three-day state visit to Kenya.

MASAI VILLAGE VISIT by Natural World Kenya Safaris
MEET A SPECIAL PEOPLE – A VISIT TO A MASAI VILLAGE
You’ve seen pictures of them – adorned with the brilliant red, blue and purple patterns of the shukas they wear. The men with their spears, tall and proud. The women bejeweled with bright beaded earrings and scarves. These are the some of the oldest inhabitants of East Africa, the Maasai people.
They live in small mud-thatched villages, surrounded by their cattle and smaller livestock. For hundreds of years the Masai have roamed these lands of Kenya and Tanzania, living a free, nomadic lifestyle. Their traditional lands now comprise much of Kenya’s national parks.
A highlight of your safari vacation is a visit with these Maasai people. Many of the tribes welcome visitors to their villages to view up close their culture and lifestyle.
Arriving at the Village – An Explosion of Colour
The first thing you’ll notice as you enter a village is the many vivid colours of the Masai’s garments. The bright shukas or sheets they wear contrast strongly with the greens and browns of the landscape.
Adding to this display of colour is the brightly beaded jewelry – necklaces, bracelets and amulets – worn by the women and men.
This beadwork, while very appealing, has more than just an ornamental value. The women who create it express their identity and social status with these handcrafted pieces.
You’ll see displays of this beaded jewelry for sale, and you can help support the village with a purchase… as well as bringing home an authentic souvenir from your travels.
Music and Dance
You may get to experience the villagers singing and dancing… and you might even be able to join in! The Maasai are known for their rhythmic call-and-response singing. Perhaps their most widely known dance is the adumu or “jumping dance”.
The warriors form a circle with one person entering the center. This dancer will jump higher and higher to the rhythms of the singers. As he jumps higher the singers will raise the pitch of their voices.
Sometimes guests are invited into the circle, adding to the dancing fun!
The Boma
Standing in muted contrast to the colourful villagers, you’ll see the browns and grays of the Maasai’s houses, called bomas. Small structures with thatched roofs, it is the job of the Maasai women to build these sturdy dwellings.
The women begin with a framework of timber poles and interweave smaller branches to form a structure. This is then covered with a mixture of mud, grass, cow dung, urine and ash. The entire structure is no more than 3 x 5 m in area and stands only 1.5 m tall.
Yet the family cooks, eats, sleeps and socialises in this modest structure – even sharing space with small livestock! You may be able to peek inside to experience a very different lifestyle.
The men also participate in constructing this homestead. It is their responsibility to build the protective fencing around the village to keep lions and other predators away from the livestock.
We’ll Be Your Guide
We’ll provide you with opportunities to enjoy a visit to a Masai Village. On your Natural World Safari to the Masai Mara Reserve or Amboseli National Park, you can partake of this optional excursion. The cost is only $20 and payable to the village chief. Just ask your driver/guide who will make all the arrangements.

Helping Hands of Kenya - Weaving
Helping Hands Organization of Kenya is an independent Christian charity that provides opportunities for education and training to disadvantaged adults, youth, and children. Our non-profit organization brings individuals from the local community and outlying areas together for a unique experience. Skillful Hands is based in Naivasha, within the Great Rift Valley region of Kenya, where we provide opportunities for young people to learn a marketable skill. We provide vocational training in weaving, art, and tailoring. Students are taught the importance of good work ethic, such as integrity, punctuality, and the need to produce goods of a high quality.
We also encourage students to grow in their personal and Christian faith by participating in weekly discipleship courses, daily prayer, and reflection.
In addition to the life skills training, we also believe equipping people spiritually is important. As an inclusive center, we hope to break down stereotypes and prejudices to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by individuals with disabilities.
All products are handmade and often use local raw materials. Cotton comes from Mombasa and wool from the nearby Aberdare Mountain region.

Interview with James Kiptoo, expert birding guide in Kenya
Kenya is home to about 1089 species of birds because the right habitats exist for all these birds. Kenya is a flyway where birds from Eastern Europe, as far as Siberia, migrate. In Kenya there are places called IBAs -- Important Bird Areas which are selected for particular endemic species, of which Kenya has quite a number. These areas are found in forest, desert, savannah and the coastal regions.
Lake Magadi in southern Kenya is a breeding haven for water birds and migrants between March and June. This Easter weekend we are sure to see plenty, both wet land and dry land species. Plus enjoy a FREE Nairobi tour including visits to the Giraffe Centre, Elephant Orphanage and Kazuri Beads.
