What was that in the sky over Capri?
Last weekend for three consecutive nights, my husband and I watched a strange bright white ball of light drop down from the sky and hover above the mangroves directly west of our house on Capri.
We first thought it was a light atop a large sailboat mast, but it was far too high up to be that.
Next, we deduced that it might be the headlights of a small airplane, or perhaps a helicopter. Because it was stationary for such a long time, this theory was ruled out.
Furthermore, it was one single light with absolutely no noise coming from it. The object remained in the virtually the same spot for 20 minutes or longer as we finally retired to bed because of the late hour.
Each night, the UFO appeared sometime after 10 p.m., and just sat there, motionless, silent, and in somewhat of a flattened ball of extremely white light. We estimate that it was about 150 feet above the water and always just above the mangroves that flank Capri Pass to the west on Johnson's Bay.
We knew it was not the moon. The moon is always on the east side of the island this time of the year. Furthermore, the first two nights we watched the strange phenomenon, it was raining; the moon and the stars were not visible.
Early on the morning after our third sighting, Fire-Rescue chief Emilio Rodriguez called me from Station 90 to ask me if I had been online and looked at the webcam attached to the Weatherbug at the station.
There is a strange ball of white light that drops down from the sky out of nowhere and then just hovers for a long time, finally dropping out of sight, Rodriguez said. The camera captured something on film last night, March 29, at 10:36 p.m. that is strange, he continued.
Go to the link, weather.weatherbug.com, and click on Marco Island, then Capri, then live camera, then animate, then enlarge and see what you think it is, Rodriguez said.
I immediately shared with the chief what my husband and I had seen on the three previous nights.
I am going to call the Weatherbug main station and see if they can save this footage because it shows this thing clearly dropping in from the sky above, then disappearing out of sight without flying off and this is strange! Rodriguez said.
The camera had been down for several days just prior to this, so the unidentified object was not caught on film prior to the 29th. I clicked on the web camera and was able to save a still-life photograph of the phenomenon.
Word went out to Capriers on the informal e-mail distribution list for the Coconut Telegraph, asking if anyone else had seen this strange light. To date, only one reported seeing anything of this description.
