Russia: 51 terminally ill people cryopreserved in Sergiev Posad facility
Scientists at the KrioRus centre presented their curious premises in Sergiev Posad in Moscow Region, Tuesday, where 51 terminally ill people have been recently frozen in special ice chambers in order to resurrect them after a cure for their diseases has been found. The procedure is called cryopreservation.
SOT, Igor Artyukhov, KrioRus scientific director (Russian): At first there was a small group of six people. We wanted to create the organisation for ourselves and our relatives. We didn't plan to launch a large-scale commercial enterprise, but we had to support this organisation financially, we started to take on other people. People heard about us and started to call us, asking for help for those who were dying. Sure, we didn't refuse anyone.
SOT, Igor Artyukhov, KrioRus scientific director (Russian): After the blood circulation stops, there are a few hours during which the human cells remain alive. Well, some cells can remain alive for a longer period, but human neurons are particularly sensitive, so in two to four hours they start to swell and after that they start to die. This happens in regular temperatures, but if the head of a patient is cooled till 0 degrees Centigrade immediately, these processes slow down ten times and we can talk about tens of hours or even about a few days when some actions can be undertaken.
SOT, Igor Artyukhov, KrioRus scientific director (Russian): These are our cryostats. Two of them operate and one more is being prepared. There are our patients in them. Those who have all their bodies frozen are kept head down, and those who have only their heads frozen are placed in the lower part of cryostat in containers of stainless steel.

Opening Ceremony - 26th Summer Universiade Shenzhen 2011 (CHN)
August 12th, the kick-off of the 26th Summer Universiade took place with the traditional Opening Ceremony. A third Universiade for China, after 2001 (Summer) in Beijing and 2009 (Winter) in Harbin. Therefore, the expectations were high as the Chinese are known to be masters in staging big shows. And once again the hosts did not disappoint. A dazzling and colorful show took place in front of 25,000 spectators giving the green light for 12 days of thrilling sport competitions between student-athletes in 24 sports.
After a pre-ceremony warm-up of with song and dance, it was time for the real thing. A brilliant flash of light illuminates the huge stage in the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre 'Spring Cocoon', to depict an information highway running through the stadium as a vivid symbol of this Universiade, representing the information age.
The national flag of China enters in a sea of flowers and is followed by a marching band of university students. The crowd raises when the flag is hoisted while China's national anthem is played.
1,000 beautiful girls holding flowers flow into a remote mist and gather a piece of a radiant stars river. On the 'Gate of the World', which is 26m high and 125m wide, performers harmoniously move back boards on the giant screen. Numerous drums salute the great era of reform and opening-up; the Chinese calculator, reminds the spectators of the glories of ancient Chinese civilization.
Then the giant screens shows a countdown and when this comes to an end, a giant representing the spirit of the Opening-up and Reform Era opens the 'Gate of the World' for the delegations to enter. Led by beautiful Chinese girls, the athletes walk along 'Youth Avenue'. At the rostrum, they separate in two different directions and get seated in their designated sections.
The three high ranking officials of the Universiade, Mr. Wang Rong, Vice-President of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Yuan Guiren, President of the OC and Mr. Killian, outgoing FISU President deliver their speech from the middle of the arena while surrounded by bright colors. At the end of his speech, Mr. Killian invites the President of China, Mr. Hu Jingtao to declare the Universiade open.
The flying colorful silk and petals, the fireworks on the big screen -- environment friendly - and a meteor shower marks the prelude of a carnival. Using the universal language of music and dance, university students take us to a passionate and energetic world.
Then the FISU flag finally arrives in the stadium. It is hoisted while the FISU anthem, the 'Gaudeamus Igitur' is played and everybody stands. The flag hoisting is followed by the oaths by the representatives of the athletes and referees.
More music is played and everybody is in awe when a violin player is lifted up high in the sky from the main rostrum. Acrobats appear on the stage giving a marvelous performance. Emerged in university campus atmosphere, piled-up books, colorful gene-links and models with knowledge-symbolized fashion clothes display a picture of 'Book Mountain and Knowledge Sea'. The performers wearing baccalaureate gowns on the 'Gate of the World' remind people of their memory of anticipation to campus life.
The bicycle riders appear on the stage depicting the green road, stretching more than 2,000 miles in Shenzhen and Guangdong. And then the torch with the flame arrives. Five different torch bearers run a final lap around the stage. The last torch bearer is joined by four others, while all five of them represent the 5 continents, symbolizing unity. The five run through the 'Gate of the World' up to the five FISU stars and as they lit the stars, highway of fire finally lights the big cauldron with the Universiade flame. Let the Games begin!
It was a great honor for FISU to have the President of China open the Universiade. Besides Mr. Hu Jingtao, seven other heads of state were present at the Opening Ceremony, i.e. the Prime Minister o fHungary, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the President of Sri Lanka, the President of Fiji, the President of Bolivia, the President of Mozambique and the President of Tatarstan. They all met briefly with outgoing President George Killian.

Shrine of Our Lady Life-giving Spring - an Orthodox church decorum Danilov Moscow diocese, was consecrated in honor of the Mother of God Life-giving Source. Built in the XVII century in the style of Elizabethan Baroque. Includes octagon on the quadrangle, dining hall and belfry. Aisles-martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki (northern) and Our Lady of Kazan (south). In 1939 the church was closed. Newly returned to the faithful in 1990. History of Bread House Bazhenov during work on the Empress of 1778 have repeatedly had sought permission to begin construction of Kitchen Corps - he conceived the building was a critical element of the ensemble - but each time received an order to engage in other buildings. Only in the spring of 1784, when all work has been boosted due to the forthcoming visit of the Empress, began the erection of one of the largest structures Tsaritsyn ensemble. Simultaneously with the building of kitchens were built in Tsaritsyn Great Bridge over the ravine, the First and Second Cavalry Corps and several pavilions. July 21 Bazhenov reported in a letter Bezborodko that cellars and glaciers Kitchen housing ready, and he built up to half of the first floor. By May 1785 the building was completed in the rough, there was a temporary roof, interior, frame in terms of window openings. Catherine II was dissatisfied with the work done, the basic, residential palace building she did not like, and in 1786 Bazhenov was removed from all his responsibilities. In the future, supervised the construction of Tsaritsyn Matvei Kazakov. In 1787-88's kitchen cabinet has been completed yet and got a permanent iron roof, but it differed from the original draft. Bazhenov planned a building with a flat roof, kitchens, Kazakov did it with the stingrays - the silhouette of the building has changed somewhat from that
Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

Inside the Defunct Roshen Factory in Russia
The Roshen factory, owned by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, has operated in the Russian city of Lipetsk for 13 years. It was one of the largest manufacturers in city and produced Roshen products to be sold not only in Russia, but abroad as well.
In the Spring of 2017, the Russian Investigative Committee seized the factory’s accounts as part of a fraud case. Therefore, the factory has now ceased operation.
In the summer of that same year, the factory suspended operation. Close to 700 workers were made redundant, leaving just a few dozen employees to maintain the equipment.
Hromadske visited Lipetsk to find out what life is like in the now defunct factory.

RUSSIA: MUSEUM CALLED A VODKA LIBRARY OPENS
Russian/Nat
A new brand of tourist is taking Russia by storm this summer as lovers of Russia's national drink pour into the first ever specialist museum of vodka to be opened in the country.
The museum, called a vodka library has opened in the tiny medieval town of Uglich, on the banks of the Volga river.
Authorities hope hordes of vodka lovers will boost the town's flagging tourist industry, famous for its monasteries and the murder of the son of Ivan the Terrible.
All is quiet on the banks of Russia's ancient Volga river.
In Uglich, 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow, time stands still and history is all around.
Boats like the Karl Marx have seen better times, bringing in total around 200-thousand tourists to Uglich every year in Soviet times.
Now the numbers are dwindling to as little as 80-thousand annually in a town of just under 40-thousand.
But history is giving the town a helping hand again.
Passengers disembarking at Uglich can now visit Russia's first ever vodka museum.
As they knock back the region's own brand of vodka, visitors to the library are told how vodka courses through the veins of the ancient town.
Grirgory Smirnov, uncle of the founder of the famous vodka brand, was born and raised in Uglich, opening his first vodka tavern in the town in 1835.
Monks at the local monastery made bread wine from the late seventeenth century.
Now the museum houses around 500 brands of vodka from 60 distilleries spread all over Russia.
The aim, says museum founder Viktor Minyaev, is to teach Russians the pleasure of drinking vodka in a cultured manner after years of little choice and limited supplies during Soviet times.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Just because you have sex doesn't mean you get venereal disease. It's an essential part of human life. If we have such a culture, it doesn't have to lead to illness. It's the same with the cultural consumption of this drink (vodka) - it won't necessarily lead to drunkenness.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Minyaev, museum founder
As drinkers down the shots in the museum, they are watched over by an icon of St Boniface - the patron saint of drinkers they say at the vodka museum.
All over the world religious foundations were often centres of alcohol production.
And Uglich was no exception.
In the Alekseyevsky monastery, monks made bread wine from 1639 say the history books.
The present inhabitants of the now dilapidated monastery are nuns.
They need all the financial help they can get to restore their church - it was turned into an apartment block for several families in the 1920's.
Now, the nuns are thinking of how to make money.
Some people may be making money out of Uglich's alcohol history, but not them says mother superior Miropiya.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I've heard about it (the vodka museum). But I don't think it's something for women, it's men's business. So I don't think we'll be doing anything like that here. We have to do more church things, nearer to the church.
SUPER CAPTION: Mother Superior Miropiya, Alekseyevsky monastery
Back at the vodka museum there are no such qualms.
The sound of clinking glasses is heard all day as tourists like Valery Kostyev from Moscow enjoy what is a unique institution in Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There isn't even anything like this in Moscow. Not everybody wants to visit churches, or old sights. So we need new, modern, unusual things.
SUPER CAPTION: Valery Kostyev, visitor
The churches have stood in Uglich for over six hundred years.
The vodka museum has some catching up to do, but, so far, there is no shortage of visitors looking for a different kind lesson in Russian history.

I’ll teach you to dream, said the film’s heroine to the children starting their life. In 1984 this promise became the name of a documentary by G. Chukhrai, Yu. Shvyryov and M. Volotsky about the life of one of a kind poet and hero of the national cinema, Mark Donskoy. The Italian neo-realists believed that their art originated from the flow of life typical of Donskoy’s films, considered the director their predecessor and emulated his poetic approach to everyday life. In the early 1970s Mark Donskoy’s name was included in the West in a number of lists of the best film directors of modern time.

Russia: Albino African hedgehog triplets born in captivity
A 2-year-old albino African hedgehog Marusya, a first-time mother, gave birth to triplets in Moscow contact zoo on Tuesday. They became a sensation and attracted attention of mass media and ordinary animal lovers because African hedgehogs hardly ever breed in captivity and all the three babies turned out to be albinos.
Eugenia Polonskaya, zoo worker said, An absolutely unique event happened in our contact zoo: triplets of African hedgehog were born, moreover all of them are albinos! She added, African hedgehogs hardly ever breed in captivity - so this happen one chance in a thousand or even in a million.
Now they are 3 days old and they weigh just 30 grams. Workers of the contact zoo, where all visitors can feed, touch animals and even take them in hands, watch the new born hedgehog babies. They are careful not to be over petted as the mother hedgehog can kill an eat her children should this happen.
The zoo has appealed to visitors via its site and social networking page for help in choosing names for the baby hedgehogs.
Albino African hedgehog, Marusya was brought to Moscow from Novosibirsk just 2 months ago. Her partner's name is Gosha, 6 months Marusya's younger, and was brought from Kazan last spring.

Russia’s two revolutions – in February and October 1917, collectively known as ‘The Russian Revolution’, changed Russia beyond recognition. The February Revolution dismantled the Tsarist autocracy and forced the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II, ending the imperial Romanov dynasty that had ruled the country for over three hundred years. A few months later in October, Russia was to face a further shock - another revolution.
This epic series, using a stunning mixture of CGI, dramatic reconstruction scenes and unique historic library footage, commemorates the centenary of these two most crucial events in Russian history - the February and the October Revolutions.
