Xinfu Market (01:00)
On Guangzhou Street’s south side across from Bopiliao is the old Xinfu Market building, fronted by scores of traditional-style market stalls in narrow, covered lanes. The building, opened in 1935, was Taipei’s first modern public market, housing stalls selling fresh fish/meats, fruits/vegetables, tobacco/alcohol items, Chinese cakes/pastries, etc.
Its heyday was in the 1950s, after Taipei’s population had exploded following the migration of the Nationalist government from mainland China in the late 1940s. Increased competition, notably from the dense grid of stalls that grew before it and later the then-novel supermarkets of the 1990s, led to its eventual abandonment. Now thoroughly renovated, it was reopened earlier this year, housing a history display, café, and other facilities.
The distinctive old building has a horseshoe shape and a narrow central courtyard that facilitates ventilation and light entry. The exterior is Art Deco, and the radial and stair patterns that were avant-garde when it opened have been retained.
Xibenyuan Temple Square (03:40)
Though in a busy area, close to MRT Ximen Station and 7~10 minutes away from the Bopiliao/Xinfu sites on foot, this heritage Pure Land Buddhist temple complex feels hidden away, partially blocked from view by high walls. Built up in the years after 1922, Xibenyuan Temple was Taiwan’s largest Japanese-style Buddhist temple during the Japanese period. A fire in 1975 destroyed the Grand Hall and other key structures, only the Rinbansyo (temple abbot’s residence) and Tree Heart Hall (lecture hall) escaping.
Long left abandoned, squatters were evicted from the site and renovation efforts were carried out through the 2000s to restore the former glory of the complex, giving birth to a new city landmark. The stately Bell Tower stands atop a hillock at the square’s entrance. The brick-built Tree Heart Hall, once used for Dharma teaching, is now a space for art exhibits and temple/area history displays.
Tip: Savor premium Taiwan teas in the elegant Eighty-Eightea teahouse in the renovated Rinbansyo, rich in Japanese aesthetics, the large central room’s tatami flooring creating a Kyoto tea-ceremony ambience.

Wanhua on the rise, Datong ranks poorest in Taipei
For many, Taipei''s Wanhua District conjures up images of ramshackle houses, criminal elements, and poverty. But according to the latest government data, Wanhua is no longer the least affluent district in the city. The dubious honor now goes to Datong District.Data show that the average household income in Wanhua increased from 1.02 million NT in 2014 to 1.21 million NT. That''s the biggest uptick seen in all of Taipei. Experts attribute the rise of Wanhua to the fast growth of its Ximen shopping area. Wanhua could also be getting a boost from the renovated Beimen and plans to build an MRT line in the neighborhood.

對我來說,中山區,林森北路,都有一種神秘的,一種缺德的感覺
The area I live, Zhongshan, has a quite mysteries, forbidden aura. I tried to capture that in this video.

Walking through the Huáxī Night Market - Comidas e coisas estranhas... 万华区华西街,台湾
Huáxī Street, Wanhua District, Taiwan - 万华区华西街,台湾
Night markets in Taiwan are street markets in Taiwan that operate in urban or suburban areas. They are similar to those in areas inhabited by ethnic Chinese, such as Southeast Asia. A few, such as Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market, (or Snake Alley) utilize purpose-built marketplaces but most occupy either sidewalks (pavements) adjacent to streets or entire streets that are normal thoroughfares by day. Some night markets in smaller side streets or lanes feature retractable roofs. Most of the markets operate daily and feature a mixture of individual stalls hawking clothing, consumer goods, xiaochi (Chinese: 小吃; Hanyu Pinyin: xiǎochī; Tongyong Pinyin: siǎochī; similar to snacks or fast food), and specialty drinks. The atmosphere is usually crowded and noisy with hawkers shouting and fast-paced music playing over loudspeakers.

Taipei Drone Flight: Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a modern metropolis with Japanese colonial lanes, busy shopping streets and contemporary buildings. The skyline is crowned by the 509m-tall, bamboo-shaped Taipei 101 skyscraper, with upscale shops at the base and a rapid elevator to an observatory near the top. Taipei is also known for its lively street-food scene and many night markets, including expansive Shilin market. Major attractions include the National Palace Museum, displaying a vast collection of Chinese Imperial art moved from Beijings Forbidden City in 1949, and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The old neighborhoods of Wanhua and Datong are filled with historic sites, including Longshan Temple, founded in 1738 and honoring numerous Buddhist and Taoist gods. Near the city and accessible by metro is the longtime spa region of Beitou, offering soaks at geothermal springs and hikes at adjacent Yangmingshan National Park. Another popular day trip is the Maokong tea region, reached by the 4km-long Maokong gondola from Taipei Zoo. [wikipedia // Google]

Walking Around Beitou (Taipei, Taiwan)
Walking around Beitou / 北投區:
• Historical Beitou Station
• Puji Temple
• Beitou Museum
• Liuhuanggu Sulfur Valley Geothermal Scenic Area
• Fuxing Park Foot-Soaking Pool
Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word Kipatauw, meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs.
In the early Japanese era, Hokuto (Pak-tâu) was a village at the entrance of the well-known North Formosa sulfur district.[3] Three Japanese extracting plants in this district produced about 200 short tons (180,000 kg) of sulfur monthly. The Japanese had already recognized the value of the village as a sanitary resort and constructed a Japanese inn with hot mineral baths provided by the sulfur springs. The hot springs have been developed to include aroma therapy, massage, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and excellent cuisine which complement the entire spa experience.
In addition to the waters, Xin Beitou's other attraction was the girls, and the area had the dubious distinction of being one of Taiwan's largest illegal red light districts. During the 60s, many characterless concrete hotels were built around the park area, and these structures remained the dominant feature of Beitou's landscape for over twenty years.
The late 80's and 90s, however, ushered in a new era. The government made a concerted effort to clean up the area, and the MRT line reached Beitou. As a result, the concrete hotels were either demolished and rebuilt or totally refurbished as luxury spas. In addition, many new apartments were constructed to accommodate young professionals with families who were drawn to the Beitou area because of its good environment and convenient transportation links to downtown Taipei.
