Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and during Byzantine rule it was known as Neapolis (new town). Limassol's historical centre is located around its medieval Limassol Castle and the Old Port. Today the city spreads along the Mediterranean coast and has extended much farther than the castle and port, with its suburbs stretching along the coast to Amathus. To the west of the city is the Akrotiri Area of the British Overseas Territory.
Limassol is famous in Cyprus for its festivals, like the Carnival and Wine Festival. The Limassol Carnival festival lasts for ten (10) days, with jolly and amusing masquerading. The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival, followed by a fancy-dress competition for children. During the Carnival parade in the main streets, large crowds from all over the island gather to watch the floats with the serenade and other masqueraded groups. Many fancy-dress balls and parties take place at many hotels every night.
During the first quarter of September, the great Wine Festival of Cyprus takes place in the Limassol Municipal Garden, every evening between 8.00 hrs – 23.00 hrs. During the festival the visitor has the chance to taste some of the best Cyprus wines, which are offered free of charge. On some evenings, various groups from Cyprus and abroad perform folk dancing and there are also choirs and others.

Video 3:Limassol Archaelogical Museum

The Limassol Archaelogical Museum, has an abundance of Aphrodites, from all periods.
It has recently been enriched with from ancient cemeteries discovered during emergency excavations on sites where hotels were being constructed along the sea front, mainly on the site of the ancient kingdom of Amathus. The site of Amathus has become part of the Cultural Route of Aphrodite, a programme for cultural tourism launched by the Cyprus Tourism Organization which promotes Cyprus as the island of Aphrodite.
In Amathus where the Phoenician influence seems to have been very strong in the Archaic period, excavations have brought to light a very large number of terracotta statuettes of Astarte, capitals in the shape of Hathor's head, a limestone polychrome Hathoric stele which stood in proximity to the royal Palace in Amathus. It is the largest hathoric stele and finest of all those which has been found in Cyprus. It represents a head of the Egyptian goddess Hathor supporting a model of a sanctuary in the recess of which the uraeus, the cobra goddess symbolizing sovereignty, is placed. The goddess Hathor had many common features with the Cypriot goddess.

Limassol Castle, Limassol, Cyprus, Europe
The medieval Limassol Castle is situated near the old harbour in the heart of the historical centre of the city of Limassol. The castle as it appears today is a structure rebuilt circa 1590 under the period of Ottoman rule. Archaeological investigation within the castle revealed that it was built over an Early Christian basilica (4-7th century CE) and a Middle Byzantine monument (10th-11th century CE). Other finds beneath the Castle witness the existence of an important church, possibly the city's first cathedral. According to Etienne Lusignan, the original castle was erected by Guy de Lusignan in 1193. The first official reference to the fort dates to 1228, during the involvement of Frederic II of Germany in the affairs of Cyprus. From its erection until the beginning of the 16th century, damages were caused by the continuous attacks of the town by the Genoese and the Mameluks as well as by earthquakes alternating with restorations and reconstructions.
In 1538 the Ottomans captured Limassol and the castle. The Venetian governor of Cyprus, after recapturing the castle, decided to demolish it in order to avoid its possible seizure. This destruction was completed in 1567-68. After the Ottoman acquisition of Cyprus in 1576, the remains or parts of the remains of the castle were incorporated in the new Ottoman fort, completed in 1590, which was considerably strengthened. The underground chamber and the first floor were transformed into prison cells and remained in use until 1950. According to tradition, this is where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her Queen of England in 1191.
Kourion (Cyprus) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kourion in Cyprus.
An ancient ruined city of immense dimensions, Kourion is one of the most interesting archaeological sites on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Tourists from all over the world visit the impressive ruins of the ancient city that is spectacularly located on a cliff seventy metres above the sea. The city’s well preserved and restored theatre was once an Hellenistic complex and was transformed during the Roman period. It featured three and a half thousand seats and a splendid view across the beach, the Akrotiri Peninsula, and the sea. Each performance must have been a veritable adventure! The House Of The Gladiators is a large private Patrician building, named after the fascinating battle scenes on its floor. The House Of The Achill is a residence whose floor mosaics feature various geometrical patterns and ancient heroes dressed in female attire. Outside the former city wall is the Stadium. The remains of its stone tribunes line the two hundred and seventeen metre long arena. Alas, in the seventh century Arab invasion caused Kourion’s eventual downfall.
