CYPRUS: Limassol City Castle & Old Port (Lemesos) [HD]
Limassol's historical centre is located around its medieval castle and the old port. Today the city spreads along the Mediterranean coast and has extended much farther than the castle and port, with its suburbs stretching along the coast to Amathus. Limassol is the second largest town in Cyprus after the capital Nicosia.
The medieval Castle of Limassol houses the medieval collection of the Cyprus Museum since 1987. Although there existed earlier architectural phases of an older and larger structure, the present edifice dates to the period of Ottoman rule. The castle is one of the ten castles of Cyprus.
The Agia Napa church was built towards the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, replacing an older 18th century church. It is dedicated to the Virgin Maria.
What is today known as the Limassol Old Port used to be the main port of Limassol.

Hello, my name is Zack, and I like to (*don't forget the pause*) backpack around the world! I am from Memphis, Tennessee. I have had the travel bug my whole life. I used to go on month long trips with my grandparents to Western USA when I was a kid. Fast forward to summer 2013, we went to Disney World and I went to the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot and saw the O' Canada 360 Circlevision film and I was like, I want to go to Canada!. Summer 2014 I took a roadtrip up to Toronto, Ontario. Since then I've been traveling around the world.
Limassol Castle, Limassol, Cyprus, Europe
The medieval Limassol Castle is situated near the old harbour in the heart of the historical centre of the city of Limassol. The castle as it appears today is a structure rebuilt circa 1590 under the period of Ottoman rule. Archaeological investigation within the castle revealed that it was built over an Early Christian basilica (4-7th century CE) and a Middle Byzantine monument (10th-11th century CE). Other finds beneath the Castle witness the existence of an important church, possibly the city's first cathedral. According to Etienne Lusignan, the original castle was erected by Guy de Lusignan in 1193. The first official reference to the fort dates to 1228, during the involvement of Frederic II of Germany in the affairs of Cyprus. From its erection until the beginning of the 16th century, damages were caused by the continuous attacks of the town by the Genoese and the Mameluks as well as by earthquakes alternating with restorations and reconstructions.
In 1538 the Ottomans captured Limassol and the castle. The Venetian governor of Cyprus, after recapturing the castle, decided to demolish it in order to avoid its possible seizure. This destruction was completed in 1567-68. After the Ottoman acquisition of Cyprus in 1576, the remains or parts of the remains of the castle were incorporated in the new Ottoman fort, completed in 1590, which was considerably strengthened. The underground chamber and the first floor were transformed into prison cells and remained in use until 1950. According to tradition, this is where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her Queen of England in 1191.

Limassol Old Port Cyprus Lifestyle in Limassol (Shot & Edited by Terry Slim)
Limassol, Cyprus • Лимассол, Кипр
Limassol, Cyprus • Лимассол, Кипр
Limassol is a city on the southern coast of Cyprus. Limassol is the second largest urban area in Cyprus, with an urban population of 160,000-176,700.
The Port of Limassol is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean transit trade and the largest port in Cyprus. It has also become one of the most important tourism, trade, and service-providing centres in the area. Limassol is renowned for its extensive cultural traditions, and is home to the Cyprus University of Technology. A wide spectrum of activities and a number of museums and archaeological sites are available to the interested visitor. Consequently, Limassol attracts a wide range of tourists mostly during an extended summer season to be accommodated in a wide range of hotels and apartments. A large marina lies near the old town, 500 meters from the Limassol medieval castle.
Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and during Byzantine rule it was known as Neapolis (new town). Limassol's historical centre is located around its medieval Limassol Castle and the Old Port. Today the city spreads along the Mediterranean coast and has extended much farther than the castle and port, with its suburbs stretching along the coast to Amathus. To the west of the city is the Akrotiri Area of the British Overseas Territory.
Limassol is famous in Cyprus for its festivals, like the Carnival and Wine Festival. The Limassol Carnival festival lasts for ten (10) days, with jolly and amusing masquerading. The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival, followed by a fancy-dress competition for children. During the Carnival parade in the main streets, large crowds from all over the island gather to watch the floats with the serenade and other masqueraded groups. Many fancy-dress balls and parties take place at many hotels every night.
During the first quarter of September, the great Wine Festival of Cyprus takes place in the Limassol Municipal Garden, every evening between 8.00 hrs – 23.00 hrs. During the festival the visitor has the chance to taste some of the best Cyprus wines, which are offered free of charge. On some evenings, various groups from Cyprus and abroad perform folk dancing and there are also choirs and others.

The Medieval Castle of Limassol - Κάστρο Λεμεσού, Cyprus

Limassol Castle - Medieval Museum, Cyprus
The medieval castle is one of the ten castles of Cyprus. It was built by the Byzantines around 1000 AD. Around the same period, a chapel was also built there. Richard the Lionheart is supposed to have married his fiancée on this site after her ship was grounded nearby in 1191 as she accompanied him to the Third Crusade, on his way to Holy Land. The Castle was used as a prison between 1790 and 1940 and it now serves as a medieval museum. The collection that the museum provides covers the era of 400–1870 AD. A visitor can see numerous exhibits: cannons, wood carvings of the 17th and 18th century, paintings and tombstones, statues, suits of armour, coins, terracotta, metalware and pottery, glass and marble articrafts.
