Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is a lively city, with over 10,000 years of history and civilisation.
The city and island's cultural heritage is obvious in the many historic monuments and archaeological sites on display: prehistoric settlements; classical Greek temples; Roman amphitheatres and villas; byzantine churches; Gothic cathedrals; venetian fortifications and Muslim mosques.
But there is also the contemporary face of this ancient capital. Four exhibitions currently give us the chance to see Nicosia's artistic landscape.
In one of the greatest artistic events in Nicosia, 'The World of Cyprus', has returned home after 37 years in Thessaloniki.
Painted by Adamantios Diamantis, the monumental work is an iconic and symbolic painting for Cypriots. Diamantis travelled the island for years, making hundreds of sketches, capturing the characteristics of the landscape and the people of his homeland.
The painting represents a frieze of traditional Cypriot life; a lifestyle that is almost extinct.
It is now being shown in the Leventis Municipal Museum.
Curator of the exhibition, Eleni Nikita, gave some further insight into the painting:
Adamantios Diamantis painted this work, between 1967 and 1972. It is highly acclaimed, because of what the artist tried to achieve with this monumental painting, she said.
The dimensions are huge - 17.5m in length and 1.75m in height. Diamantis tried not to show a complete group portrait, but rather some symbolic figures, characteristic of traditional Cypriot society.
In 1976, 'The World of Cyprus' was put on display in the Telloglion Foundation in Thessaloniki. After 37 years, it has been returned permanently to its birth place, and Diamantis' home.
Th painting will soon be hung in the new Leventis Gallery, which is due to be inaugurated in March.
Vartan Tashdjian is one of the most important contemporary Cypriot artists. His latest exhibition was held at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) in Nicosia. It featured 32 new paintings, celebrating the artist's 40-year career.
Of Armenian origin, Tashdjian was raised in Cyprus, and his paintings are a celebration of the island's natural beauty. He has dedicated his life and his work to Cyprus, his adopted home, and its diverse land and seascapes are his greatest inspirations.
His style is a combination of cubism and impressionism.
Tashdjian spoke to euronews about his particular style:
My source of inspiration is nature and especially Cyprus nature. As you notice, I present Cyprus nature in a completely different way. In Cyprus and especially at the seaside, I feel myself like coming home. If you ask me why, at a time like this, when our country is going through some difficulties, we are organising such an exhibition. My answer is: life goes on. We have to be optimistic.
'Costas Stathis: The unknown pioneer of contemporary Cypriot art' introduces fans to the unknown and opulent talent of a great artist who spent most of his life in the small village of Askas in Cyprus.
The exhibition will be held in the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts until December 5, which will mark the occasion of a hundred years since Stathis' birth.
Niki Loizidi, an art historian and the curator of the exhibition, spoke enthusiastically to euronews about Stathis:
Allow me to present his work in an impressive way: he is the Matisse of Cyprus. He would have no trouble holding his own next to the European Fauves. Unfortunately, we have only recently discovered him, and it is too late. We are already in the 21st century. However, his work is topical and very contemporary. Costas Stathis is really the pioneer of all pioneers for Cyprus, but also for Greece.
Mariza Bargilly will present her 4th solo exhibition in the Diatopos Centre of Contemporary Art until November 28. Entitled 'Walkthrough', the subject of this collection is spaces. Spaces that she lives in, she visits, she knows very well. Even empty spaces, where there is no life. This emptiness aims to leave the spectator with a feeling of loneliness, abandonment, complete silence.
We asked her if there are many young artists in Cyprus who produce contemporary forms of art.

Film Club Cyprus - VIII. Cyprus Russian Festival Promenade
This is a clip shot at the 8th annual Cyprus-Russian Festival in Limassol. I shot one part the day before. The other part I had to film at 10am, because by midday, we had more than 10,000 visitors there. It was impossible to film it like that then. This video shows the promenade with all the shops and cafes. This year, the Cyprus-Russian festival took place in the beautiful municipal gardens of the town of Limassol, less than 50 meters away from the beaches and the mediterranean sea front.
Ayia Napa Street Art Festival 2014
Ayia Napa Street Art Festival is a fresh initiative that takes over the city. For the first time ever street artists will take over the public spaces of Ayia Napa. People who choose the streets as their gallery often prefer to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived confines of the formal art world. Using conceptual slogans, graffiti, stickers, small – scale street artworks, murals and so forth, we desire of urban dwellers to transform public places into more intimate, creative and personal spaces through art. Participants will have one week to implement their idea for given public spaces. The artists have complete freedom of expression. The only request is to decorate the walls of the city with positive emotions emitting artwork.
The idea to organize a festival of this kind appeared by itself. Following strong support from Ayia Napa municipality Paparazzi Art Studio recently started to mentor event which gradually grew into an international festival. The artists who show willingness come not only from Cyprus or are based here, but also from Germany, Belgium, Ukraine, Greece and Switzerland.
The organizers of Ayia Napa Street Art Festival wanted to show the street art variety of styles and techniques, different approach to art and its relationship with the environment by choosing artists that were performed. Ayia Napa city's public spaces will be flooded with surrealist stories, pop - surrealist characters, graphics, 3D graffiti and incredible photorealism. Street art and it’s forms have more and more impact on the daily lives of local people and town guests who see this art around them. We are very grateful to the residents who sincerely and enthusiastically adopted the idea of the Street Art Festival in Ayia Napa. It has become one of the many ways in which we experience the city that we live in.

CYPRUS LEVENTIO MUSEUM OF NICOSIA
ADVERTISING VIDEO FOR LEVENTIO MUSEUM
For the project i had to continue working with the same identity i used for my previous applications and create a tv advertisement that would attract the viewers to visit the museum. I did my research and some thinking in order to make my concept for the way that the tv spot will approach the museum and make it relate with my previous applications. I then got my video camera and went to Old Nicosia and wanted to capture the movement of the people, the everyday life and get a feel of the history of the city and the museum as well. Inside my video i start with the quote The facts and the seasons change and the people go up and down the street and they reflect on the glass and i wanted to show the contrast and the change that my quote is talking about. Then i say that a city is divided in two Ancient and modern and i wanted to give the message of Cyprus that is divided in two and the city has it's modern side and it's old city as well. I was sitting in a modern new cafe place in the Old Nicosia and everything around me gave me the feeling of old so we have these two elements together. Then the sentence says Everything changes that's why we can see those two shapes going the other way to show this change that goes on in everything and in life in general. Then i mention that the history is protected and remains to show that everything goes through changes but the history is always there and the changes doesn't affect them, it's something stable that are stored in the museum and is preserved there and its safe. I used the red color to show the blood and the dead people that were killed in the wars in order for us now to have these things preserved in the museums. They fought for our country and now we have all these things in the museums for us to be reminded of that and i have the green color in my composition as well because is a color of hope. So after the deaths that happened we have hope for the future through the objects that are here and remind us our past. The logotype of the museum in the end is on white background and i used white to correspond with my previous applications but in order to show something positive comes out of the museum.
