It's a Sunday evening in Germany and we're wrapping up a full day excursion that took us from Frankfurt up to Cologne. On the way back from Cologne, we pull off the Autobahn and spend a little time in Limburg Germany, exploring the Cathedral and cemetery.

It's late in the afternoon and we're heading back to Frankfurt after touring Cologne but we have enough time to stop and visit Limburg. It's a quaint little town on the outskirts of Frankfurt known for the striking, painted Limburg Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum, and the medieval half-timbered houses in the old town.

First mass at Limburg cathedral after Pope expels bishop from diocese, reactions
Limburg Cathedral held its first mass on Sunday since the Pope expelled its bishop over a financial scandal earlier this week.
The Pope temporarily expelled Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst from his diocese on Wednesday pending the outcome of a church inquiry into his 31 (m) million euro (43 (m) million US dollar) new residence complex.
The Vatican has not said how long the bishop would spend away from his diocese - but they have refused calls to remove him permanently.
But in the congregation, feelings are mixed over the bishop's fate.
Klaus Paeper travelled from nearby Mainz to express his sympathy for the bishop and to pray for him.
I wanted to come here today to pray for the bishop, the diocese, and our church as it suffers through this crisis. I believe it is in God's hands how it will end, and that is why I came here to pray, he said.
Local resident Marianne Weingarten-Steffes felt differently. The decision made in Rome was a good one. A statement was made and I personally do not think that the Bishop will return, she said.
Before the final decision can be made everyone has to take a step back, but the bishop won't return because, really, he cannot return, she added.
The Vatican said the bishop was leaving pending the outcome of a German church investigation into the expenditures and his role in the affair.
Tebartz-van Elst has defended the expenditures, saying the bill was actually for 10 projects and there were additional costs because the buildings were under historical protection.
But in a country where Martin Luther launched the Reformation five centuries ago in response to what he said were excesses and abuses within the church, the outcry has been enormous.
The perceived lack of financial transparency has also struck a chord since a church tax in Germany brings in billions a year to the German church.

We leave the Rhine and make our way into the valley of the river Lahn. The valley of the meandering Lahn is very picturesque, and there are many sites worth a visit on the way. Our first stop is Nassau. The castle, Burg Nassau, is the ancestral seat of the princely house of Nassau and the namesake of other entities with the name Nassau. The most famous branch of the Nassau family is the house Orange-Nassau: it is now the Royal House of The Kingdom of the Netherlands. After exploring Nassau, we make our way to Limburg, a pretty town with numerous half-timbered houses. Most notable is the Romanesque cathedral.

Via wegen met prachtige vergezichten en mooie natuur rijden we binnendoor naar Limburg an der Lahn. Bij Vittall treffen we het monument van Koning Koenraad aan die op een klif uitkijkt op de rivier de Lahn.
Limburg a.d. Lahn is een gemeente in de Duitse deelstaat Hessen. Het is de Kreisstadt van het Landkreis Limburg-Weilburg. De stad telt 33.619 inwoners.
De dom van Limburg (Dom St. Georg) is de bisschoppelijke kerk van de Hessische stad Limburg an der Lahn. Het is een laatromaanse basiliek met vroeggotische elementen, die hoog boven de stad uitrijst, vanwege haar ligging op een rots. De dom heeft zeven torens en is van buiten in zijn oorspronkelijke kleuren beschilderd.
De dom is pas sinds 1827 bisschopskerk: de kerk werd gebouwd als stiftskerk. De bouw begon aan het eind van de 12de eeuw, op de plek van een eerdere kerk. In 1235 kon de kerk worden ingewijd. De kerk werd gebouwd als een driebeukige kruisbasiliek met tribunes boven de zijbeuken. De beide westtorens zijn 37 m hoog zijn en hebben een rombisch dak. Vanbinnen zijn ze, net als de verwante torens van de Liebfrauenkirche in Andernach, als een westtribune verbonden met de kerk. In de westfaçade bevindt zich een roosvenster, een van de gotische elementen in het gebouw. De hoogste van de zeven torens is de 66 m hoge vieringtoren.
De hoofdzakelijk rood met witte beschildering van de dom accentueert de architectuur en werd tussen 1968 en 1972 aangebracht, nadat de oorspronkelijke beschildering een eeuw eerder was verwijderd.
In de noordelijke dwarsbeuk bevindt zich het grafmonument van Konrad Kurzbold, de in 948 gestorven stichter van het stift.
