Olympic Player becomes refugee in '56 Hungary - Cecília Berkes
Cecília Berkes was a successful canoeing champion in Hungary. She participated in the Olympic Games in 1952 and 1956. Just in the time of the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, back in her Homeland the unexpected happened. A few hundred students started a demonstration on 23 October 1956, which than within several hours pulled 200.000 people on the street in Budapest and a revolt spread across the whole country. After a short period of freedom which followed the collapse of the Hungarian Government, a large Soviet force invaded Hungary killing thousands of civilians.
Cecilia arrived to Hungary after the Olympics finding a country that closed its borders. Her husband left to England for freedom and she decided to follow him. It was not easy to organise the escape and leaving their 2 years old Son at home, yet as so many people in the world whom are doing the unprecedented, they voted for a future of freedom. This short conversation is Cecíli's story.
What is the motivation behind human migration? What drives people to leave their home and family? History provides us plenty of human stories that can show us, human migration exists ever since life exists on our Earth. There has never been any authority that could stop people to leave their country, in fact that was usually the first reason why people are leaving their homes. The risk of being killed in a war, the inhuman conditions, economical, political reasons, the need to learning about different cultures ...

The Vintage Tapes - Estamos Ai - Recorded in 1989
In 1989, I got a call from outstanding pianist Stephen Sedergreen (son of the legendary Australian pianist Bob Sedergreen - asking me to join a group of local musicians he put together for an episode of JAZZ AS NOW (ABC Television). Steve was playing in some of my Brazilian Jazz outfits at the time. He wanted a Brazilian song for the show and I came up with ESTAMOS AI but I've chosen to play it with a bateria instead of a drum kit. I brought the charts, a surdo, my repinique, chose a simple call/response for the bateria and a equally simple arrangement for the song (I can't recall if I actually created this arrangement or just borrowed it from some my old Milton Banana LPs!!) and I had a ball!!
Great to see, nearly 20 years later, Loch & Stevie going for it on this piece. Loch, a classy, talented musician, eventually became the sax/flute player of my (then) new Brazilian Jazz band Brazjaz, which in 1991 had its debut at the Limerick Arms, (then) Melbourne's most prestigious Jazz Club, located in South Melbourne.
