Frank McCourt Museum - Limerick, Ireland
Frank McCourt was a Pulizer Prize winning author who grew up in extreme proverty in Limerick, Ireland in the 1930's and 40's. Born in America, he returned to the United States when he was 17 years old. After earning a college degree from New York University he taught in the New York Public School System until he retired. After retirement he wrote about this early life in a book he titled, Angela's Ashes. It won the Pulitizer Price in 1997. In 2012, a museum honoring McCourt was opened in Limerick in the school he attended until he was 13 years old.
The Hunt Museum, Limerick
In this video, Hugh Maguire, director of the the Hunt Museum chats about one of Limerick's most loved attractions and highlights some of the exhibitions and events planned for 2012 at the museum.
The Hunt Museum exhibits one of Ireland's greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from the Neolithic to the 20th Century, including works by Renoir, Picasso and Yeats.
There are artefacts from Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Olmec civilisation. There is also an important collection of Irish archaeological material ranging from Neolithic flints and Bronze Age material, including a Bronze Age shield and cauldron, to later Christian objects such as the unique 9th century Antrim Cross.
One of the strengths of the collection is the medieval material, which include statues in stone and wood, painted panels, jewellery, enamels, ivories, ceramics, crystal and crucifixes.
18th and 19th century decorative arts are also represented with fine examples of silver, glass and ceramics. Artists' works in the collection include Pablo Picasso, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Roderic O'Conor, Jack B. Yeats, Robert Fagan and Henry Moore.

So we are here at the Hunt Museum in Limerick city and its a fantastic museum with over two thousand works of art, all donated to the city by John and Gertrude Hunt, a very generous family. And we're lucky enough to see art from the stone age to the twentieth century. It's fantastic.
We're having some of the lovely desert at the Museum cafe. Its really worth a visit if you come to the Museum. Or even if you dont. Its worth the cake.
Foynes Flying Boat Museum, Limerick
The Foynes Flying Boat Museum, housed in the original terminal building in Foynes, recalls that nostalgic era when Foynes became the centre of the aviation world from 1937 to 1945.
Our amazing story is told through a comprehensive range of exhibits and graphic illustrations featured throughout the original Terminal Building including in our authentic 1940's cinema; the Radio and Weather Rooms—complete with transmitters, receivers and Morse code equipment; the Brendan O'Regan restaurant and of course, the only full sized replica B314 flying boat.
Museum of the Moonn in Limerick
Limerick St. Patrick's Festival 2019 brings you Museum of the Moon - a new touring artwork by artist Luke Jerram, bringing together a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound. The moon features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.
Tying in with the theme of this year’s parade 'One Giant Leap' and honouring the lasting effect that the moon landing has had on the world, the Museum of the Moon will land in St Mary’s Cathedral from 15th - 24th March.

Balade dans la ville de Limerick - Comté de Limerick - Irlande
Limerick est la troisième ville en importance d'Irlande. C'est une ville dynamique et elle possède de nombreux bâtiments culturels et historiques.
Nous avons décidé d'entreprendre une balade d'environ 3 heures pour parcourir les rues de la ville.
Nous sommes donc partis à pied de notre hôtel et avons marché sur Dock Road. Par la suite, nous nous sommes promenés sur une belle promenade érigée en bordure de la rivière Shannon.
L'endroit est paisible et plusieurs personnes s'y rendent pour nourrir les cygnes qui y sont d'ailleurs très nombreux.
Toujours en longeant la rivière Shannon, il est possible d'avoir une jolie vue du King John's Castle, une des attractions majeures de la ville de Limerick.
Ce château a été érigé au XIIIe siècle et il est situé dans le quartier médiéval de la ville. Des frais d'entrée de 10,50 € sont exigés pour la visite du château.
Nous n'avons pas pu visiter le château car nous sommes arrivés après l'heure de fermeture.
Nous avons fait un arrêt à la Cathédrale Ste-Marie (St Mary’s Cathedral). Construite en 1168, elle est le plus ancien bâtiment de la ville.
Cependant, comme nous sommes arrivés sur le tard, les portes de la cathédrale étaient fermées à clé. Donc, nous nous en sommes tenus à la visite extérieure de ce monument historique.
Juxtaposé à la cathédrale, le cimetière comporte certains caveaux qui datent de quelques siècles et on y retrouve également de belles croix celtiques.
Dommage que nous n'ayons pu visiter l'intérieur de la cathédrale car cette dernière est réputée entre autres pour la beauté de ses vitraux.
Nous avons poursuivi notre route jusqu'au King John's Castle. Dans ce secteur se trouvent d'autres belles maisons d'époque.
Nous avons continué sur Bridge Street pour traverser sur l'autre rive de la rivière Shannon et ainsi avoir une vue pittoresque du King John's Castle et du Thomond Bridge.
Près de la rivière se trouve le fameux bloc de pierre calcaire qui repose sur un socle et sur lequel le traité de Limerick aurait été signé en 1691.
D'ailleurs un panneau explicatif donne des informations sur ce fameux traité.
A proximité, on retrouve également la St Munchin's Church, église construite au début du XIXe siècle.
Nous sommes revenus sur nos pas et avons aperçu sur notre route un pan de mur qui appartenait à la Bourke's House, un ancien manoir médiéval. Il serait l'un des lieux les plus anciens de la ville.
Nous avons également vu l'église Ste-Marie érigée vers 1930 ainsi que le Hunt Museum, un musée d'art et d'antiquité.

The 'That's Limerick' event, which took place on Tuesday, June 18 in Smock Alley Theatre, Templebar, Dublin showcased all the city and county has to offer in terms of culture, attractions, food, accommodation, entertainment and more! Attended by key business leaders and well-known Limerick personalities, the event played host to Limerick hotels, venues, academic institutes, sporting facilities and festivals.
Those in attendance including Ministers Jan O Sullivan & Michael Noonan, Kamal Ibrahim & Deric Hartigan were treated to fine food from Limerick's top restaurants and hotels, a fashion show produced by Limerick's first lady Celia Holman Lee and a variety of Limerick cultural performances including a performance from 14 year old Limerick singer/songwriter Leah Melling, a dance performance from Limerick's hip hop festival Make a Move, scenes from various Limerick theatre groups, aerial acrobatics from Fidget Feet and a choral performance from Unity Gospel Choir.
The lively evening, supported by Fáilte Ireland, gave a taste of how Limerick's top venues are preparing for what promises to be a pivotal year for the city and also to promote Limerick as a conference and sport event location. The city is expected to attract national and international conferences throughout the 2014 National City of Culture year through the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau and the work of the Failte Ireland Business Tourism Conference Ambassador programme.
Karl Wallace, Artistic Director, Limerick City of Culture 2014 tells me, We believe that there will be a significant boost to the economy due to Limerick being chosen as the City of Culture for 2014. Next year the spotlight turns to Limerick and its many cultural offerings; welcoming visitors and neighbours to share in the creative talents of the city and its incredible people.
