With the façade extending for 794 ft (242 m) along the eastern side of Red Square, the Upper Trading Rows were built between 1890 and 1893 by Alexander Pomerantsev (responsible for architecture) and Vladimir Shukhov (responsible for engineering). The trapezoidal building features a combination of elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof, a similar style to the great 19th-century railway stations of London. William Craft Brumfield described the GUM building as a tribute both to Shukhov's design and to the technical proficiency of Russian architecture toward the end of the 19th century
The glass-roofed design made the building unique at the time of construction. The roof, the diameter of which is 46 ft (14 m), looks light, but it is a firm construction made of more than 50,000 metal pods (about 819 short tons (743 t)), capable of supporting snowfall accumulation. Illumination is provided by huge arched skylights of iron and glass, each weighing some 820 short tons (740 t) and containing in excess of 20,000 panes of glass. The facade is divided into several horizontal tiers, lined with red Finnish granite, Tarusa marble, and limestone. Each arcade is on three levels, linked by walkways of reinforced concrete

Red Square Glitz: Shopping spree time machine in Moscow's GUM
RT heads to a legendary shopping mall that was built by the tsars, hated by Stalin and is now place the capital's fashion lovers just cannot do without. If you still have not bought your Christmas presents, there is one place in Moscow where you can do it in true style. Just opposite the Kremlin and Lenin's Mausoleum, there is Russia's largest department store, dating back to the days of the tsars. Size, glamour and lavish architecture -- what else would you expect from a shopping center that stands in Red Square? Taking up the entire eastern side of Red Square, it is known as GUM, which is short for Main Department Store. The site where it stands has for centuries been a bustling trading quarter. When the building opened in 1893, its steel framework and glass roof were on the cutting edge of technology. With its mix of steel and glass, GUM resembles the 19th-century train stations of Paris and London, while its traditional Russian-style decorations make it look more like a medieval palace than a shopping mall. The building oozes wealth and luxury: marble, granite and limestone are everywhere. The three-story complex has three levels for a true shop-till-you-drop experience. At the end of the 19th century, it was the largest shopping center in Europe. Before the 1917 Revolution, it contained a staggering 1,200 stores. After the Revolution, vibrant trading dwindled, and in 1928 GUM was closed and turned into offices. The opulent building, however, continued to be an eyesore for the Soviet authorities, deemed to be an unsuitable neighbor for the Kremlin and Lenin's tomb. Plan after plan was developed to hide GUM behind a wall to separate it from Red Square or to tear it down altogether to make room for some of Stalin's grand construction projects. They all proved too expensive and complicated. After Stalin's death in 1953, the newly revamped center quickly reopened, becoming one of the few Soviet stores not plagued by regular shortages of consumer goods. Queues of shoppers often extended all the way across Red Square. Nowadays, crowds gather here for a different reason -- you can hardly find a place more central to skate in Moscow. After the fall of the Soviet Union, GUM reinvented itself as a home for exclusive boutiques, offering pricey designer shopping. A mix of Imperial, Soviet and post-Soviet chic, it has become a cult institution. So it is definitely worth window shopping -- even if you cannot flash the cash.

Russia's new Mariinsky Theatre draws criticism
Subscribe to our channel
Russia's new Mariinsky II theatre has opened in St Petersburg with a gala conducted by Valery Gergiev and other star performers.
The modern ballet and opera house was inaugurated on Thursday by the historic and original Mariinsky Theatre.
The event will coincide with the 60th birthday of the opera director Gergiev. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected in the audience.
Performers at the gala will include the great Spanish tenor Placido Domingo and the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, whose early career at the Mariinsky catapulted her to international stardom.
Among the ballet dancers performing will be the Russian ballerina, Ulyana Lopatkina, and Diana Vishneva, in a gala that the theatre clearly hopes will outdo the reopening of Moscow's Bolshoi in October 2011 after a major refit.
Al Jazeera's David Chater, reporting from St Petersburg, said that it was Putin's political muscle that made sure there was enough money for the project.
He said the Mariinsky II is part of Putin and Gergiev's dream is to make St Petersburg a capital of culture.
The new theatre, which cost a total of $700m, lies just behind the famous Mariinsky Theatre, which was founded in the 18th century and was the birthplace of the ballets like Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet.
Contemporary theatre
The building, completed by Canadian firm Diamond and Shmitt Associates, has come under criticism from some prominent cultural figures like Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky and filmmaker Alexander Sokurov.
Al Jazeera's Chater said the locals he interviewed view the theatre as a blot on St Petersburg's cityscape.
The biege limestone of the facade of the new theatre has prompted critics to describe it as a public swimming pool or a supermarket, he said.
But Gergiev told people to hold their judgement until they see the interior.
The answer to why we built [this] will be apparent when you enter the theatre, he said.
We never had a space with such outstanding acoustics [in Russia], Gergiev said.
I think that now we have one of the best modern opera theatres in the world.
The contemporary white space of the theatre with a magnificent view of St Petersburg through large windows is markedly different from the baroque surroundings of the main Mariinsky building.
Gergiev, currently also chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, openly acknowledged that none of the plans would have been possible without the support of Putin, whom he has publicly praised for restoring stability in Russia.

The valley hill about 30 minutes from Lake Seliger. The altitude here is 228 meters above sea level. A small spring flowing through the forests. The Russian people value this water and call it a mother. I turned to the cabin. Water is constantly rising from the ground. It is the water source where the Volga River runs through the western part of Russia. A life-like river for the Russians. Those who visit here want to feel the sacred water of the Volga River. It is very refreshing. I can not express myself in words. The ball is a famous river in Russia and a river with a very historical meaning. We also call it the Russian artery. I touched the water on the Volga River directly. It is dark red. The terrain here is a mixture of glacial sediments and coal mines, and groundwater is red. The Russians regard the red color of the Volga River as sacred.

Feel like a Russian yourself this afternoon and try to see St. Petersburg through the eyes of its inhabitants. While touring majestic St. Petersburg, one is dazzled by the beauty of its palaces, cathedrals and parks, but the city offers much more than this. You'll visit the metro's stunning stations, intended by Stalin to be the palaces for the people. The best Soviet architects were employed to design St. Petersburg's metro stations. Thousands of tons of marble, granite and limestone were used to face the walls, and sculptures, mosaics and chandeliers were commissioned from leading artists. The first line, opened in 1955, is the most fascinating. You'll be shown a few stations on this line and take a short ride on the train. A peek at St. Petersburg's markets and food stores provides an intriguing insight into local life. Many locals shop for food in the food markets which sell fruits, vegetables, fresh meat and fish, delicious homemade cottage cheese and wonderful natural honey. Sellers in the markets come from all over the former Soviet Union and one can witness quite a variety of nationalities there and enjoy friendly attitudes. You'll be treated to a variety of vodkas and traditional Russian condiments served to compliment this famous Russian drink. After the vodka sampling, you'll be shown to your coach for the return transfer to your ship.
