KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK - Thailand’s Best Day Trip, Cheow Lan Lake
Just two hours north of Krabi Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is hands down Thailand’s best day trip! Don’t miss Cheow Lan Lake where you can boat around massive limestone cliffs and glistening turquoise water. Khao Sok is truly the best of Thailand.
We hired a private boat for 1500 Thai Baht (around $45 USD) for a two hour tour around Cheow Lan Lake. There were barely any other tourists out on the lake so we really felt like we had the entire national park to ourselves. Our boat driver took us around Khao Sok Lake where we stopped at the Khao Sok floating bungalows to take a swim. That’s where Ryan decided to throw fish food in the water surrounding me so about 1,000 huge fish swarmed around me to eat! That was gross.
Other than the near “DeathbyFish”, we urge you to go to Khao Sok National Park because it is easily one of the best things to do in Thailand. Khao Sok is located in Surat Thani, about two hours north of Krabi Thailand and 3 hours north of Phuket. The close proximity to southern Thailand’s main tourist destinations makes it perfect for day trips in Thailand.
The popularity of Khao Sok National Park is just beginning, so it’s still considered one of the unexplored Thailand hot spots. Most locals we spoke to had never been to the park. If a day trip to Khao Sok is too ambitious for you, there are some amazingly immersive places to stay in Khao Sok including a handful of Cheow Lan Lake bungalows to choose from and mountain resorts deep within the national park’s forest.
We stayed in Krabi for 30 days and we wanted to explore more than the typical tourists islands that everyone heads to, so Cheow Lan Lake was a perfect Thailand island alternative.

INCREDIBLE CHEOW LAN LAKE TOUR | Khao Sok national park, Thailand | Vlog 005
CHEOW LAN LAKE TOUR STARTS AT 07:44.
We fly down from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then bus it over with the locals (and a chicken!?) to Khao Sok National Park.
The next day we go on a one day lake tour of Cheow Lan Lake, the artificial lake that spans 185 sq km with Kwai Jungle Experience. With stunningly beautiful limestone cliffs towering over emerald waters it's clear why so many are now flocking there to visit. Follow along as we sightsee around the lake, visit floating bungalows and trek through the rainforest to a pitch black cave.
After a long day we eat an absolutely mind-blowing meal at Wind Song restaurant & bar, a fantastic restaurant in Khao Sok offering a large menu, full bar and proper espresso coffee. Get the massaman curry - you will not regret it. Also, the owner is the most welcoming and friendliest person we have met so far on our travels - he really is amazing.

Is Khao Sok the most beautiful part of Thailand?
Khao Sok is an incredible national park in Surat Thani Province in Southern Thailand. The area has some of the best preserved tropical evergreen forest (aka jungle) in Thailand. The Cheow Lan reservoir lets you get in by boat and get way closer to the jungle than you would otherwise be able to which means you can see some really incredible wildlife. We didn't see any but if you take a proper multi-day kayaking trip it's probably the best place in Thailand to see elusive wild elephants in a way that's safe for humans and animals alike.
The limestone karsts here are reminiscent of areas of Southern China, Halong Bay in Vietnam, and Krabi in Thailand. People often assume photos from here are in Krabi and that the lake is the sea, but it's all fresh water. For us, it's got to be a top five most beautiful place in Thailand and we can never really get sick of being here. For everything you need to know about visiting, click the link below to our website.

Khao sok lake what a day! | Travel the world Vlog 15
Seeing the incredible Khao Sok lake in Khao Sok national park is one of the main must do khao sok tours. We got to ride a boat across the lake, trek the thai rainforest, explore a cave, jump off diving platforms into the beautiful lake and kayak on the lake.
Khao sok nationalpark is in the Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. The Cheow Lan Lake is actually man made, it was created by a dam which now provides green electricity via hydroelectric power. The lake took approximately 3 years to flood completely and has enhanced the beauty of the area with limestone karst formations and luscious thai rainforest surrounding the lake. The area is now home to several native animals, including several species of monkey.
I would definitely recommend this tour out of all the available khao sok tours as you get to see a bit of everything!

Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary and Cheow Lan Lake [2019]
INCREDIBLE! Elephants and abundant wildlife is why this is Thailand's hidden gem. Khlong Saeng is the most remote part of Cheow Lan Lake, in Khao Sok National Park.
I took private guided tour (2 day Wildlife Explorer) into the lake, with an overnight stay in the Krai Sorn raft house (floating bungalows). It really blew my mind how abundant wildlife was in Khlong Saeng
We also visited the beautifully stunning limestone rock (karst formations) in Cheow Lan Lake, especially in the Guilin Scenic Area.
If you think (as I did) that after decades of developed tourism, travel in Thailand no longer has any wonders to surprise you with, then you need to watch this video, and check out the Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary and Cheow Lan Lake. It is definitely worthy of being the best of Thailand.
Visited in April 2019.

My guide was Gai, who I can HIGHLY recommend. Exceeded all my expectation. Photo of the elephant in the thumbnail is his, as are some of the photos featured in the video.
I arranged the trip through the Khao Sok Riverside Cottages, which is another great place to stay and be surrounded by nature:

What animals have you seen in the wild?
Hiking The View Point, Cheow Lan Lake, Surat Thani, Thailand
Hiking the view point at Cheow Lan Lake, Surat Thani, Thailand/
One of the more popular excursions in Khao Sok National Park is a viewpoint. The trail to this viewpoint is fairly easy but does get a bit slippery when it's wet. On our hike, it was quite slippery and difficult since it was raining the day before. The trail up to the top was about one mile and quite steep. As we got near the top, the trail changes from mostly hard clay to sharp limestone rock. Care must be taken on this section of the trail. The reward for putting out the energy to get to the top is a beautiful view of Cheow Lan Lake.
3 Days Khao Sok National Park Trip (First Vlog)

It features dramatic limestone formations and waterfalls that cascade through juicy thickets drenched with rains and morning dew. Ratchaprapa or Chiew Larn Dam of Thailand's Surat Thani Province owns a breathtaking landscape of limestone karst hills which has gained a reputation rivaling China's Guilin and Vietnam's Halong Bay. But being much smaller in scale and more difficult to travel to has kept it off the tourist's radar. The dam offers several choices of secluded raft resorts and eco-activities making it a perfect holiday hideaway..

Khao Sok National Park in Southern Thailand is an amazing place. It is covered by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, huge limestone mountains shooting straight up in the air, deep valleys, breathtaking lakes, exciting caves, wild animals and much more.
Khao Sok National Park ( Thailand )
Khao Sok National Park was established in 1980 as Thailand’s 22nd National Park. It consists of a thick native rainforest, waterfalls, majestic limestone cliffs and an island stubbed lake.
It is located in Southern Thailand’s Surat Thani province. It is perfectly situated on the mainland close Phuket and Krabi.
Khao Sok has the highest level of rainfall in Thailand. Due to the high mountains and the fact that it is influenced by both the Northeast (Pacific Ocean) and Southwest (Indian Ocean) monsoons.
The heaviest rains are between May and November, the driest period is between December and April; although even during that time there can still be some rain – there is always a fair chance to get wet when visiting a rainforest.
The rainforest in this region is one of the oldest in the world, since Thailand has remained in a similar equatorial position throughout the last 160 million years.
Khao Sok is also famous for its limestone or ‘karst’ mountains. In most of the region, ground level is about 200m above sea level with the average mountain heights around 400m. The tallest peak in the National Park is 960m in height.
One of the most interesting areas is stunningly beautiful Cheow Larn Lake in the heart of the National Park with its floating raft houses and luxury tents.
