What is Myanmar REALLY Like? Dee Doke Waterfall & Blue Pool Lagoons in Mandalay
Myanmar has a lot of common misconceptions that can sometime deter people from visiting the country. but what is Myanmar REALLY like for tourists and travellers like me and you? We decided to stay in Mandalay for a few extra nights to really see what we could find.
The people, the places and the experiences were what we wanted to see and find out for ourselves if it's somewhere worth visiting and sharing that with you guys.
We found a few hidden gems in Dee Doke Waterfall and the Blue Lagoon about an hour or 2 outside of Mandalay. It was definitely off of the beaten path but well worth the visit.
Watch the video to see if it's somewhere you'd like to visit on your travels!

MYANMAR KALAW TO INLE LAKE
MYANMAR KALAW TO INLE LAKE
I went on a 3 day trek in Myanmar from Kalaw to the hugely popular tourist destination of Inle Lake.
I trekked with an excellent company called Sam's family where we had the brilliant tour guide Nantoey. Throughout the trip her friendliness and enthusiasm encouraged us to continue.
Sadly, I had to stop on the 2nd day thank to my cheap trainers which resulted in several huge and terrible blisters completely preventing me from walking at some points. So I left the group and made my own way by van to Inle Lake.
Inle Lake has an entrance fee which is good for 3 days I believe. During our time here, we cycled partially around the Lake and also hired a boat tour. The boat tour essentially took us to many locations in an around the huge lake. It was good fun and the scenery is exceptional.

Min Zin, Stan Sze and Nyunt Than on Burma: A New Way Forward?
Speakers:
Stan Sze, Chairman of the Board, Community Partners International
Nyunt Than, Chair and Co-Founder, Burmese American Democratic Alliance
Min Zin, Leading Journalist on Burma and Political Scientist
Moderator:
Gordon Hein, Vice President, Programs, The Asia Foundation
Burma is back in the international spotlight. After more than twenty years under house arrest, pro-democracy opposition leader and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has been released and allowed to stand for election to parliament. Her release is just the latest in a series of important events and reforms that began in 2007. The so-called Saffron revolution which involved wide-spread protests by Buddhist monks, along with international pressure, have prompted the ruling military junta to loosen its grip on power by initiating government reforms and holding elections. A nation at the crossroads between India and China, Burma is composed of a mix of fractious ethnicities and has been ruled by military regimes for nearly fifty years. Many hope that Burma is finally on the cusp of true democratic change after the reforms, despite being plagued by poverty, sectarian violence and accusations of human rights abuses.
Three experienced panelists will discuss a range of issues regarding Burma. What do the current reforms mean and what impact will they have across the region? What do long-time activists foresee for the future of Burma? How will the work of NGOs be affected after changes in policy and will there be an increased focus on human rights and education? Join us for this thought provoking conversation regarding the current state of affairs in Burma.
Our partner organizations for this event are Community Partners International, East Meets West, Burmese American Democratic Alliance (BADA) and Asia Society of Northern California.

In this episode, Tway Ma Shaung was sharing about his love, marriage and family. And fights with Phoe Kay, Thuya Ye Aung. We hope you like it.
Lethwei (Letwhay) also known as Burmese Boxing and Myanmar Traditional Boxing may well be the most brutal and exciting form of kickboxing the world has ever seen. Lethwei is in many ways similar to it’s younger sibling Muay Thai from neighboring Thailand.

Finding your place in the world through the pursuit of your passion | Mogok Pauk Pauk | TEDxInyaLake
Growing up feeling like a girl in a boy’s body is a difficult and painful experience for anyone to go through, more so in a conservative, patriarchal country like Myanmar. Despite the stigma, societal pressures, and challenges posed by the military rulers, Mogok Pauk Pauk found her feet in fashion design, incorporating traditional ‘cheik’ fabric into contemporary designs that wouldn’t look out of place on a New York or Milan catwalk. Heartfelt and inspiring.
Mogok Pauk Pauk is a prominent fashion designer in Myanmar known for her revitalisation of the traditional textile patterns and bringing haute couture to the Myanmar fashion world. She is also one of the most well-known transgender figures in Myanmar. Pauk Pauk was born in Mogok, a town famous for its rubies and from a young age developed an interest in makeup and fashion. She started her career as a makeup artist in Myanmar’s movie industry before making the transition to fashion and design and in the process moving to Mandalay and then later to Yangon. In 2006, she took an opportunity to study at Milan’s Burgo Fashion and Design Institute (Istituto di Moda Burgo), an experience that opened her eyes to global fashion. Mogok Pauk Pauk is passionate about preservation Myanmar textile traditions while modernising to ensure their continuity.

A monk, a man and the code to living life | Pyay Way | TEDxYangon
Pyay Way was a monk for over 20 years. He now runs an art gallery that has become a central social scene for artists, art lovers and the wider community alike. In this heartwarming and funny talk, Pyay Way shares his transition to being a layperson and how he applies the principles that he gained in monkhood - Kutho (merit), Panna (knowledge) and Ucca (riches) - to live a fulfilling life with meaning and merit.
Pyay Way is the founder and curator of Nawaday Tharlar Art Gallery in Yangon. Nawaday Tharlar means “A Place for a New Day” in a hybrid of Pali and English. Since its founding in 2012 Nawaday Tharlar has become a vibrant community of painters, sculptors, writers and poets from all around Myanmar and beyond. It is a venue for anyone to come and share stories, art, and perspectives at open mic nights; a home for artists to share and learn with others at workshops and free classes; and a place for community organizers to meet and develop philanthropic programs such as flood relief, trash collection, and health projects for those in need. Pyay Way was previously an ordained Buddhist monk for 20 years. During that time, he studied Buddhist philosophy at Sitagu International Buddhist Academy and Masoeyein monastery, and later linguistics at the University of Hyderabad. Since leaving the monkhood Pyay Way has continued to be captivated by philosophy, poetry, and art of all kinds.

A Message From Suu Kyi to HK University
15 March 2012.
[Transcripts]
Hong Kong University is very special for me. The very first video conference by Skype I ever experienced was with you[i]. So, it is not just an honour, but a pleasure to accept the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from your University.
Laws mean a great deal to us at the moment. I think perhaps many of you know that very soon, my party, the National League for Democracy, will be taking part in the by-elections, that take place on the 1st of April. One of the reasons why we are taking part in these elections is because we wish to be involved in the legislative process of our country. There are many laws in Burma that are redundant, or that exist only to repress the people. These need to be changed, removed.
Then, there is also a need for laws that would help to promote the freedom and the security of our people. So, laws concern us in many ways, not just the making of laws, but the administration of laws. Rule of law is one of the foremost issues on our party election platform. Rule of law has been absent from Burma for so long that many people do not realize it has more to do with the judiciary than with the legislature. Our judiciary has not had the independence that every judiciary needs, if it is to perform its duties correctly.
So, we are, at the moment, thinking of laws in many ways, laws as part of the legislative process, laws as part of the judicial process. Only with a strong, independent, honest judiciary, and a strong, independent legislature that truly reflects the will of the people, will we be able to look on laws as a protective body for our people. That is why I am so honoured to be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Laws.
I am sorry I cannot be with you in person today, because I would so wish to visit your University and to thank you personally for all that you have done, for me, and for our cause over the years. Your support has meant a lot to us. I hope though that in the near future, it will be possible for me to travel out of Burma, and that then I will be able to come to you, and be part of your campus life, for perhaps just a very short period. But even a short period, even a matter of days, or even a matter of hours, would mean a great deal to me, as you have done so much to help the cause of democracy in Burma, simply by your interest and your enthusiastic support.
Thank you very much, and let me repeat, I look forward to the time when I can be with you in person. Thank you.

Listening with a Borderless Ear | Kit Young | TEDxYangon
Kit fell in love with Myanmar music a long time ago. In this engaging talk, Kit and her Gitameit singers lead the TEDxYangon audience in a singalong session to appreciate music from different parts of the world, showing that the love for music is human and without borders. American pianist-composer Kit Young (aka Sandaya Khin Khin Lei) heard magic in traditional Myanmar music on her first listen as a visitor to the Rangoon of 1972. When residing in Thailand in the 1990’s, she visited Yangon often to study sandaya with U Yi Nwe and Gita Lulin U Ko Ko. In 2003, Gitameit Music Institute was born in Yangon. The school offered new ways of absorbing Myanmar and Western musical cultures which have developed creative opportunities for young musicians in Myanmar. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
