China: the world's biggest camera surveillance network - BBC News
China has been building what it calls the world's biggest camera surveillance network. Across the country, 170 million CCTV cameras are already in place and an estimated 400 million new ones will be installed in the next three years.
Many of the cameras are fitted with artificial intelligence, including facial recognition technology. The BBC's John Sudworth has been given rare access to one of the new hi-tech police control rooms.

The 21,000km Great Wall has a long history. It began in 770 BC It was continually built through different states and dynasties over 2000 years. Materials are stone, soil, sand, brick delivered by hand, rope, kart and goat. Its purpose was to prevent invasion and protect the silk road trade.
When Chairman Mao came into power, it was encouraged for people to take parts of the wall and use it as free building material. Thankfully, the tourist industry managed to save most of it.
27,000km long and over 6m in height. Usually the wall is on hills as well. To stop the horses. Every 500m or less on the Great Wall are flaking towers allow defenders to shoot arrows at attackers at the face of the wall. And they'd shoot out of these small windows. The Mongolians. They used to put smoke signals Like one smoke for 100 men coming or 2 smokes for like 500 men coming. And at nighttime they used to set fire 1 fire for 100 men or 2 fires for 500 men are coming. So there was about 3 million people in China at that time. And about 1.3 million people worked on the wall. Nowadays theres about 5 billion people in China. Workers were soldiers, peasants, rebels and political prisoners.

So this is how you get down from the Great Wall of China. So you have a brake and you can go faster. It picks up some speed. But you have to be careful you don't hit the person in front. Isn't it a pleasant ride? Very pleasant. I'm calling it The Great Queue of China Because it takes hours to get up there and back. Left at 9 o'clock in the morning by the time I got there it was 3 o' clock. End up an hour queuing and then... You only get an hour on the actual wall and thats it- you have to go back down again. So spent most of the day waiting. Was actually probably my worst day in China because all of the waiting in traffic and at the wall.
