Hit and Run on Collins Road
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/Fox 28) -- Police responded to a hit-and-run Saturday afternoon in the 300-block of Collins Rd, near Lindale Mall.
According to police, three vehicles were involved. The suspect left the scene westbound on Collins Rd in a silver Dodge Stratus with out-of-state license plates.
Only minor, non-life threatening injuries were reported. Police were unable to provide any additional information.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Nearly 1,500 walkers laced up their sneaker at the Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids on Saturday for the Arc of Eastern Central Iowa's 17th annual Arc March.
The Fountains Retail Center - Cedar Rapids, IA
Welcome to The Fountains, a 19 acre mixed use work/play development comprised of 40,000 square feet of retail space and 200,000 square feet of office space located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Fountains is located at the crossroads of Edgewood Road and Hwy 100 in NE Cedar Rapids, adjacent to a 82,000 square foot HyVee Grocery Store with close proximity to TransAmerica corporate campus, Twin Pines Golf Course, River Ridge Office/Medical Park & more. Columbia Place (2019 Revisit) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Columbia Place mall in Dentsville, SC from August 15, 2019. This is a struggling mall just outside the state capital of Columbia. This is a revisit, we did a video on this place last year. Over the span of said year, it would appear as if the mall is trying to come back to some bit of life. Moonbeam Capital Investments, the owner of the property, appears to have drawn in a number of local and low end tenants and foot traffic is way up. We were quite surprised during our walk, expecting a very dead property and getting a half full busy place instead. The architecture of the building is outstanding. It was pretty interesting walking around this mall.

Columbia Mall opened up in 1977 with a booming start. The anchors included Rich's in the western spot, Belk to the east, JCP to the north, and Sears to the south. This roster was part of the reason of the mall's early success. Belk had a strong following in the Carolinas, Sears was an easy pick, and thrived until the late 2000's, Rich's was loved and easy money, and Penney's was a solid fill-in with steady success. This all gave Columbia Place a favorable place to shop with stores either loved or found in larger cities like Atlanta or Charlotte. And was the mall favorable. Columbia Place made money hand-over-fist for years before problems arose.
The classic security issues began to arise in the late 80's. Crime began to pop-up around and inside the mall. In response, mall owners added policies and heightened security. This response worked and came just in time. In 1986, ground was broken on the Columbiana Centre, a new enclosed mall close to the wealth. However, Columbia Place's perception weakened because of the events, and with a new mall on the rise, things weren't turning out so bright.
The first warnings of what was to come came in the mid 90's. Belk left the mall, presumably thanks to their location at Columbiana Centre. Yet no fear, with Dillard's replacing the store in 1998, in another weird move. Dillard's had a new store at Columbiana and another one at Richland, meaning that CPM was a third store for, again, an oversaturated city. These changes should have put CBL, who became the owners about that time, on notice. Competition was leaving its mark on the mall.
The Village at Sandhill, a lifestyle center just down the road, was built in 2005. Along with Belk at Sandhill was a JCPenney, causing yet another bump in the Place's path. This duo of locations is probably a factor in JCPenney's shuttering at CPM in 2005. This was also met with the changing of Rich's to Macy's. The closure of Penney's was very devastating to the mall, as would be any closing. On the corridor that JCP anchored was a two-level Old Navy that was hurt by the closing. Old Navy left shortly after.
CBL had a response to this departure. Burlington Coat Factory was given the first floor and Steve and Barry's Sportswear took up the second. Steve and Barry's didn't last long, out of its spot by 2008. Burlington left in 2018. These vacancies wouldn't be replaced. Dillard's left its CPM space in 2009, a hole still left closed today. This began a sharp decline of the mall, as many national tenants left the mall. Capping off these struggles was the closure of Sears in early 2017.
One thing set in stone with the mall is that its fate is in Moonbeam's hands. What they retain is its survival. If Macy's leaves, then the mall is left for dead. If Macy's can be kept, the possibilities aren't endless, but there are some. The good news is, compared to a decade ago, there is only one other player with Macy's. Columbiana Centre has an anchor pad that could attract the store. If Macy's heads elsewhere, there isn't a future or happy ending I can put here. Columbia Place would be likely to shutter as a retail option. It's also worth mentioning that Columbia would be one of the largest cities I can think of with only one viable major shopping center. Sandhill hasn't even been doing so well recently, as cited from a The State article. There is need for a supporting cast member here, but no one has stepped up. Columbia Place may seem to have been supplanted by Columbiana, but it remains a dark horse. Maybe if this niche is taken, Columbia Place isn't looking at a wrecking ball five years down the road.
Historic Cedar Rapids Iowa
These pictures are in a souvenir booklet that I estimate is from the turn of the century to around the 1920s. I rescued this out of a box of old post cards and photos that someone found in a house in Huxley Iowa back in the 80s.
Some of the photos I rescued had names on them and I was able to find decedents of some of the people in them and return them to the family. I may tell that story some day.
Others that no one could identify I still have and among those thins was this booklet of pictures from Cedar Rapids.
It has the name George Anderson of Huxley written on the back, no dates. It says One Cent Postage without message on the back.
You can still find booklets of photos like this around tourist areas today.
I used iMovie on the Macintosh to explore the photos in detail and put them into a video.
I have several old photos from different time periods as well. Perhaps I will put those into a video one day they are all fairly interesting.
UPDATE: Suspect Named In CR Bank Robbery
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Police Friday responded to a bank robbery in downtown Cedar Rapids. It happened just after 11:00 a.m. at the Hills Bank branch at 240 3rd Avenue SE.
Police tell CBS 2 News that witnesses provided them with a suspect description and told them which way he ran. A short time later, officers chased down 24-year-old Jacob Allen Mack and took him into custody.
Mack is now being held in the Linn County Jail, facing charges of second-degree robbery and interference with official acts.
Police say no weapon was displayed during the robbery.
This is the third bank robbery in the city this week. The first two occurred at U.S. Bank branches located on Edgewood Road and 16th Avenue SW.
If anyone has information on any of the three robberies, they're asked to call the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5487.
