How Dollar Stores Really Make Their Money
Every year, dollar stores see higher and higher earnings, but how can a store that seems like it's giving things away turn itself into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise? The answer is simple: that dollar isn't always the great deal it appears to be. Here are their secrets.
Whether times are good or bad, you can still count on people to flock to dollar stores because they have the one thing everyone loves: convenience. Sales for Dollar General are always on the upswing, with the chain seeing an increase of 3.7 percent between 2017 and 2018, regardless of the state of the economy. Take it from Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos, who had this to say about their regular customers:
We have seen no sign of trade out or trade up from our core customers. Even in a good economy, [they are] still looking for value and convenience.
So, basically, no matter how much money people have, they still want something that bigger grocery stores can't give them. Dollar stores are not just convenient because their items are cheaper, but also because there seems to be one on every corner — and that makes them perfect for a quick fill-in trip between your weekly grocery runs. These stores are also typically smaller than the ones in a big chain like Walmart, which means that you can usually get in and out with your emergency bag of dog food, a handful of snacks, or supplies for your kid's art project in just a couple of minutes. The fact that most people are on to this, means dollar stores are always making money — even if customers buy just a few things.

060317 FMY 2000 & 2017 reunions for Linden (MI) Free Methodist Youth Group from the 70's
Linden (MI) Free Methodist Church Youth Group (from the 70's) Reunions. 2000 & 2017. Next reunion tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 1st, 2019. May be held at the new Linden Free Methodist Church built approximately 20 years ago.
In the 1970s I was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Linden (MI) and performed Gospel with the Youth group (FMY), and throughout the state with the Eastern Michigan Conference performing in the Pathway group and recording a Gospel Album available at our Sunday night performances around the state.
The Linden FMY held a reunion in 2000, and just held one this past weekend. The event in 2000 was a great turnout and I photographed both for our group.
I just finished putting together a montage of both events and posted it. This is probably only of interest to members and their families.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Pewaukee (#509)
[Latest Airdate: November 15, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 3, 2016]
Well, let's see. There's a village, a city, a lake and a high school all named Pewaukee. What's next, Pewaukee County? Well, John did find Pewaukee the State --- of mind, that is - and it's friendly, fun and relaxing.
Friendly perfectly describes Connie Watt (yep, JJ's mom), the folks at American Transmission Company and the owner and grandson of Century fence. Actually, we could put everyone we met in this category...
But Fun is the only way to describe Silly Willyz!
Relaxing? Well, it was relaxing when John went fishing off the pier at Smokey's Bait shop and puttered around the lake on Loerhke's incredible pontoon boat. But it was not so relaxing when he got the MPTV van towed by Ken Weber, or when he appeared in front of Judge Melissa Murray. It was relaxing when he smelled the alligator (with no alligator in it) meatloaf at the Beer Depot and when he sat back and enjoyed Louie's famous fillet at The Butler Inn of Pewaukee. It was not so relaxing when the firefighter driving the hover boat moved over to let John drive...

Lake Trek Seg 1.mov
This video is of Segment 1 of the Lake Trek, Chicago to New Buffalo, Michigan. I walked this segment alone from March 16-20. It is the most heavily industrialized part of the lake, so there were long stretches where I was forced inland to get around steel mills, container ports, and other industry. I've included shots along the lakeshore here. Walk with me...
Baraga vs Beal City 1995 State Semifinal
Huge underdogs again, this time to the defending state champions, Beal City, the Viking defense shut down all-state tailback Wes Wilson and Rex Beach kicked a 26-yard field goal as time expired to send Baraga to the state finals at the Pontiac Silverdome.
Mio restaurant rallies for clean rivers in Michigan
MIO, Mich. --- Floating the river in the summer months of Michigan is one of the most relaxing activities, but it is also important to follow the rules and keep Michigan rivers clean. Back in February, the United States Forest Service created a ban of alcohol on the AuSable river from the Mio Dam Pond to Canoe Landing in Alcona County. That same month the ban was rescineded.
In July, the Forest Service developed a community driven action plan that would address current issues like public safety and widespread littering. The plan focuses on educating people about the values and benefits of their wild scenic rivers and empowering them to be good visitors.
A local establishment in Mio, Paddle Inn Restaurant, is going above and beyond in promoting residents and visitors to pick up their trash.
If the ban took place I think it would definitely affect, said restaurant owner Wendi Mills. I have made our business shirts with a logo on the back that says 'We love our river, please pick up you litter' just as a friendly reminder to keep our environment clean. As well as be able to have fun with your friends and family. We would hate to see that go away.
The Forest Service will meet again this fall to see if adjustments need to be made.

UC officially begins preseason
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. CINICINNATI (WKRC) -- The University of Cincinnati mens basketball team officially began preseason practice for the 2015-16 campaign Wednesday in the practice gymnasium at the Richard E. Lindner Athletics Center. // SEASON PREVIEW Following a season that saw a young and inexperienced team come together to win 23 games and reach the third round of the NCAA tournament despite losing its coach to a medical condition nine games into the year Cincinnati returns its top six scorers, more than 80 percent of its productivity and its head coach for a highly anticipated 2015-16 campaign. The latest edition of Bearcats are headlined by a trio of players who earned recognition from American Athletic Conference coaches toward the end of last season. Senior forward Octavius Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Trinity Valley College [Texas]) received second team all-league honors after proving himself as one of the conferences top defenders and UCs best scorer. The Memphis, Tennessee, native ranked as the only player in The American listed in the top four in blocks (third at 2.0), field-goal percentage (third at .557) and rebounds (fourth at 7.2). Sophomore Gary Clark (Clayton, N.C./Clayton High School) impressed the league with his rebounding skills and steady offensive game to earn selection to The Americans All-Rookie Team. UCs best freshman rebounder since Danny Fortson, Clark pulled in a team-high 246 boards and finished second among league freshmen, averaging 7.2 rebounds. He ended the year fourth on the team with 7.8 points per contest. Junior guard Troy Caupain (Midlothian, Va./Cosby High School) garnered honorable mention all-league acclaim after developing into the teams top facilitator and one of its most consistent scorers. UCs leader in assists (3.6 per game), Caupain finished second on the team in points (9.6) scoring in double figures 17 times. Senior center Coreontae DeBerry (Holland, Mich./Hutchinson CC), sophomore forward Quadri Moore (Linden, N.J./Linden High School) and freshman forward Tre Scott (Darien, Ga./McIntosh County Academy) joins Ellis and Clark in the interior. DeBerrys inside game blossomed late in the year, contributing a career-best 13 points in 26 minutes against Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Moore showed his shooting range in flashes last season. Scott displayed his energy and athleticism in preseason workouts with the Bearcats after averaging 21.6 points, 14.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks as a senior last year at McIntosh County Academy in Darien, Georgia. Other post players include junior walk-on forward Zack Tobler and junior forward Kyle Washington, who averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds at NC State a year ago. Washington will sit out UCs 2015-16 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules. Senior Farad Cobb (West Palm Beach, Fla./Northwest Fla. St. College), junior Kevin Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and freshman Justin Jenifer (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mills Academy) join Caupain in the backcourt. Cobb was a catalyst during UCs run to the postseason a year ago, averaging a team-best 12.2 points while shooting 44.7 percent from field in March. Johnson showed himself as a threat from the outside, dropping in 43 three-pointers second-most on the team behind Cobb (53). A speedy, gifted ball handler with great creativity as a passer, Jenifer averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 assists as a senior at Milford Mills Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, last year. Senior forward Shaq Thomas (Paterson, N.J./NIA Prep) and freshman swingman Jacob Evans III (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael the Archangel) will roam the wing for the Bearcats this season. The athletically gifted Thomas poured in a career-high 18 points to rally the Bearcats past Houston and set the stage for their five-game win streak to end the regular season. A talented shooter and determined scorer, Evans averaged 24.9 points and 9.0 rebounds as a senior last year at St. Michael the Archangel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. // BEARCATS RETURNING TOP SIX SCORERS Cincinnati returns a large portion of its productivity from the 2015-16 campaign.
