Thinning out dead, dying and deformed timber
Restocking with other trees and shrubs to improve structural diversity
Improving the canopy
Disposing of and stockpiling of old timber on the course to encourage wildlife
Returning back to a more natural environment on golf courses

Linlithgow Golf Course and their involvement with the Scottish Golfcourse Wildlife Initiative and management of the golf course and issue such as landscape, an integrated management plan and other aspects of the site - providing a great example of good practice.

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Blair Cross, golf professional, St Andrews:
St Andrews is the heart of golf and it is golf, the history of golf but also the innovation of golf. You know, the first green keepers were here, the first club designers were here, so with innovation as well within St Andrews. So the fact the Olympics is back, that's great news, it's going to expose golf to even more people around the world so as the heart of golf, with the links and R&A (Royal and Ancients) in town I definitely think the effect will be felt all the way back here.

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Blair Cross, golf professional, St Andrews:
I hope that people will see golf, who maybe normally would not see golf, because I appreciate it's not on everybody's radar. So, hopefully within the Olympics - it's obviously the globally the biggest sporting event in the world. Hopefully people will see golf maybe for the first time or one of the first times and they'll be encouraged to ask some questions about it. Maybe even go to a practice area or a golf course, maybe have a lesson, but yeah definitely get people talking about it would be the main buzz and I hope the Olympics would be popular, be helpful for golf.
16. Wide of Cross walking to ball on green
17. Pull focus of ball going in hole
18. Various set-up shots of Laurie Watson walking
19. SOUNDBITE (English) Laurie Watson, media manager, St Andrews:
St Andrews is the home of golf because it's got probably the earliest documented evidence of golf being played anywhere. Archbishop Hamilton's charter goes back to the 16th Century and in that charter the people of St Andrews are given a right to use these links as a place for recreation and leisure, including golf. So you know that's the first time that golf is actually really mentioned in historical purposes.
20. Wide of the Royal and Ancient's club house
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Laurie Watson, media manager, St Andrews:
So when wee get visitors on an annual basis from around the world. I mean, across the seven courses we have approximately 230,000 rounds of golf played each year. On the old course alone, which bear in mind, is only open 6 days a week, we have 47,000 rounds of golf. And, in terms of visiting numbers, probably about 40% of that 230,000 is just people travelling to St Andrews to play golf here. So it's sizeable number if people who all want to come here. It's a bucket-list thing to come to St Andrews and tick that box and say you've played the world's most famous links.

Old Photographs Blackridge Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Blackridge a small town in the western part of West Lothian. The town name dates to 1581, first recorded as Blakrig. Later, Blackrig and then Blackrigg became the standard spelling until Blackridge became the norm in official documents after about 1840. Blackrig remains the local pronunciation. The village grew from a population of under 200 to over 2,000 by World War I with coal mining and whinstone quarrying the main employments. The last colliery closed in the late 1950s and Blackridge became a dormitory for nearby towns. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
