The Marvels of Linville Caverns North Carolina
Linville Caverns are privately owned active limestone caverns located in northern McDowell County, North Carolina, just south of the village of Linville Falls, on U.S. Highway 221. The caverns are open to the public year-round for guided tours
Located at the southern gateway to western NC's High Country region, Linville Caverns is an ideal destination for visitors of all ages. The beauty of our mountains is echoed within Humpback Mountain and visitors are invited to explore the splendor and wonders nature created inside a mountain.
For centuries, the marvels of Linville Caverns were unknown to man. In the early 1800's a fishing expedition headed by Henry E. Colton, of eastern NC, were astounded to see fish swimming in and out of what appeared to be rather solid rock. A small opening in the mountainous terrain allowed them to enter the subterranean recess that is still home to native trout in an underground stream. Colton, who later served as the state geologist of Tennessee, wrote of his exploration in an 1858 issue of NC Presbyterian, ...now began the wondrous splendors of the hidden world...we emerged into an immense passage, whose roof was far beyond the reach of the glare of our torches, except where the fantastic festoons of stalactites hang down within our touch. It looked like the arch of some grand old cathedral, yet it was too sublime, too perfect in all its beautiful proportions, to be anything of human, but a model which man might attempt to imitate. It was not a large, gross cavern,...pendants were of a delicate lightness, and a most beautiful hue...
Linville Caverns was opened for public touring in 1937. Since that time many upgrades to the pathways and lighting system have enhanced the safe touring experience that now exists. Courteous and experienced guides take you into the subterranean world, giving you the history of the caverns and allowing you to view the grand work of nature. We invite you to visit often and experience the beauty of these age-old mountains from the inside!

Driving in North Carolina on US 221 from Marion to Linville Falls in the Mountains
Before entering Marion city limits, I-40 intersects with US 221. US 221 then joins with NC 226, going west around the city on the Marion Bypass. After the expressway passes the shopping centers along US 70, it continues as a four-lane highway with a turning median all the way to North Cove. Along the way, several business can be seen including shrubbery farms, stone/rock cutters, and a chemical plant. NC 226 splits early at Woodlawn, for travelers that want to go to Spruce Pine.
The climb to Linville Falls is somewhat curvy. It is a route heavily traveled by trucks, and a runaway truck ramp is located along this section. Also located in this section is Linville Caverns, a small tourist destination. At Linville Falls, nearby sites include Linville Gorge Wilderness, Linville Falls, (via NC 183) and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Linville Caverns, Falls, and Gorge (Plus bonus Mt. Mitchell)
Linville caverns, Linville Falls, Linville Gorge, and Mt. Mitchell all in one day. The Linville wilderness, one of the few old growth forests left in this country, has a nearly 3,000 acre wildfire tearing through it this week. The shots between 1:04 and 1:36 are showing a ton of smoke and ash mixed with heavy fog.
(The happy green mossy parts are all Mt. Mitchell)

Oak Hill Academy Earth Science students visit Linville Caverns 4.13.15
Mr. Finklea's Earth Science classes at Oak Hill Academy have been studying limestone caves, their dripstone formations (stalactites, stalagmites and columns), and the natural water filtration that forms them. To get some up-close exposure to this phenomenon, Mr. Finklea, with help from Mr. Rodgers and Ms. Smith, took his classes to nearby Linville Caverns. The caverns, which have formed inside Humpback Mountain in Marion, North Carolina, were discovered in the early 1800s, and were opened to the public in 1937. The group also hiked the Linville Falls trails, which allowed for expansive views of the falls and Linville Gorge, carved by the Linville River for 12 miles. The Linville Gorge Wilderness area is 11K+ acres of what has been called one of the most scenic river gorges in the eastern United States. Managed by the National Forest Service, it is a popular area for hiking, camping, rock climbing, hunting and fishing.
Thank you, Amber D., for the the photos!
